What you think?

Be careful, I don't think Great Lakes beer is pastuerized, thats why it isn't shipped around the country. Not to mention the self control that would take, I drank mine away by early Janurary

So it was cold and rainy yesterday here and I broke out the sweatshirt this morning and this was my first thought... do I really have to wait until the middle of Oct to get this?? I would assume since the thread said that last year it would be released at the same time this year.... but I need it noooooow!
In the end, we're all "only for a limited time," you guys.

$11 a six this year. Ouch.

That's $22 a week and $100 a month for the next three months.

And worth every GD penny.

Was at Kenilworth Tavern this evening after softball, asked for a Christmas Ale. To my surprise, it came served with a healthy dose of cinnamon on top... GENIUS! GLORIOUS! AMAZING! I'll stop there, because I could go on all night.

Thus, I'm either asking for the cinnamon treatment wherever I imbibe for the next couple months, or carrying cinnamon with me.

Bricco in Akron has Christmas ale now! This was my first stop of the day for work and this was all I could think about. A few of my other accounts have placed their orders early to make sure they get some.

Went to Giant Eagle today to get some stuff. Thought I'd take a peek in the coolers to see if there was any Christmas Ale. Sure enough, there was. However, it was $12 for a 6-pack. I refuse to pay $2 for a beer if I'm going to be drinking anywhere where there isn't live music, a 50-inch screen TV, or live professional athletes entertaining me. I bought the Sam Adams Winter Classics 12-pack which was $13.

If the price comes down, I'll give it a shot.

You got it backwards.

All this means is you buy the beer and upgrade your man-cave to acceptable standards.

Best I could find out here is Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale from Anderson Valley Brewing Co. in Cali. I was hoping some of these micro-places did the copy-cat thing. This is real good, better than the Sam Adams Winter Lager.

Well my wife was out grabbing t-giving stuff and asked if I needed anything I told her to get another 6 of that Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale. She said it was the last pack, so maybe the Swerbies, or TCFs are onto something. Best beer I've ever had so I need to get back up there on holiday again. Damn I was home for the 20th class reunion this time last year, and drank like a fish, I'd have loved trying the Great Lakes, (assuming it's sold around Warren.)

Totally off-topic but having the reunion on Thanksgiving weekend was a great idea (for those of you who have to plan that stuff).

Outstanding effort.

The Walmart out here had a full wall of it yesterday. There is a half a wall today.

I had two at poker Thursday and actually won a tourney for the first time all season. Coincidence? I think not.

Just scored some dirt cheap tickets to fly back on X-mas day returning on the 1st (people don't like to fly those days), $988.00 for 4 tickets taxes and all.

My old man said "do you need anything" I said get me a couple 6-packs of GL Christmas Ale. In honor of the TCFers.

Well got back into town and man was it good. Dad had two six-packs waiting, and after finishing one the first night, I promptly bought a case before it sold out. The walk-in cooler at Giant Eagle Austintown still had some. That left me with 5 six-packs for the rest of the week (6 bottles seem like plenty each night).

First case of the winter purchased. First Christmas Ale of the year in my belly. Life is good.

I buy a case every Saturday at Heinens though the end of the supply. An expensive habit ... but what the hell else you gonna do on the north coast in the winter?

This morning at Acme #1 I saw someone wheeling out a cart with 4 six-packs of GL Christmas Ale, and knew this was the time to finally pop my cherry regarding it. I bought 2 six-packs ($11.99 each this year) and can't wait to find out about all the fuss. Should be the best $24 I've ever spent. The Acme I mentioned had a pallet of Xmas Ale, with a "8 six-packs per customer" limitation, so I'm thinking it will be gone by tomorrow evening.

The Acme I mentioned had a pallet of Xmas Ale, with a "8 six-packs per customer" limitation, so I'm thinking it will be gone by tomorrow evening.

Article below explains the price increase (up $1 per 6-pack from last year). If you don't want to shell out the $$$, which I don't because GLBC XA has gone downhill since 2007, Corsendonk Xmas, Southern Tier Old Man, Troegs Mad Elf, Alesmith Yuletide, New Belgium 2 Below, Delerium Noel, Gouden Carolus Christmas, Scaldis Noel, and Brasserie Caracole Nostradamus are all great alternatives. Thirsty Dog makes the list this year as well. Had a fresh pint last week and its VERY close to the old GLBC XA in terms of flavor and ABV.

Every year they up production quality goes down. Its a damn shame the brand couldn't handle its own popularity.

Rick - I'm curious what your favorite xmas ale is?

Just picked up a case 2 hours ago at the brewery. This batch tastes pretty good. I would love to go back in time to taste an olde Great Lakes Christmas ale. I wonder if its much different, or if it only tastes better in people's druken memories.

I think one problem with christmas ale, with all the honey and spices, is that it doesn't age well and it needs to be kept cold. So there is a huge difference between drinking one fresh from the brewery, and drinking one at the end of december from a store that has let it warm, and cool and warm and cool.

I don't claim to have the distinguished pallat of the esteemed Mr. RNE. But, I thought last year's Christmas Ale was pretty damn good. Better than it's been in years.

Last year I ended up with 6 cases purchased. After hearing in this thread about the price hike I was initially a little leary. That is until I realized that if I got another 6 cases this year it would cost me a grand total of $24 bucks extra, which is pretty much one round if you're out with 3 buddies. I can swing it.

That being said, I've made it my mission this year to locate some 'Donk.

Replying to a few of you who posted...........

Greatgoo: It used to be GLBC XA until a few years back. Now, I'm hoping its this 2 year old bottle of Corsendonk which I plan on opening X-mas eve. I had a 1.5 year bottle of Corsendonk back in June and it was crazy smooth and much less dry than then a fresh bottle. Overall, I'd say GLBC is still in the top 5, but my favorites are Corsendonk and WBC Wenceslas. Some of the Belgian ones are great, but are more closely related to Belgian strong dark ales than typical "winter warmers." Whole different level of complexity, though don't assume that to mean better.

Commodore Perry: Its absolutely different. ABV has fluctuated every year since 2006 and I can say with experience and discussions with the brewers during one X-mas in July that 2007 was the most flavored and highest ABV they ever distributed. During Xmas in July in 2009, it was rumored one of the batches they made was somewhere between 11%-13%. For the record, GLBC, like most other beers, can age just fine if the ABV is at or above 6.5%. If you buy it from the store, you can age it (even in the fridge) as long as you leave it in a constant temp. Please see my post regarding aging beers towards the bottom of this thread:

Mother: Agreed, last year was not bad at all. I think they toned down how much the ABV came through and upped the amount of "sweets" used (more honey and cinnamon, less nutmeg, ginger and hops). This is merely based on my tastes with nothing official from GLBC. Mother, if you're an east-sider, I guarantee Save-On at the corner of Rt 20&306 will have it or World Of Wines in front of the Mentor Heinens. Most Heinens should carry it as we get into December.

Not that anyone cares, but I've finally started putting together my beer list showing every beer I've had or at least committed to memory. So far I'm up to 600 with a lot more US brewers to go and I haven't touched Canada or Europe. I guestimated a while back I've had well over 1000 different beers but it will be close as I finalize my US list.
