*Gulp* Santana to try third base

Unread postby British_Pharaoh » Sat Nov 30, 2013 6:52 pm

Carlos Santana of the Indians would like to play in the field more, but the Indians already have good options at catcher in Yan Gomes and at first base in Nick Swisher. Instead, then, Santana would like to try third base, and Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that the Indians are interested in the possibility, in part because Santana is taking initiative rather than complaining. (He's working out at third at the Indians' Dominican facility.) Whether Santana can field at third base is an open question -- he hasn't played more than a handful of games at the position since 2006, when he was in the Dodgers' minor-league system. If the Indians have any confidence he can play there, though, they might be less inclined to pursue a righty-hitting third-base type this offseason. Lefty-hitting Lonnie Chisenhall, who struggled last season, currently sits atop the Indians' depth chart at third.

Catcher...now third. They gotta try to find him a position where you don't have to pay much attention. Guys gonna get hit with a line drive cause he's gazing at something in the stands.

The good news is that even though this is the stone cold truth, they lose next to nothing defensively playing Santana at 3B over Chisenhall.

So there's that. ;-) ;)

Hopefully he kept all his gear from his catching days, mask, helmet & chest protector because if he's gonna play 3rd I think he's going to need them.

Who knows maybe he'll be good. I've seen stranger things happen in the game... I also thought the same thing when Fausto had the opportunity to become the Tribe's Closer during the dog days of summer in August 2006. We all know how smoothly that went.

I'm all for this idea as long as Santana is (and by most accounts he volunteered). If he feels it is difficult to keep his head in the game playing DH and his offense suffers. Let's get creative.

He won't be gold glove, but the offensive improvement will more than make-up for any defensive loses.

I just worry about his effort. The guy can't even be bothered (when he's already on his haunches) to get in front of a ball and block it, instead electing to stick his back hand out.

A lot of cuts, relays and situational baseball at the hot corner. And if you misplay them, it's a run.

This could work out about as well as Eric Wedge's grand plan to make Ryan Garko a left fielder.
Bottom 4th: Cleveland
- J. Kipnis grounded out to shortstop
- A. Cabrera doubled to deep left
- N. Swisher doubled to center, A. Cabrera scored
- J. Giambi doubled to deep right center, N. Swisher to third, N. Swisher out at home
- J. Giambi caught stealing, catcher to third

He came up as a 3B. And 3B is a helluva lot easier than catcher. I don't think it's being considered as a full-time switch, just a way to get his bat in the lineup at a position of need.

It's not ideal, but comparing it to Garko (a catcher turned 1B turned LF) is a little much. It's not like he's never played the position before.

Pablo Sandoval can get around reasonably well at 3B and he only played 105 games there in the minors. Also played C and 1B. Sure, he's a bit below average over there, but to get his bat in the lineup, it's a necessity.

Traditional defensive stats show that Santana was a bad 3B in the minors (.887 FPCT, 10 E in 150 chances), but the 1B are not nearly as sound defensively in the minors. So, he may have actually been that bad, but we don't know for sure.

I'll say this: The best thing about this is Santana showing initiative.

My underlying issue is exactly what EW mentioned. Fielding and throwing are one thing. Remembering your responsibilities is another.

I'd like to see the Indians really play around with this in Spring Training, where the sun-baked infields can get pretty fast. At the same time, I don't want Santana hurt because of this experiment.

Carlos Santana cannot catch baseballs behind the plate. He also cannot catch baseballs at first base. I don't know how a move to third base can result in anything other than a complete disaster.

So lets just say that Santana becomes a below average, but acceptable third basemen.

What's the gameplan then?

You give Chisenhall 3B to start the season. Let Santana get a few starts in at 3B to acclimate him to the position and spell Chisenhall.

If Chisenhall can hold his own, then you have a full time DH that can also play C,1B and 3B. That's not a bad outcome.

If Chisenhall is a bust, then Santana fills a gaping hole at 3B, and they might be able to trade for a big bat for DH at the deadline.

You pick your spots with Santana. A pretty sharp baseball dude, Steve Kinsella at Wahoo's On First, wrote this article up last month: http://wahoosonfirst.com/2014/01/07/car ... d-indians/

He looked at batted ball data for Masterson and Kluber and deduced that you could minimize Santana's exposure with those two on the mound because the opposition loads up with left handed bats and most of the ground balls are pulled. So that's an option.

Francona and Antonetti are big on platoon advantages, so that will factor in to their decision. Chisenhall can't hit southpaws, so Santana could play over there against LHP.

It'll be interesting. If he can be good enough to not kill you over there, it adds another dimension of versatility to the club.
