In addition to the big day at the dish, Lowery also gunned down the only Dash runner who attempted to steal on him. Lowery profiles as a true middle of the order run producer, and you don’t find too many of those that also catch. He had a blistering 1st half for short season Mahoning Valley last year, then tailed off towards the end of the year. Considering he caught a full college season and then a full New York Penn League season, one could certainly understand Lowery getting a little bit tired. He’s still just 21 years old, and a big season in the Carolina League could really put him on the map not just in the Indians organization, but nationally as one of the top catching prospects in baseball. He has a strong arm and frequently makes throws to 2B from his knees, but needs to improve his receiving to be more than an average defensive catcher. He’s definitely a guy to keep an eye on as the 2012 season unfolds.
Scott Barnes, SP-COL: 6 IP, ER, H, 2 BB, 7 K. Barnes got off the season on the right foot with a dominant start. The bullpen blew his chance for a W, but that doesn’t dampen his effort yesterday. Six innings, three baserunners, 7 K. My prediction; he’s going to finish 2012 in the rotation in Cleveland.
C.C. Lee, RP-COL: W (1-0), IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 3 K. See why pitcher wins don’t mean anything? Lee gave up a 2-out, 2-run HR to lose the lead for the Clippers, but they came back with 4 in the bottom of the 8th to make him the “winner.” The 3 K’s are good, the 2 ER not so much.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B-COL: 1-3, 2B, BB, R. Chiz is hitting .333/.375/.600 with 1 BB and 1 K in the Clippers four games so far this year.
Matt Pagnozzi, C-COL: 2-3, 3 RBI, BB, R. The veteran catcher drove in 3 of the Clippers 7 runs last night, including a big 2-run single in the bottom of the 8th.
Michael Goodnight, SP-CAR: 5 2/3 IP, 5 ER, 4 H, 7 K, 3 BB. Goodnight actually had a no-hitter going through 5, but lost it in a big way in the 6th, giving up 5 ER in 2/3 of an inning.
Tyler Holt. CF-CAR: 4-4, RBI, BB, 2 R, SB, CS. Holt has been off to a blistering start to the season, as he’s now 8-13 with a 2B and a 3B in the Mudcats three games this year. If you really want to pick nits, I suppose you can complain that he’s just 1-4 in the SB department.
Jesus Aguilar, 1B-CAR: 1-4, 2B, BB, R. BBJA continuing his solid start to 2012 with another XBH.
Jeremie Tice, DH-CAR: 2-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R, BB, K. Nice day for Tice, who also has one of the best twitter handles around. Follow him @BigOleChunkyBoy.
