Browns Win Coin Flip, Pick 3rd In NFL Draft
When you're a Browns fan, you'll take all the good news you can get. And we got some this morning. The Browns won the coin flip with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier today at the NFL Scouting Combine to determine who would get the #3 overall pick in this April's NFL Draft. This is good news on a number of levels for the Browns, which I break down in my latest.
When you're a Browns fan, you'll take all the good news you can get. And we got some this morning. The Browns won the coin flip with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this morning at the NFL Scouting Combine to determine who would get the #3 overall pick in this April's NFL Draft.
This is good news on a number of levels for the Browns.
We've been talking "trade down" for close to a decade in this town as the draft approaches. Yet the Browns have been unable to parlay their annually high draft selections into a situation where they could move down, add more picks, and address more of the holes on this football team. Trading down is one of those things that's alot easier said that done. However, the Browns should be in their best position to do that this year if they choose. And the chances of doing so were soldified with this morning's coin flip.
Most scouts and scouting services agree that their are four potentially elite talents in this year's draft. QB JaMarcus Russell from LSU, Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn, Oklahoma RB Adrian Peterson, and WR Calvin Johnson from Georgia Tech. Specifically, Johnson is seen as the surest thing in this years draft, and there are a number of teams in the upper to middle portion of the first round that desperately need an elite pass catcher. In addition, it seemed to be a lock that the Bucs would have selected Johnson at #3 had they won the flip and he was still on the board. And it appears highly unlikely that the Raiders or Lions would select a wide reciever with one of th etop two selections.
So now, the Browns hold all the cards with the talented wideout from Georgia Tech. And the same applies if Brady Quinn is still on the board at #3.
Something that has become very popular over the last couple years is
the "Draft Pick Value Chart",
which assigns numeric values to every draft pick from the first overall pick to the final pick in the seventh round, number 262. This chart was initially created by someone inside one of the NFL team's scouting departments, and has spread like wildfire across the internet. Allegedly, this is the guide many teams use in attaching value to draft picks when considering trading picks.
The value of the 3rd overall pick is 2,200 ... and the value of the 4th pick is 1,800. The difference of 400 points is worth a middle second round pick in itself.
Stay tuned to The Cleveland Fan for all the best coverage leading up to this year's NFL Draft, which commences at 12 noon on Saturday, April 28th.
