Around the Farm: April 27
Another winning day in the system, as all three teams in action won at least one game. Columbus picked up a victory off a strong starting pitching performance, Kinston split a doubleheader and Lake County held on after an early 6-0 lead to win a wild one, 10-9. This may shock you, but Akron was rained out.
Gio Soto, SP-KIN: W (1-3), 6 IP, 3 H, 6 K, BB
Masterful start by Soto, who’s 1-3 record does not do justice to how well he has pitched this year. He’s sporting a very respectable 3.05 ERA with a 20/7 K/BB ratio in his 20 2/3 IP for the K-Tribe. Soto is the arm the Indians acquired in the Jhonny Peralta trade, and won’t turn 20 until mid-May. He’s a projectable lefty who should continue to add zip on his fastball as he fills out his 6’3”, 180lb frame. Raise your hand if you’d rather have Peralta than Soto.
Scott Barnes, SP-COL: W (1-1), 6 2/3 IP, 2 H, 7 K, 5 BB. Barnes’ 2nd start in Columbus went better than his first, but the walks are still concerning.
Cord Phelps, 2B-COL: 2-3, RBI, BB. Say it with me…Free Cord Phelps. He’s reached base in 8 straight games, and is at .343/.489/.507 on the season. Free Cord Phelps. Get this kid in Cleveland, and do it now. Smarter people than myself are saying the same thing.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B-COL: 1-4, R, K. Can’t get 4 hits every day.
Jason Kipnis, DH-COL: 1-3, BB, R, K. “Up” to .250/.364/.406 on the season
Clayton Cook, SP-KIN: L (1-2), IP, 9 ER, 6 H, 2 BB. Ugly start for Cook, who had given up just 4 ER in 16 IP before yesterday. His ERA is going to take a while to come down after he posted a 81.00 mark yesterday.
Casey Frawley, SS-KIN: 2-6, HR (1), 2B, 2 RBI, BB, 2 R, K. Frawley filled up the stat sheet yesterday, and has been solid lately for the K-Tribe.
Justin Toole, 2B-KIN: 2-7, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R. Toole is a little old for A ball (24), but anytime a UDFA is putting up a .333/.407/.438 line you have to be happy.
Clayton Ehlert, RP-LCC: S (5), IP, H, 2 K. Ehlert nailed down the save in a wild 10-9 victory for Lake County. He’s been a steady presence in the Captains bullpen, and has now gone 6 straight appearances without allowing a run.
Alex Monsalve, C-LCC: 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R. Monsalve is outshining his more highly-regarded counterpart at Lake County so far this season. He’s sitting pretty with a .324/.390/.466 line so far.
Nick Bartlone, SS-LCC: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R. Rango! Still struggling overall with a sub-.600 OPS, but a nice game yesterday in a Captains victory.
