Mike Rayl, SP-KIN: 6 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 2 BB

Drafted in the 15th round in 2009 out of Palm Beach Community College, the lefthanded Rayl was one of Lake County’s best starting pitchers this year. In Midwest League action, Rayl was 5-5 with a 2.83 ERA and put up a sterling 84/13 K/BB in 82 2/3 IP. Promoted to Kinston, he’s made two starts and is 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA and 9 K in 11 1/3 IP. Rayl is listed at 6’5” and 180lbs, and with his projectable frame is really a guy to keep an eye on next year.

  • Joe Martinez, SP-COL: W (7-5), 2 ER, 5 H, 6 K, BB. Martinez has flown under the radar this year for Columbus, but has had a solid season. Splitting time between the rotation and the bullpen, he has a 4.05 ERA, 69 K and 22 BB in 80 IP for the Clippers.
  • Nick Hagadone, RP-COL: 1 1/3 IP, K. Now with 38 K in 35 1/3 AAA innings, Hagadone could be an integral part of next year’s big-league bullpen.
  • Josh Judy, RP-COL: S (16), H, K. Another potential member of next year’s Bullpen Mafia (©Nino Colla, 2011), Judy has 51 K in 41 1/3 IP and a 2.83 ERA for the Clip Show.
  • Beau Mills, DH-COL: 2-3, HR (2), 2 RBI, R. In 11 AAA games, Mills is hitting .176/.222/.383 with 2 HR and 4 RBI.
  • Cord Phelps, 2B-COL: 1-4, HR (10), 2 RBI, R, K. Since July 1, Phelps is hitting .295 with 3 HR.
  • Bryce Stowell, RP-AKR: IP, 2 R (1 ER), H, 2 K, 2 BB. Stowell now with 6 IP, 9 K, 4 BB and 2 ER for Akron.
  • Adam Miller, RP-AKR: IP, ER, 2 H, K. After allowing just 4 ER in 13 IP in May/June, Miller has given up 17 ER in 13 2/3 IP in July/August. Considering he hadn’t pitched in game situations for 2+ years, I’ll put it down to building back his arm strength.
  • Rob Bryson, RP-AKR: IP, ER, 2 H, BB. It was a rough night for Akron’s Big Three bullpen arms, as each gave up an earned run.
  • Chun Chen, C-AKR: 2-5, HR (12), 3 RBI, R, K. Chen with his 1st HR since July 24, .790 OPS in AA is good, not great. I’m still surprised and disappointed with 91/25 K/BB on the season.
  • Nick Weglarz, LF-AKR: 2-4, 2B, RBI, R, K. His 1st game since July 19 (elbow). Basically a lost season for the injury-prone slugger.
  • Juan Diaz, SS-AKR: 3-4, BB, 2 R, 3 SB. Diaz is 8 for his last 17, and had just 4 SB on the season before his speed outburst yesterday.
  • Preston Guilmet, RP-KIN: S (28), IP, BB. Now two behind Cory Burns for the org lead in saves.
  • Felix Sterling, SP-LCC: L (2-1), 5 IP, ER, 2 H, 5 K, 7 BB. The 6’3, 200lb, 18-year old Dominican has now thrown 16 1/3 innings for Lake County. He’s allowed just 4 ER and struck out 13, but after last night’s spate of wildness has also walked 13.
  • Gio Urshela, 3B-LCC: 2-4, 2 1B. Snapped out of an 0-13 slump with a pair of hits last night. He’s at .241/.266/.355 overall on the season.
  • Luigi Rodriguez, CF-LCC: 1-1, 3 BB, SB, CS. Rodriguez has been outstanding in his 7 games for the Captains, hitting .348/.467/.435 with 3 SB. Most impressive have been the 6 BB against just 3 K for the 18-year old speedster.
  • Will Roberts, SP-MVS: W (1-1), 6 IP, H, 4 K. Roberts allowed a single to the leadoff hitter yesterday. Enraged by this, he picked him off and went on to retire the next 17 in a row to face the minimum through his 6 IP.
  • Jake Lowrey, C-MVS: 1-3, 2B, RBI, BB. Lowrey has an .813 OPS for the Scrappers as he’s showing advanced power and patience. If he can stay behind the plate defensively, the Indians could really have something here.
  • Cody Elliott, CF-MVS: 1-4, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, 2 K. Congrats to Elliott on his 1st professional HR. He’s hitting .258/.346/.344 overall for Mahoning Valley.
  • Jake Sisco, SP-AZL: L (1-3), 1 2/3 IP, 6 ER, 6 H, 3 K, BB. Ouch. Sisco has now allowed 11 ER in his last 8 IP in the complex leagues. The 3rd round pick does have 25 K in 27 1/3 IP.
  • Manuel Carmona, RP-AZL: 2 IP, H, 3 K, BB. Manny has a 2.66 ERA and 36 K in 23 2/3 IP. And he just turned 19 in June.
  • Leonardo Castillo, 1B-AZL: 2-4, 2 K. In his 5 game hitting streak, Castillo is 10-19 with 2 HR and 4 RBI.
