Around the Farm: May 30
David Huff, SP-COL: 8 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 6 K, BB. Really solid start for Huff, who's put together a nice little stretch since coming off the DL on April 25. In 6 appearances for the Clippers, Huff has gone 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA, striking out 26 and walking just 4 in 34 1/3 IP. If you throw in his 4 scoreless innings in Akron, his overall ERA is just 2.58. His WHIP is hovering right around an even 1.00, and he's not walking anyone. Huff is 27 years old, and still has a chance to contribute as a back-end starter at the major league level.
Cody Allen, RP-COL: IP, K, BB. Allen has now worked a combined 26 1/3 innings between Carolina, Akron and Columbus, and has a 2.39 ERA with 33 K and 5 BB.
Matt LaPorta, LF-COL: 2-4, HR (14), RBI, R, 2 K. LaPorta collected two of the Clippers 3 hits yesterday, to go along with a triple from Jason Donald. It was just his 2nd HR on the road this season, where his OPS is more than 500 points lower than at the friendly confines of Huntington Park (1.283-.721).
Gio Soto, SP-AKR: 5 2/3 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 7 H, 5 K, BB. Soto was cruising along until the 5th, when he gave up a 3-run HR and a pair of runs after that before getting yanked in favor of Brian Price. The 22-year old southpaw is now 4-2 with a 4.31 ERA, 51 K and 16 BB in 54 1/3 IP for the Aeros.
Brian Price, RP-AKR: W (2-1), 2 1/3 IP, H, K, BB. Price earned the victory last night with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief to go to 2-1 on the season. He lowered his ERA to 2.60, and still has more K (28) than innings piched (27 2/3).
Kyle Landis, RP-AKR: IP, H, 3 K. Landis worked a scoreless inning on his birthday yesterday, retiring three hitters via the strikeout to give him 26 in 26 1/3 innings pitched for Akron this year.
Adam Abraham, 1B-AKR: 3-5, 2B, 3 RBI, R, K. Abraham has slowed down a little of late, hitting just .220/.238/.366 in his last 10 games, and that includes last night's 3-5. He's still putting up career-best numbers in Akron, but it's unclear as to whether the 25-year old corner IF can keep it up for the whole year.
Chun Chen, DH-AKR: 1-3, RBI, 2 BB, 2 R, K. Back to DH, but still hitting. Still not hitting for power. Chen is having a strange season for Akron, as he's sporting a .836 OPS but only a .437 SLG.
Roberto Perez, C-AKR: 1-4, 2B, RBI, R, K. Perez's batting line is down to .208/.336/.307, but he did catch another runner stealing last night.
Francisco Jiminez, SP-CAR: W (5-2), 6 IP, ER, 7 H, 4 K, BB. Jiminez improved his record to 5-2 on the season with a 3.65 ERA. He's not missing a ton of bats, as he has just 27 K (and 27 BB) in 49 1/3 IP.
Jordan Cooper, RP-CAR: S (1), IP, H, K. Cooper is 1-1 with a save this season, and since being promoted to high-A Carolina has struck out 17 and walked 5 in 21 1/3 innings pitched. He's made 11 appearances out of the bullpen, and has a 1.67 GO/AO ratio.
Gio Urshela, 3B-CAR: 2-4, 2 RBI, R. Urshela came off the DL on May 21, and has gone 7-33 with 3 RBI, 3 BB and 5 K in 9 games over that timeframe. He's an outstanding defender at 3B, and much like Kyle Bellows in AA Akron needs to work on his hitting.
Jesus Aguilar, 1B-CAR: 2-4, 2B, RBI, R. Aguilar has put up a .343/.477/.543 line in his last 10 games, and strangely enough has done it without a single HR. He does have 5 bombs on the season, and has driven in 25.
Grant Sides, RP-LCC: 3 IP, H, 4 K. Three outstanding innings of relief for Sides, who's now appeared in 14 games out of the bullpen for the Captains. He's thrown 25 1/3 innings, struck out 27, walked 8 and has just a 1.07 ERA.
Luigi Rodriguez, CF-LCC: 1-4, 2B, 3 K. Last night's double was Rodriguez's only XBH in his last 10 games. He slugged an outstanding .542 in April on the strength of 2 HR, 3 3B and 4 2B, but in the month of May his SLG is just .252 and has just 3 doubles to his name.
