Around the Farm takes a quick look at how some of the prospects throughout the Indians system performed in yesterday's games. As always, the positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's game.
Columbus had their game suspended after 4 innings yesterday, but we'll still include the stats they did manage to accumulate in the writeup here today. Akron split an early doubleheader, Kinston won despite not getting a whole lot of offense, and Lake County dropped both games of their doubleheader.
Tim Fedroff, LF-AKR: 5-7, 2 2B, RBI, R
Far and away the hottest hitter in the Akron lineup, Fedroff now has a 12-game hitting streak going for the Aeros. Fedroff went 0-5 back on May 2, and was hitting .287 after that game. After yesterday's game, Fedroff is hitting .364. In his last 12 games, Fedroff has been 24-48 overall. I'm not great at math, but I'm pretty sure he's hitting .500 (!) in his last 12 games. Overall, Fedroff has a .364/.404/.488 line with 2 HR and 19 RBI. He has 10 walks against 19 K on the season. He's an aggressive hitter who's shown a plus hit tool this year for the Aeros. The 24-year old Fedroff is repeating AA, but is doing everything he can to earn a shot at AAA Columbus in 2011.
Mitch Talbot, SP-COL: 4 IP, ER, 4 H, 5 K, BB. Talbot didn't quite unleash the fury, but a solid start nonetheless. Good to see he is still missing some bats and his fastball is still moving.
Cord Phelps, SS-COL: 1-2, HR (7), RBI, R. I'm having trouble understanding why Phelps isn't in Cleveland right now.
Jason Kipnis, 2B-COL: 1-2, HR (4), RBI, R. Led off the game with a HR, hitting leadoff because Zeke Carrera was a late scratch to preserve him in case he is needed in Cleveland.
Joe Gardner, SP-AKR: W (3-2), 6 IP, ER, 4 H, 5 K, BB. Big bounceback start for Gardner, who struggled to find the strike zone his last time out. Great to see the 5/1 K/BB ratio, not to mention the 12.00 GO/AO number he posted last night.
Cory Burns, RP-AKR: IP, 2 K. Yesterday was Burns' 4th straight scoreless outing for the Aeros.
Juan Diaz, SS-AKR: 2-7, 2B, RBI, R, CS. Part of the Russell Branyan deal last year, Diaz is hitting .293/.356/.439 in his last 10 games for Akron. He's responded well since being moved up to the 3-hole in the order.
Karexon Sanchez-2B, AKR: 2-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, R. Sanchez is hitting just .185/.264/.364 overall, but has gone for .313/.371/.563 with 2 HR and 10 RBI in his last 10 games.
Clayton Cook, SP-KIN: W (3-3), 5 2/3 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 8 H, 5 K. Yesterday was Cook's 3rd start in a row without walking a batter (17 2/3 IP). His ERA is down to 3.98 on the season, and has 33 K and 12 BB in 40 2/3 IP for Kinston.
Preston Guilmet, RP-KIN: S (7), IP, H, K. Guilmet has still not allowed an earned run this year, and has now thrown 14 2/3 scoreless innings to open the season. He has 15 K, and also has yet to walk a batter this season.
Casey Frawley, SS-KIN: 2-4, RBI, R, K. The K-Tribe had 6 hits yesterday, and Frawley had 2 of them. He was the only Kinston player to have a multi-hit game.
Roberto Perez, C-KIN: 1-2, 2B, RBI, BB. Perez had one of the two XBH that the K-Tribe mustered yesterday, a big RBI 2B to get the offense going early on.
Kyle Blair, SP-LCC: L (2-2), 2 2/3 IP, 8 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 6 BB. Blair's worst start as a pro. He just couldn't find the strike zone yesterday. His ERA shot all the way up to 5.50 on the season.
Clayton Ehlert, RP-LCC: 4 IP, 4 K. Ehlert gave the Captains four solid innings of relief in game two yesterday. He's now gone three straight scoreless appearances spanning 6 iP, striking out 7 and not walking a batter.
Anthony Gallas, RF-LCC: 4-7, 2 2B, RBI, 2 BB, K. Gallas remains sizzling at the plate, and has hit in 9 of his last 10. He's put up a .486/.561/.743 line in his last 10 games, with a HR and 6 2B.
Gio Urshela, 3B-LCC: 3-9, RBI, R, K. Urshela has been ice-cold lately, but he's hit in 3 games in a row now, and is hopefully turning the corner and will start producing at the plate again. He started off the season red-hot, but has hit just .159/.194/.270 in the month of May.
Ronny Rodriguez, SS-LCC: 1-9, HR, RBI, R, SB, K. One of the Indians highest profile international signings with his 1st pro HR and SB yesterday for the Captains.
LeVon Washington, CF-LCC: 1-5, 4 BB, R, SB, 3 K. Washington doing what a good leadoff hitter does; getting on base and running once he gets there.
