May 3, 2008 - By Dan Wismar
Coach Tressel has always managed to keep most of Ohio's best talent at home to play for the Buckeyes, and now any doubts that remained about his ability to recruit out-of-state talent in competition with the other national powers have been convincingly put to rest as the Sweater Vest is putting together a 2009 recruiting class for the ages. Landing Terrelle Pryor and four other Parade All-Americans in 2008 has given the Buckeyes some momentum, and so far the Buckeyes are enjoying the ride. Dan Wismar takes a look at how the '09 class is shaping up for us in his latest.

Jim Tressel has had his share of off the field issues to deal with in his tenure as the head man at The Ohio State University. The Sweater Vest has a long history of refusing to comment publicly on doghoused players, but people that pay close attention to the team can spot the warning signs. Furls says the doghouse is full of notable names this spring, and that there are several young players that may be able to take advantage of it and become key members of the 2008 squad.

The surprise return of Malcolm Jenkins, James Laurinaitis, Alex Boone, and Marcus Freeman has left fewer vacancies for new faces than Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes have experienced in years past. This year the scarlet and gray will return 18 of 22 starters, more than anyone expected. That means that there are essentially only three starting spots open, with a lot of talented players competing for them. In his latest, Furls looks at the three starting spots up for grabs for the Bucks, and the players competing for them.

April 20, 2008 - By Dan Wismar
There aren't a lot of question marks for a team returning 18 starters from the BCS Championship Game, but the one concerning who will back up Buckeye quarterback Todd Boeckman in 2008 was largely answered Saturday in the OSU Spring Game. And no, he's not a freshman from Jeannette, PA. For his first assigment, we sent new writer Dan Wismar out in the rain to cover the Scarlet & Gray spring game for us, and Dan says the depth in Columbus is as strong as it's ever been in the Tressel era.

Ohio State football is rich in tradition, and since his hiring, Coach Tressel has made the upholding of these traditions a cornerstone of his program in Columbus. From the Buckeye Grove, to script Ohio, to Carmen Ohio, to Michigan Week, to tailgating, Woody, and The Shoe ... these traditions are part of what makes it so great to be a fan of the scarlet and gray. In his latest, Furls runs down his five favorites.

When Don Nehlen, the former West Virginia Mountaineers head coach, joked that Terrelle Pryor going to Michigan was probably more important than the Wolverines securing Rich Rodriguez as their next head coach, few figured at the time that it really was one of those "funny because it's true" kind of jokes. Now they know. Jim Tressel 1 Rich Rodriguez 0. Gary talks about it.

The saga has ended and Terrelle Pryor is officially a Buckeye. It was a long and trying recruitment but in the end it was worth it. For today, Ohio State's 2008 recruiting class not only got stronger but did so at the expense of their arch nemesis. Regardless of Pryor's impact on the field next year, one thing is certain. The 2008 Michigan Wolverines are worse because Pryor is not there, and that is a good thing. Furls hits on the monumental signing for the Buckeyes.

February 7, 2008 - By Mike Furlan
The Ohio State Buckeyes officially added 19 new players yesterday on national signing day, and still have very lofty hopes for a high profile 20th player to be added to this class. The Buckeyes landed the two top inside linebacker prospects, three of the top eight left tackles, and still hope to land #1 overall recruit Terrelle Pryor. And who other but Furls to return to the front page to make sense of it all for us?

For all those Ohio State fans still lamenting head coach Jim Tressel's second straight loss in the national championship game, Gary has two words for you: Rich Rodriguez. Rodriguez has barely been head coach of the Michigan Wolverines for a month yet in that short period of time he's created enough adversity for himself that the Michigan administration might as well fly a red flag permanently. And with each passing day, Buckeye fans discover a new reason to appreciate what they have in Tressel as the contrast between him and Rodriguez couldn't be starker.

We always knew there were voices inside the head of Mansfield Lucas, and now, after his latest piece, we have proof. Still not over the depression of the Buckeyes loss to LSU last Monday night, Mansfield addresses the game by taking a look at it from two completely different points of view. That of the unabashed and adamant Tressel supporter. And also from the viewpoint of the angry fan that feels the back to back NC game losses have revealed flaws in the program.

The outpouring of emotion following the Ohio State Buckeyes second consecutive loss in a national championship game has been rampant in our message forums. Some can't believe that the Buckeyes laid an egg for two years in a row. Others are simply angry about it and lashing out in every direction. There's been some transient levels of bargaining and depression but little, to this point, acceptance. Then there's Bill Livingston.

It could have been different, it just wasn't. And as a result, Ohio State finds itself again wondering how they let still another national championship slip away from them. On the morning after, Gary Benz takes a look at what could have been, and the defining moments from last nights 38-24 loss to the LSU Tigers.

Well Buckeye fans, our worst nightmares came true. And for the second straight year, Ohio State was dominated in the BCS Title Game by a school from the SEC as the LSU Tigers came back from a 10-0 deficit to beat the Buckeyes by a 38-24 count. Brian McPeek saddled up to knock out a live running game diary for all you masochists out there. How long 'till pitchers and catchers report?
January 7, 2008 - By Mike Furlan
Five months ago the Buckeyes started the season with modest expectations after losing nearly the entire offense to the NFL draft. They were pegged as a seven or eight win team with absolutely no national title expectations. And while Furls says the Buckeyes are playing with the House's money, the stakes are still high. Another devastating loss in the National Title Game and the Buckeyes will run the risk of becoming the college football equivalent of the 1980's Denver Broncos or the 1990's Buffalo Bills.

Furls continues his break down of the national championship for us, and takes a look at the Buckeye offense and how they match up with the LSU defense. Furls says LSU coach Les Miles is going to stack the line of scrimmage, and that Beanie Wells must play well enough to force LSU to gamble to stop the run, and Todd Boeckman must play well enough to make the Tigers pay when they do.
January 6, 2008 - By Jesse Lamovsky
The contestants in Monday's BCS Championship Game share a brief but memorable past. Two decades ago, back in the days of the old locked-in bowl system when marquee intra-conference games were a relative staple of the early-season college football schedule, Ohio State and Louisiana State butted helmets in a pair of classic contests, both of which came down nearly to the final snap. Resident historian Jesse Lamovsky takes us back in time ...

Mansfield Lucas is fired up for Monday night's Buckeyes-LSU game. In his latest piece, he scoffs at the Buckeye fans fearful of another bad loss, dispels the myth of "SEC speed", and lays out his keys to the game for the scarlet and gray. We're just one day away ... Buckeyes/Tigers tomorrow night for all the marbles. And we'll be running columns on the game right up to kickoff.
January 5, 2008 - By Mike Furlan
Right on cue, Furls checks in with the first part of a three column installment that will preview Monday nights BCS Championship Game between THE Ohio State Buckeyes and the Louisiana State Tigers. In Part I, Furls takes a look at the LSU offense and how he sees the Buckeye defense matching up with them. The Tigers are a strong running team and have several talented playmakers like Early Doucet (pictured), but Furls says to expect a much more aggressive defensive scheme than last year vs. Florida.
January 4, 2008 - By Gary Benz
It's been painful as a Buckeye fan, listening to the national media trash this team for the last six weeks. In Gary's latest, he says that Buckeye fans have heard so much of it, they're starting to believe it, creating a palpable sense of dread in the air for Buckeyes fans secretly terrified of a repeat of last year. Can Jim Tressel funnel this negativity, embrace the role of underdog, and translate it into a win Monday and a national title? Gary opines ...
January 1, 2008 - By Mike Furlan
Heading into next Monday national championship game, conventional wisdom is that Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes are going to try and give LSU a heavy dose of Beanie Wells, running behind that giant Ohio State defensive line. LSU will be aided in their attempts to stop this attack by the return of a healthy Glenn Dorsey, the nations premier defensive tackle, and a guy many feel the Dolphins will take with the #1 overall pick in the draft. In his latest, Furls takes a look at the OSU offense, the LSU defense, and also the game plan the Buckeyes will likely employ offensively.

The early bowl game results are starting to spill in, and Furls says that the talking heads are at it already, beginning to correlate bowl records to conference strength as though the former speaks definitively about the latter. In his latest column, Furls takes a deeper look at what has happened in the December bowl games, and makes a couple correlations of his own.
December 27, 2007 - By Mike Furlan
You lose one game 41-14 and all of a sudden you are the rabble of the college football landscape. Suddenly the 11 first round draft picks in the last four NFL drafts, tops in the NCAA, are forgotten, just don't seem to matter; your team is just too slow to compete. To hear the media talk anymore you would have to believe that the Buckeyes are the most overrated, talentless team in the nation. Furls examines the national perception of the Buckeyes in his latest column.
December 21, 2007 - By Gary Benz
There is a Chinese proverb that says in desperation, a dog will leap over a wall. Over the many decades of its existence, the University of Michigan has attempted to build a certain wall of elitism around its school. Gary Benz says they just jumped that wall with the hiring of Rich Rodriguez ... who is not only an outsider, but is a guy that will always have one eye firmly trained on the next opportunity of a lifetime. Great, great stuff from Gary here.

The Cleveland State Vikings basketball team? Remember them? Mouse McFadden, the Ransey brothers, Eric Mudd? Well guess what ... CSU is back. Gary Waters is coaching the team, they already have wins over Florida State and South Florida, and they take on the Buckeyes tonight down at The Q. The Vikings have added some serious talent to this team, and have a bright future. In his first column for us, Ryan Aroney gives us a snapshot of the Vikes, and previews tonight's tilt with OSU.
