Last night in Las Vegas, Chad Dawson proved to the world that he isn’t the future of the light heavyweight division. He is the now.
Dawson dominated every aspect of his fight with Antonio Tarver and was crowned WBC, IBF, and IBO light heavyweight champion. The contest was never close and it was one of the most one sided fights I have seen in awhile.
Antonio Tarver looked 59, not the 39 years old that he actually is. His gas tank was on empty in the 6th round and Dawson gave him no reason for hope. I had Dawson winning ten of the twelve rounds and the two rounds Tarver won, Dawson was resting and getting Antonio to wear down even more.
Chad Dawson looked fantastic. His movement was solid and his defense looked much improved. There were many combinations that landed and did damage to Tarver and there was just no answer from him.
Tarver is known for running his mouth and Dawson did exactly what he told everyone he would do, shut Tarver up and talk with his hands. After the mismatch was over, Tarver actually thought he looked good and won the fight. Dawson outclassed him and was still his respectful self after the bout.
Chad Dawson proved why he is one of the best fighters in the world today. He is very good in every part of the sweet science and continues to improve every time out. In his last fight against Glen Johnson we saw a few small holes in his defense. It was obvious he worked on those and it showed as he blocked a lot of punches from Tarver. That is the mark of a real champion.
In the co-feature, we saw the true colors of Samuel Peter. He is a fat quitter. Vitali Klitschko came out of retirement and beat Peter into submission.
In what was a very boring lopsided fight, Klitschko looked pretty good and Peter looked very bad. I saw a guy in Peter, who just showed up to collect a pay check. He was slow and lethargic and hardly threw any punches. After the 8th round, Peter quit on his stool. His eyes were swollen but he was never in any real danger. He just has no heart.
We saw two dominating performances last night. In one of the fights we saw a clinic of how to be the best and in the other we saw a terrible showing by a guy that thought he deserved more than he really does.
