About letting kids skip college and go directly to the pros.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story ... ll-changes

In some sense, is this commercially viable? Could you see the NFL teams drafting the top 50 high schoolers into a minor league, with the kids having the option to take the money or go to college (like the MLB draft goes today)? Would there be a separate NFL draft for the minor leagues and colleges?

Basketball's a little more cut-and-dried, since an 18-year-old can have good success there. However, they should be able to turn down the offer, or if they head to college, be stuck there for 3 years.

Thoughts?

I don't think the NFL is going to start a D league, and the NCAA does not have any leverage to make them. I don't think NFL GMs are going to draft guys right out of HS either, although maybe someone would have used a 3rd rounder for Clowney.
Coming from a Wolverine, we're the football equivalent of a formerly abused wife of a meth addict who just remarried the safe nice guy. We're just glad we have someone who's aware that it's a rivalry and that tackling on defense is integral. Baby steps.

Delany acting like there is a legitimate 2nd option for these guys, like minor league baseball, or Europe for basketball players who really just don't want to go to school for a year is ridiculous.

And the NCAA doesn't have to act like paying these guys $50,000 is the only thing on the table. If you just let the players capitalize on their owns names/likeness/auto...that would be a huge start.

But stop with the "because that's the way we've always done it" as a legit reason for ANYTHING.

I'm slowly changing my opinion of paying student athletes. I'm very much down with the argument that if we deem 18 yr olds as adults, and put the said responsibility on them, AND say they can go to war, then by all means allow them the choice/opportunity to earn a living in via these various ways related to their status/likeness etc.

My concerns are whether the money is public or private.

So if the NFL wants to draft the 18 yo or draft his rights etc, then so be it. IMO only a few rare kids could play at that level at that age with some success. AP being one, maybe maybe a Clowney.

But I also respect these league's rights to set their own rules and CBAs etc, and if they deem certain rules restricting student athletes from entering the league then so be it. People aren't getting hired into certain fields or by certain employers without specific credentials so I see little difference, in respect to free markets and private enterprise.

Only if He held single game passing records for TD's.

I know that after 2 years Miller doesn't and with his accuracy he never will.

But, yeah, let's put Thomas Lott on a passing pedestal when the offense without him is running like a clock and Meyer's passing game never looked better.

How do we know Miller's accuracy right now?

Hey just like McDonald's I'm luv it with Kenny G right now. BUT, who is he looking accurate against, how many times has he had to go to his second or third read etc etc etc? We really haven't seen 2013 Miller yet this year.

Settle yourself down a bit JB.

I saw him vs Beffahaw. His TD pass to Devin was a joke. It was west side CYO stuff.

Same ole Brax. One read and run. Great player in that role but now the O has playmakers. He doesn't look down field to use them.

But yeah, in year 3 the bulb will go off.

Tons of relevance in that game Brax played as a true Freshman with Bollman as an OC and a video coordinator as his QB Coach.

Tons of data to support your claim there....

His first year with real coaching and two healthy quarters where he completed 70% of his passes has you sold because Kenny G has been hitting his first read a lot.

Yep, no way he is better this year, nope! We know it:

"I'm a lot better, I know what's going on," Miller said. "I know what's going on from the left side to the right side. I know what the offensive line is doing, I know what the farthest receiver on the opposite side is doing. I know what type of coverage that they like to line up in. They can't bait me any more. Last year, I was second-guessing myself. It's just little tips like that."

Urban says Kenny has improved as a passer from last year, he's never said a peep about Braxton except that he is much better too.

You should wait and watch Braxton, I don't know, play a full game rather than running around posting about Kenny G's exploits of teams that were literally the worst four game stretch of defenses anyone in D1 played.

Not gonna soil the thread meant entirely for something else by letting you bait me into saying only an idiot couldn't see Weeden's NFL future. It would be clearly true, but this thread is about drafting high school kids into the NFL.

Never gonna happen and this is just Delany trolling about how kids profit off of his university so he shouldn't ever have to pay them.

Of course, who cares about the Bajillion dollars OSU makes off the kids since 4 out of every 200 makes big NFL bucks!

Delany is being a troll, not much to discuss. This would be like starting a thread every time Gee said something ridiculous.

Love that take, and that is the position I have always supported. Scholarships should be for amateurs. Professionals should pay. If you want to be a pro and hire an agent, sell your autograph and get money from boosters... then declare yourself as such and take out some student loans, pell grants, etc... like the rest of the world. In the end, the school should be limited to a number of roster spots at 105 and pros should be treated as walkons. The number of roster spots should be limited not the number of scholarships. That said, if athletes are found to take illegal benefits then their scholarships should be revoked, immediately. If they can't pay the bill then they shouldn't play.

JB,

I hate watching the ball go flying over a slot receiver's head at 120MPH or hit him in the feet as much as you do, but at this point we really don't know what we have in Miller.

I agree that the light will not suddenly come on for a kid in year 3, but in Miller's defense this is really his second year of real coaching; this is when you expect the biggest "leap." If we see the same shit throws out of Miller in the next few games that we saw last year then I am with you, but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for a couple of games.

He was basically a RB for Middletown that took direct snaps; he received 0 coaching on throwing the ball. Then he played in Jim Bollman's offense that is making four different QBs look retarded for MSU over the last 2 years; his coach was a glorified video coordinator, Tressel crony. Last year was his first year of coaching, for all intents and purposes, he is a sophomore this year. I am not ready to pull the plug, nor am I willing to concede that Guiton is the better QB. Guiton has a noodle for an arm and is severely limited in the routes he can throw. Miller has the arm strength to make all the throws. Give him a shot.

Na. No way. I saw Brax play for Huber Heights Wayne and he was nasty as a passer. The stuff he did for Wayne vs Eds in a blizzard via the air was amazing. His receivers cost him the game.

He just hasn't made the jump.

LOL, he got outplayed by a 5'8" cracka, please.

But seriously, if you can't see the improvements he's made since day one at tOSU then you should return your HS diploma.

I think we may be seeing the jump now. He did look pretty decent in my rewatch of the Wisco game. Definitely some very accurate passes in there. I definitely think he held the ball too long on occasions, and he still struggles on read option plays, but he made some great throws.

Double posts are annoying.
