Wire Hitting The Fan Archive Around the Farm: April 26
Written by Al Ciammiachella

Around the Farm takes a quick look at how some of the prospects throughout the Indians system performed in yesterday's games. As always, the positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's game.

Columbus with a big win last night, including some solid performances from four of my top prospects in the system. Akron split a doubleheader, Kinston caught the rainout bug from Akron and was postponed, and Lake County had their comeback come up one run short. So as a whole, the kids went an even 2-2 last night. But you don't care who won or lost...you just care how they did it. On to the individual performances:

Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B-COL: 4-5, RBI, 2 R, K

Amazing what one good night can do for your batting average this early in the season. Chiz saw his average jump to .258 after his big night at the dish, and one Chiz4_800x793of his four hits was even off of a left handed pitcher! Chiz is 9-26 (.346) in his last 6 games, and is really showing signs of snapping out of his early-season funk. His splits are still concerning, as he’s hitting .394 (13-33) against RHP and just .121 (4-22) against LHP.  And I suppose you could complain that he’s only hit one home run. But that’s just picking nits, and I’d tell you to enjoy last night’s 4-5 and expect more performances like that in the days to come.

  • David Huff, SP-COL: 7 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 9 H. A Tomlinesque performance with no strikeouts or walks. Pitched with a big lead for most of the night.
  • Zach Putnam, RP-COL: S (3), 2 IP, 3 K. Last night’s outing runs Putnam’s consecutive scoreless inning streak to 9. He has 9 K and 2 BB over that time as well.
  • Cord Phelps, SS-COL: 2-4, BB, R, K. Those that follow me on twitter are aware of my “Free Cord Phelps!” campaign. I think he’d be an immediate upgrade over Uncle Orlando.
  • Chad Huffman, RF-COL: 3-4, 2 RBI. What, no home run? Huffman has now driven in 17 runs for the Clippers.
  • Nick Hagadone, RP-AKR: W (1-0), 3 IP, H, 4 K. Another dominant outing for Hagadone, who should be pitching in Columbus pretty soon. He’s allowed 8 baserunners and struck out 18 in 13 2/3 scoreless innings so far for the Aeros.
  • Eric Berger, SP-AKR: 4 IP, 4 H, 5 K, 2 BB. Solid spot start for Berger in the 2nd game of the doubleheader, which the Aeros eventually won 1-0.
  • Tim Fedroff, LF-AKR: 4-6, 3B, RBI, R. Fedroff with a solid .328/.375/.483 line for Akron so far this season.
  • Jason Donald, 3B-AKR: 0-3. Donald is hitting just .214 in AA during his rehab stint. Combine that with Jack Hanahan’s performance at the plate and in the field for Cleveland, and it could be a while before we see Donald in Cleveland.
  • Gio Urshela, 3B-LCC: 1-4, HR (2), RBI, R, K. Urshela has cooled down a little after his sizzling start, but still has a .319/.354/.472 line going for the Captains. With his glove, that’s plenty of bat.
  • Carlos Moncrief, CF-LCC: 1-3, HR (3), 3 RBI, R, BB, 2 K, CS. Moncrief is 7-20 in his last 6 games, with 3 HR and a triple. He also has one of the best OF arms in the system.
  • Jason Smit, RF-LCC: 2-3, BB, R. Smitty just keeps on hitting, and is back over .400 on the season (.406).
