Wire Hitting The Fan Archive Around the Farm: June 12

Three out of four ain’t bad. Columbus, Akron and Kinston all won 1-run games yesterday. Kinston won the longest game in the history of the Perez_3_800x796Carolina League, beating Myrtle Beach 3-2 in 23 innings. They used eight pitchers to get through the game, which lasted 6 hrs and 27 min. Lake County was the lone loser in the minor league system, dropping a 7-2 decision.

Roberto Perez, C-KIN: 4-9, HR (1), RBI, 3 R, BB, K.

A superhuman game for Perez, as he not only led the team in hits with 4, but he scored all three of the K-Tribe runs and caught ALL 23 INNINGS. I honestly cannot imagine how exhausted he must have been after catching 23 innings in the Carolina heat, and the fact that he was able to swing a bat at all by inning 23 is a miracle. Not only was he able to swing, but he led off the inning with a single and came around to score the winning run and send everyone home. I’d say that Roberto earned himself the day off today, but Kinston has a doubleheader scheduled so he’ll probably find himself behind the dish yet again. Perez is hitting .462/.523/.692 over his last 10 games, and is up to a very respectable .259/.398/.370 on the season. He’s leading the team in OBP and is 5th in AVG, all while playing gold glove defense behind the plate.

  • Jenmar Gomez, SP-COL: W (6-1), 6 IP, ER, 5 H, 5 K, 3 BB. Gomez has put together an impressive string of starts. In his last 5 outings, he’s 3-0 having given up just 6 ER in 36 IP. He’s got 25 K and allowed 13 BB in that time.
  • Jason Kipnis, 2B-COL: 2-5, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 K. Kip had a helluva weekend, going 8-13 with 2 HR and a 3B. He’s up to .295/.370/.496 overall and reviews of his defense have been positive. Likely the next position player to get the call.
  • Zeke Carrera, CF-COL: 2-3, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R. A rare XBH for Zeke, as he now has just 10 on the season (6 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR).
  • Jared Goedert, 1B-COL: 2-5, HR (3), 3 RBI, R, K. Goedert with HR in back-to-back starts, and now has 6 in 77 AB between Akron and Columbus.
  • Nick Johnson, DH-COL: 1-5, 2B, 3 K. Johnson has exactly one hit in all four of his starts in Columbus. All four starts have been at DH, so don’t look for him to come up and spell LaPorta anytime soon.
  • Shelly Duncan, RF-COL: 2-5, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, K. Sloth broke out after three hitless games to begin his tenure in Columbus.
  • Matt Langwell, RP-AKR: IP, H, K. Langwell has thrown 11 1/3 scoreless innings over his last 7 outings, striking out 11 and not walking a batter.
  • Cory Burns, RP-AKR: S (16), IP, 2 K. Burns has his ERA down to 3.24 on the season, and has 36 K against just 6 BB in his 25 IP for Akron.
  • Chun Chen, C-AKR: 2-5, 2B, RBI, R, 3 K. Chen has been solid, but not spectacular this year. He has a season line of .284/.327/.471 with 8 HR and 33 RBI. Most disappointing is his 59 strikeouts against just 13 walks. For a guy who walked more than he struck out for high-A Kinston last year, that’s a disappointing ratio.
  • Nick Weglarz, RF-AKR: 1-3, 2B, R, K. Wegz is 4-21 since arriving in Akron, with 3 of the 4 hits being doubles.
  • Matt McBride, DH-AKR: 2-3, RBI. McBride has put together an impressive stretch, with a .357/.356/.762 line over his last 10.
  • Brett Brach, SP-KIN: 6 IP, ER, 3 H, 3 K, 2 BB. Brach had a solid start yesterday, but his 6 IP represented barely ¼ of the game.
  • Preston Guilmet, RP-KIN: 1 1/3 IP, ER, 3 H, 2 BB. Guilmet blew his 1st save of the year, and it ended up costing the bullpen another 14 IP.
  • Francisco Jimenez, RP-KIN: 5 IP, 2 H, 8 K, 2 BB. Jimenez threw more innings than any other K-Tribe reliever, and his 5 dominating innings helped give the Kinston offense a chance to win it in the 23rd.
  • Chris Jones, RP-KIN: W (2-0), 3 IP, H, BB. Jonesy will have his name attached to a record, as he was the winning pitcher in the longest game in league history.
  • Casey Frawley, SS-KIN: 2-11, RBI, 6 K. Frawley came up with a two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the 23rd after striking out 6 times. Still, all anyone should remember is the last AB.
  • Abner Abreu, RF-KIN: 2-9, BB, 3 SB, 2 K. Abreu was stranded in scoring position three times on the day for Kinston.
  • Justin Toole, 3B-KIN: 3-8, RBI, BB, SB, K. Toole is putting together a solid season, hitting .294/.346/.384 while playing all over the infield (2B/1B/3B).
  • Drew Pomeranz, PC-KIN: As the previous day’s starting pitcher, Pomeranz was responsible for charting that monster of a game. Here’s hoping he gets today off and doesn’t have hand cramps from all of that writing.
  • Michael Goodnight, SP-LCC: L (5-4), 3 IP, 3 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 4 BB. Goodnight again struggled with his command, walking 4 for the 3rd time in his last 4 starts.
  • Rob Bryson, RP-LCC: 1 1/3 IP, ER, 3 H. Bryson gave up a solo HR yesterday, and has surprisingly allowed 2 ER in his last 2 IP for Lake County.
  • Ronny Rodriguez, SS-LCC: 1-4, HR (4), 2 RBI, R, K. Ro-Ro has shown some pop since arriving in the US, with 4 HR in 89 AB in the Midwest League.
  • Jesus Aguilar, 1B-LCC: 2-4, 2B, R. The 20-year old Aguilar has hit in 9 of his last 10, and has a .400/.432/.686 line in that timeframe.
