Quarterback Colt McCoy still wants a shot in Cleveland, according to KXAN.com.
The TV station caught up with McCoy on Friday at the youth football camp he hosts at Westlake High School in Texas. The third-year quarterback said he wants a fair chance to compete with first-round draft pick Brandon Weeden when training camp opens at the end of this month.
“We’ll see, I don’t know,” McCoy told the station. “There are a lot of things I can control and I’m controlling those things. The things beyond that I try to do my best to not worry about those and go out there and do what I do on the field, that’s the most important thing. Beyond that, I can’t do anything else.”
Despite many believing that McCoy will be a backup this year with the Browns (at best) or released or traded before the season starts, he is keeping a positive attitude about the team.
“We’ve had some turnover in our coaches, we’re on our third offensive coordinator but I felt like it went really well this spring,” McCoy said. “I learned a lot, improved a lot and I think our team also got a lot better. We’re a young a football team and we’re going to be a lot better than we were last year but we’ll see what happens with my situation.”
That positive attitude is one of McCoy’s strengths. He hasn’t had the on-field success with the Browns that he had in college, but he’s never let that get him down (at least outwardly) and has always tried to be a team player (it’s really his family that has caused all the noise around him).
Even with Weeden clearly being the starter – the only thing missing is the official announcement – if McCoy comes into camp prepared and ready to push Weeden hard for the spot, it can only make the players and the team that much better.
