What did you think of The Who at halftime?

New postby OldDawg » Sun Feb 07, 2010 11:41 pm

Of course I realize how old they are now, but it still sets you back a little when you see them on stage now.
However, I thought they "looked" better than when they rolled the Stones out at halftime of the superbowl a while back.

I am such a Who fan from years back, so maybe I am prejudiced. I enjoyed the halftime show.
Their voices had a hard time kicking it out like in the old days.
I was impressed that he could kick out the "Yaaaaaaaaeeeeeaaahhhh!!" towards the end of "Won't get fooled again," which is the song's trademark.
I liked how they organized the songs essentially into a non-stop show featuring some of their most famous work.
I have to admit, I was disappointed when it was over, because I would have liked to have watched and listened a little longer from a nostalgic point of view.

I wish they wouldn't have done it. I found it depressing. I appreciate the effort and the energy but it literally depressed me. Thought the game was far better than the halftime act and the commercials this year.

Pretty sure I saw them this morning eating brunch with my grandmother at the retirement home.

I guess I was a little depressed as well. Dang, they are looking old. And their voices were struggling. I have always enjoyed their music so much, I guess I was looking/listening through rose-colored glasses/hearing aids. Heck, they are probably the reason I need hearing aids!!!

In your opinions, which performance was better/worse? This Who performance, or The Rolling Stones? I have never been a Stones fan, so its easy for me.

How/who do you figure selects the half-time performers, and why the Who??

See, this is where your hatred for all things "old" distorts your perception.

The entire show was extremely lame, except Townsend is still a showman, and can still play. The rest was painful, I agree. Rodger Daltrey looked (and sang) like a corpse, the drummer looked like our pizza delivery kid, but Pete still rocks.

They really need to bring in someone younger and a little more energetic next year. They don't need to be all that- Christ, Rob Thomas would do. The '60s are OVER.

Sadly U2 post 9/11 had the best SB half-time show in the last many years.

And JT's nipplegate means we are just going to keep on getting old fucks that are PC.

+2 on all comments.. I found it funny they opened with a song more than half of America probably didnt know. All america knows them for anymore is the songs used in the CSI shows. I envisioned a lot of people asking "Who the hell is this" until Teenage Wasteland started.

Without that psychopath Keith Moon they aint much live.

My favourite story about moon is him driving a rental car drunk and craqshing it through a hotel lobby and then asking for his room key

I still think Prince was the best that the SB has had recently. I was really hoping that Townsend was going to take his guitar and start thrashing the stage at the end...but I guess not. A little disappointed there. Also, I really thought we were going to see a shot of David Caruso investigating a homicide while "We Won't Get Fooled Again" was playing. Ya know, Miami and all.

Caught the first 5-6 songs in the medley. The performance was up to par for the event, they put out exactly as planned. They just don't matter any more in modern music, that's what's sad for many. Yes, the mattered A LOT 20 err- 45 years ago. I'll just consider this a pop culture victory lap from half of the band.

I know Keith Moon is the beloved rock-n-rolla of choice to miss from The Who, but can I just take a two seconds to say: "John Entwhistle"? The guy was a g-d stud on the bass. RIP. The Eminence Front open is so thick.

The generation that is currently screwing up the country.

Christ, had to deal with one of the a-hole hippies bitching out of my friends, handing them a pamphlet about some conspiracy based bullshit, when we had a college visit at Kent on the anniversery of the shootings. :gah:.

Peace and love my ass.

Also, Halftime shows are overrated and serve really no purpose. Who the hell are you trying to attract with these? are there really people out there going "You know, I wasn't going to watch this Super Bowl thing, but now that Supertramp is playing, I'm there!". Seriously, my biggest pet peeve in all of football. STOP TRYING TO ENCOPORATE MUSIC INTO THE BROADCASTS. I don't want to hear some lame ass country band like "Rascal Flats" or whomever the hell they call them, whine and moan about their damn moonshine while I'm trying to watch the Buckeyes play Penn State on Saturday nights in the fall.

To answer the topic of the thread. Sadly, I thought it was pretty bad bordering on embarrasing.

This is off topic but I don't think it warrants a new thread. I think the problem with music in general is that there is a 10 or 15 year "deadspot" in music. The 80's and 90's artists have not really had much staying power due to the fragmentation of popular music world. at some point country/rap/hip hop/hair metal/grunge/boy bands/brittany spears all became popular and could be found on the top 40 charts at once. if you look a the inductees into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame since 2005 only Madonna/Metallica/Run DMC have been voted in that are 80's acts. Perhaps it is still a bit early since the 80's acts would have just been eligible in 2005.

Nothing seems to be takng hold that can appeal to a wide audience from teens to older boomers. the only acts that i can see making a bridge between the younger and older viewers might be the grunge acts since they were just a re-energized version of classic rock. however they are still not considered "safe" enough so i think we are going to be stuck with making the old boomers happy or the 20-30 year olds happy.

maybe we are going through a transition like the change from the early 50's doo wop era to the mid 60's rock emergence.

that is my take but i am a boomer and obviously have an older bias.

To your point on fragmentation, if the SuperBowl continues to roll out music acts for half-time they'll get to the point of mashing up different artists in the 20 minute set. You'll see 4-5 groups representing different fragments on for 3-4 song medleys each, only to come together for a woeful send up of Start Me Up, with Mick being wheeled out to make a pouty face. Now that's entertainment, SuperBowl style!

We know this- they're going to keep it ultra-safe for viewers. It's sad to think a nipple (which everyone has two of, max. three) could make an advanced society like ours sh*t it's collective pants into trotting out a impotent entertainment. Uhg.

had to youtube this up.

Super Bowl 16, a meeting of Paul Browns two proteges, Bill Walsh and Joe Montana's first Super Bowl and a goal line stand wins the game for the 'Niners, and THIS is the Halftime show!? (and I know I didn't watch this in person, but the NFL films is one of my favorites, hence why I have some what of an idea of the significance of the game..). It looks gayer than a Clay Aiken concert on Logo.

Hell, these guys did their farewell tour in 1982 - 28 years ago. I considered them old when I was in high school in the '70s. Besides, without Keith Moon and John Entwistle, it's just half of The Who with some backing musicians. I think the drummer was Zack Starkey, Ringo Starr's son, who was Keith Moon's godchild.

IIRC, next year I think the Super Bowl is in Texas. Maybe we can at least get some good looking female country singers. Shania Twain and Faith Hill would be a good start.

I think the Rock and Roll oldtimers games are over, based on the reviews of The Who minus their rhythm section. I think the NFL will go to the other extreme and we'll see the tween bands. Look to get a buffet of Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, etc, for the next few years. Unless of course Jerruh demands that an all Texas review be represented in the his new crib. Which could be very bad (Jessica and Ashley Simpson, Vanilla Ice) or mediocre(Meatloaf, LeeAnne Rimes, Willie Nelson).

Roger will probably have a Mandrell sisters reunion

Seems like the best Artists from Texas are already gone. (Buddy Holly, SRV, Dimebag, Boxcar Willie, LeadBelly)

Would have made my life to see Pantera rip up a SB halftime show.

After a little bit I muted it and watched the cool lighting, lol. And I love a lot of their songs. They just sounded BAD and looked worse.

Gotta admit the lighting was awesome though. Too bad the rest of the show ruined it. The crowd seemed into it though. They were singing along like crazy.

I was actually at the game and I am quite surprised by all the negative talk about the Who. Although it could have been the 15 beers and the lasers I was paying attention to...but I enjoyed it and I am not a who fan in general.

You didn't need to watch the halftime show to hear The Who. Just watch any of the myriad of CSI: Zanesville commercials and you'll hear some song by The Who in the background.

I had a feeling it might have been a lot better in person. In my opinion the Halftime shows NEVER translate well from the field to the TV audience.

Mark it, dudes.

I'm gonna say John Cougar or Bon Jovi at some point soon. In Dallas, Indy and New Orleans over the next three years you might see a Kenny Chesney too.

Late to the party, but my money is on a Weekend at Bernie's Doors reunion.

Can we archive / library this? It is so choice for the Up With People take alone.
