Preview: UFC 69
Preview: UFC 69
Just two nights after Ultimate Fight Night, the UFC is live from Texas on pay per view for UFC 69. It's a fantastic card with a couple bouts worthy of main event status, including one fight in particular on the undercard that drew the attention of my cousin Scott. The Spoon Man checks in with his preview of UFC 69.
UFC 69 will be live tonight in a state which has never held a show before. The Toyota Center in Texas will be the host of an excellent set of fights.
In my eyes the main event really isn't the main event tonight. It will however feature probably the most well rounded fighter in the sport today Georges. St Pierre.
St Pierre will be taking on Ultimate Fighter season 4 winner Matt Serra. It is a great accomplishment to win the show but a not so pleasant surprise finding out who you'll have to face.
The Welterweight champion St. Pierre is coming off of a dominating victory over Matt Hughes. He simply outclassed the long time king of the division at UFC 65 to take his crown. From what I've seen, I don't know that Georges will be giving the belt away anytime soon. He is great on his feet with quick hands and great leg kicks. His wrestling is his most improved skill but nothing compares to his submissions. I honestly think he has the best overall skills in all of mixed martial arts.
Matt Serra (5-4 in the UFC) could be in for a rough night. Serra is known for his submission and his ground game. I don't think he'll be able to get any takedowns tonight and will get knocked out in either the 1st or 2nd round.
The real main event tonight puts bitter rivals in the octagon against each other for a second time. Diego Sanchez and his undefeated record will take on Josh Koscheck in what has the makings of a classic.
The two guys simply don't like each other. They fought on Season 1 of the Ultimate Fighter show and Sanchez got the win. Koscheck has been talking junk about how Diego barely beat him when we was "just a wrestler" then. Sanchez is pissed becuase he feels disrespected by those comments. They will settle their differences in the octagon tonight.
Josh Koscheck is the most improved fighter since the show hands down. He is an excellent wrestler and has added submission and a pretty solid standup to his game in the last few years. I'm not sure however if his overall game is as good as Diego's.
Diego Sanchez is a freak. He gets in the octagon and has bad intentions of what he wants to do. It makes it even worse if he dislikes his opponent. His ground and pound is top of the food chain and I'm sure anyone's is better than his right now. If he can somehow take down Koscheck, it might be bad bloody night in the cage. I look for the fight to go back and fourth and possibly go to the scorecards. I am pumped for this one.
Also fighting tonight is one of the UFC's most popular fighters and Texas native, Mike "Quick" Swick. He will be taking on his toughest test to date in Yushin Okami.
Swick likes to stand and bang which makes him very fun to watch. A win tonight will put him in line for a title shot in the Light Heavyweight division. I look for him to continue his winning ways with a KO.
Full fight card:
Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Serra
Roger Huerta vs. Leonard Garcia
Diego Sanchez vs. Josh Koscheck
Mike Swickvs. Yushin Okami
Alan Belchervs. Kendall Grove
Thales Leitesvs. Pete Sell
Brad Imes vs. Heath Herring
Marcus Davis vs. Pete Spratt
Josh Haynes vs. Luke Cummo
Overall, a very very solid lineup tonight in Texas. I look for big showings tonight for some big names coming to us live in the big state.
Tune in, and you won't be let down.
