Thanks for stepping up and starting a thread for the K-Tribe Daz. Folks, let's keep all game threads in this one thread or any comments about games...also general news and such. Big news can get its own thread.

Just a request/suggestion. We won't be dictators here as it is expected some discussion will spill over into other threads and new ones.

Steven Wright tows the rubber tonight. I'm not too enthusiastic of him still being on the starting staff, but oh well.

Man, what a nice collection of hitting prospects though: SS Rivero, 2B Goedert, 1B Mills, OF Weglarz, 1B Todd Martin, OF John Drennen, and OF Cirilo Cumberbatch.

Wright with 2 flawless innings to start the game, with a pair of K's

Interestingly for the K-Tribe Goedert is starting the game at 3B (expected to see a lot of 2B time) and Mills is starting at 1B with Martin the DH.

Still scoreless mid 2.

typical of a lot of Wrights starts that. Its his second time through the lineup that he has trouble. Back to back doubles from Rivero and Cumberbatch has the K-Tribe up 2-0.

Nick Weglarz gets his season off to a good start with a single in his first AB.

3 straight 2-out RBI doubles by Carlos Rivero, Cirilo Cumberbatch and Alex Castillo give the K-Tribe a 3-0 lead after 2.

After 3 straight singles by Drennen, Mills and Goedert to load the bases with none out for Weglarz the K-Tribe are in a delay for a power failure!

Yeah, what a mess last night. Game will be restarted where it left off late this afternoon and then they will play the regular scheduled game after it but only play 7 innings.

Kinston still trying to finish Friday's opener after getting washed out Saturday. The goal today is to finish the opener first and then play a 7 inning second game.

My guess is that Hector Rondon picks up in the first game and Paulo Espino starts the second game but I am not really sure. Since the first game got to the 3rd inning it is set up pretty well to almost be like 2 seven inning games.

Excited to get baseball started for real in Kinston.

Quick question..Kinston has a catcher on the roster by the name of Alex Castillo..and is listed as 30 yrs. old?? I can't remember seeing someone in the Carolina League at that age. Is that age a mistake, or is there a real reason that a 30 yr. old is still in A ball?

It is a typo. Castillo is 22 and won't turn 23 until November. Although, being that he is from the Dominican Republic, maybe the person who entered the "incorrect" age knows something. I mean, guys always end up being older than their Visa says, right?

Anyway, man, I hate all these rainouts. I want to get this season rolling where there are four games every night and not 1-2 as there have been.

This has got to be really maddening to these guys. With the fast start they had in the opener only to be 'darked' out by a yet unexplained power outage (well, actually explained but not to my satisfaction, at least) and then three days of rain. The only silver lining is that games in the minors usually have their stats counted even if it isn't an official game because they tend to finish the game from the point it was delayed.

Tony has talked about the hitting at Akron but I am thinking that the hitting in Kinston may be competitive to that of the Aeros as the season plays out.

BTW, even though it was small sample size an encouraging start for Steven Wright in that first game.

A city-operated breaker failed at a substation and created a complete or partial power outage for about 5,600 customers. Supposedly, a usually reliable component of the breaker failed around 7 p.m. and it forced city utility workers to rerout power along alternate circuits until all customers had power again by 10:45 p.m.

Tony,

I read that article in the Kinston paper on-line over the weekend and was tongue-in-cheek based on that article. My comment was on the "usually reliable" aspect.

I'll be in Woodbridge, VA on Friday night to take in the Kinston/Potomac game at Pftizer Stadium. I'm going to try and nail down as many guys as I can for interviews since Kinston will be the team I see the least this year, but if anyone has any suggestions let me know.

I'm thinking of nailing down Carlton Smith. One, to do an article on him, but also get some stuff on his brother Cory so I can do a "Where as they now feature" later on in the month. I'd like to get some of the Latin kids like Perdomo, Rondon, Gomez, Rivero, etc, but I am unsure how much English they speak or if anyone will be available to translate.

I'll also talk to Martin, Taylor, Stiller, Weglarz, Meyer and Tomlin as I know them and their families well, but may be more a casual talk and not an interview. Although, I have never "interviewed" Taylor and Meyer before.

Like I said, any suggestions or ideas, let me know. I like to get input from others before I do this stuff so I am sure I answer some questions others have rather than just my own.

The K-Tribe get a game in!!!!!! Although I think their gloves still thought there was a rain delay.

They lose 8-7 comitting 4 errors (Rondon, Rivero {2} and Castillo) which lead to 5 unearned runs.

Rondon took the loss allowing 5 runs (2 earned) in 3.2IP (5H, 4BB, 6K)

Rivero tried to make up for his glove at the plate - 2-for-5 with a 2B and 2 RBI

Mills 3-for-4 with a HR and 3RBI

John Drennen 2-for-5 with a 2B

Nick Weglarz was only 0-for-2 but walked 3 times.

OID,

Remember that there are latent stats from the opener that will not become active until the game becomes official when it is completed. Among those is three hitless innings from Wright and a Weglarz hit.

I didn't realize that. Weglarz has a hit tonight, a double. 1-2 with 2 more walks and no strikeouts. Mills is 1-2 with a double and a walk.

It's 9-5 in the 7th though.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb ... a_kinafa_1

Wow, another walk for Weglarz. That's 6 walks and 1 strikeout in the 2 games that count so far. They are batting in the bottom of the 9th, down 9-8.

Kinston fall by that 9-8 score.

Pitching all round pretty poor, with the exception of Stillers 2 shutout innings.

Rivero 3-for-5
Joe Dirt 2-for-5

As mentioned, Weglarz 1-for-2 with a 2B and 3BB (6BB = .700OBP in 2 games).

Through my work, I will be in Kinston visiting a client who owns a 1/2% of the team. He is highly motivated to take me to either:

1) 4/21 or 4/22 vs. Salem or

2) 5/12 or 5/13 vs. Wilmington DE

I am extremely pumped about this, and just went back and printed Lastoria's preview article in this Board (thank you).

Besides bragging, I wanted to ask here which date would you all select, and why?

I'm thinking the earlier the better, to be sure some of the higher prospects are still there. Thanks in advance!!

With no other thoughts in mind than the weather..... the later in the year the better.

Most of the top guys will be in Kinston for a large chunk (if not all) of the year. Mills is probably the only guy on the fast track and he's blocked in Akron by Whitney and Aubrey.

Man. What a marathon tonight. K-Tribe down 5-4 in the bottom of the 16th. Frederick has run out of pitchers and have turned to a position player to close the game. Mills singles, Goedert singles, wild pitch and they give Weglarz the free pass.

So bases loaded with no outs and Rivero up.

An absolute monster of a game. I'm sure the Kinstton staff are wondering what they've done to piss off the higher powers. No games for 3 days and then this behemoth.

Some great pitching from the K-Tribe there. Jeanmar Gomez took the start and pitched 5 innings 6 hits no runs and 9 strikeouts.

Followed by Luis Perdomo who had 2 hitless innings.

The other notable performance was from Heath Taylor who pitched 4 and 2/3 while only giving up one hit.

As mentioned, K-Tribe win 6-5 in 15 innings.

Great debut for Jeanmar Gomez - 5IP, 6H, 1R, 0BB, 9K (only K'd 94 in 140IP last year at Low A).

Perdomo (2IP, 0H) and Heath Taylor (4.2IP, 1H) with stellar jobs in relief. Deters, Wagner and Tomlin (1-1) all gave up runs out of the pen.

Nick Weglarz only 1-for-6, but with 2 more BB - that's 8 walks in 3 games (good for a .556OBP).

Mills (.429) 2-for-7

Joe Dirt (.313) 2-for-6 (just to let you know I'm gonna call Goedert "Joe Dirt" all year!!)

Rivero (.471) 3-for-7 with the game winning hit.

Eight walks in 10 official AB's is sic, Shall we say Adam Dunn :-) :)

Hey Daz, if you did not know, it is actually "Geh Dirt" and not "Joe Dirt". :P :-P

Anyway, I am in Woodbridge at the moment. That stinking game caused the team to leave at 11am instead of 8am this morning to get here. Which means they will literally be arriving at gametime.

I'll try to provide updates tonight from the game. I'll be in and out of the press box to take some video and pictures, as well as talk to some of the pitchers charting (I hope Wright/Smith chart and not Rondon/Gomez....I don't speak a lick of Spanish! )

Not sure who I will talk to tonight because of the way they will be rushed when they get here, so I am hoping to grab a few after the game. I know about a half dozen of these guys realy well, so I may be able to catch em for a moment or two before it to catch up quickly.

I'm curious to talk to Wegz really quick and find out if he is being overly patient (8 walks) or no one is giving him anything to hit.

Chad Cordero on the hill tonight for the Nationals.....rehab start.

Kinston guys got in late, at 5:20.

Weglarz has been overly patient.....laying off some real close pitches. Just hasn't pulled the trigger. All the guys are shaking off the rust after not playing for nine days.

Espino on the hill for the K-Tribe.

Espino does not look good tonight. Everything getting hammered. But, he has to suck it up. Only Stiller and Meyer are really available tonight. If they have to go deeper, a position player likely throws.

Doesn't look good. Hopefully more later.

I actually got it on video. Swung the bat and hit a groundball and fell right down holding his right calf. Looks like a strain, couldn't put any pressure on it coming out.

I think Wegs will be okay. Talked to him and manager Tremie after the game. Ankle sprain. They will re-evaluate it tomorrow to see how bad it is. Probably will miss a few games at least.

I have the video of thre inury, but can't upload because I did not bring my cords. Will load it up over the weekend.

Interviewed Espino (rough night), Meyer, Jerad Head and Carlton Smith (he was a tough one to interview). Should have articles on them in the coming week.

K-Tribe up 2-0 after 4.

Jared Head with a 2-run HR

Stephen Wright with 4 scoreless innings with 5K.

Tony.... you at the game?? If so, how does Wright look..... add this performance so far to his start last week in the rainout (which hasn't counted) and he's looking pretty good on paper.

Wright has looked good so far. We'll see on him, but he is off to a MUCH better start this year than last. I was suprised to see him still in the rotation as I thought he would move to the bullpen, but they stuck with him.

Wright and Goedert with good games today, another multi-hit game by Goedert. If he follows the pattern I expect, the walk rate and power should start to come pretty soon, after confirming his contact ability at Kinston.

Last year, he got off to a bad start there after being promoted from Lake County, and I would think that he is trying to establish a high base batting average and then dialing up the power. He seems very impressive thus far.

What is the story with Wright, something changed from last season?

I'm not sure what has changed with Wright. Next time I get to see Kinston if he is still pitching well, I'll ask him.

Bullpen and defense blow the game for the K-Tribe tonight.

Stiller gave up 4 runs, 3 earned in an inning of work before Cumberbatch dropped the 3rd out in the 8th to allow 2 unearned runs to score and tie the game.

Perdomo gave up those 2 runs inspite of throwin 3 no hit innings.

Neil Wagner loses the game allowing a run in the bottom of the 11th.

Goedert 3-for-5 with a 2B and 2RBI

2 hits a piece for Davis, Rivero, Cumberbatch, Head and Castillo as the K-Tribe out hit Potomac 16 to 11

Bad game by Cumberbatch, despite the two hits. He had an error in the bottom of the 8th allowing the two runs to score against Perdomo, then he struck out in the top of the 9th with the lead run on 3rd and 2 out.

K-Tribe lose 9-4 as Rondon gets banged around for the second straight start.

Rondon gave up 6 runs in the 4th en route to allowing 7ER over 3.2IP.

Jim Deters gave up the other 2 runs over 3.2IP.

Just 5 hits for the Indians..... Beau Mills (.400) was 1-for-2 with 2BB (5:5 K:BB ratio so far this year) and also made his 2nd error.

Kinston Opinion:

Tribe fans, I had the pleasure of watching both Saturday's game and Sunday's game. On the positive side, my two oldest kids sang the National Anthem before today's game as part of the Prince William County school day with 100s of other kids. I also caught a foul ball today and will put on my boy's collection of crap he has in his room. It was his first game today watching any Indians team.

I was really depressed after watching the two games. I watched batting practice both days and apologize for missing some good photo opportunities, but I had to take my 1.5 year old boy with me, so I left the camera behind.

I think we have four solid guys on the Kinston offensive roster:
1B/3B Mills
SS Rivero
2B Goedert
OF Drennen

They all looked really solid in practice and during the games.

I hope to watch some more High A games this season, and see how some of our young arms do.
