21/5/13 Indians vs Tigers Win One For the Proud Parents

Unread postby British_Pharaoh » Tue May 21, 2013 6:03 pm

There's a new baby Swisher in the world so let's christen the child with a win against our division foe

CLE: Kluber 3-2, 5.40ERA
DET: Scherzer 5-0, 3.98ERA

Tigers

Dirks, CF
Hunter, RF
Cabrera, 3B
Fielder, 1B
Martinez, DH
Peralta, SS
Tuiasosopo, LF
Avila, C
Infante, 2B

Indians

Bourn, CF
Kipnis, 2B
Cabrera, SS
Brantley, LF
Santana, C
Reynolds, 1B
Giambi, DH
Aviles, 3B
Stubbs, RF

Despite the last time we faced Scherzer we do have a decent history against him. He is 6-4 with an ERA over 5 against the Indians in his career.

It's all down to how well Kluber does tonight facing these guys for the 2nd time in 11 days...... last time was terrible, so let's hope for something at least verging on solid from him tonight.

I'm hoping for a clutch pinch hit from Gomes, just 'cause I have a man-crush on Gomes

Does anyone else hear that great heckler on the STO broadcast?
"Hey Alex, do you know you have the worst batting average on your team?"
He then clearly said something to Dirks but i cant decipher it with the crowd noise. People seem to be yuking it up. :lmfao:

Heard him call Victor a bum about 2 seconds before he nearly pierced Kluber's ear.

It sucks that Kluber gave up 3 in the 6th, but it's hard to complain about his outing as a whole.

Just need the bats to gets something going against Scherzer.

At this point we've just got to hope that pitch count will force Scherzer out of the game and we can try and rally against Valverde.

I have a feeling though that Leyland is gonna try and push him the distance though - even if it does mean throwing 130+ pitches.

Huff doing his best to blow any chance of a comeback.

No real clue what he's doing in a close game though.

Huff cost us any chance at a comeback

Because the guy behind him doesn't exactly blow.

I hated that they walked him in the 9th. Go at him. Albers on the mound. If you don't intend to bring in Hill to face Fielder, then you pitch to Miggy. It's already a 4-1 game. He's still making outs 55% of the time. Go at him.

Don't care what kind of night Fielder had. Lefties have an OBP that's 30 points higher off of Albers in his career. Higher slugging. Plus, he has control issues and could walk in a run.

Disagreed with some of what Francona did tonight, but May 21 is not a do-or-die game. Save the pen for tomorrow when you're going to need them again. No off day until June 6. Gotta be smart.

And it was the way he sucked, with no real fire or energy, just looking clueless.

Got lasik done, and blamed his vision, and still sucked.

Fans were really patient with him, which is kind of surprising in retrospect since he replaced a Cleveland icon.

Although, food for thought: What must Seattle be thinking about Asdrubal Cabrera, who the Mariners basically handed to us for free?

They're probably over it and have been for a while.

I remember reading something from one of the Mariners guys who writes for Fangraphs or SB Nation or something now where they liked the Perez for Cabrera deal because Perez gave them a veteran bat and that Cabrera projected as a good fielder with no bat. Plus, there was something about the depth they had at SS at the time.

I'll try to track down a link.

Am I correct though that when those deals were made in '06, Seattle was on the fringe of contention at best? I think they were like a .500 team, and Perez was only on a one year deal with us when it happened. Pretty remarkable that they were able to get that kind of return for Perez and Broussard under those circumstances.

June 30: The day they traded us AC, they were 41-40 and 2 GB.

July 26: The day they traded us Choo, they were 49-52 and 4 GB.

They finished 15 games back at 78-84.

Disagree but it's not a huge gap either way IMO.

They can both be lazy and sullen and their play suffers when they're in that funk.

When engaged AsCab is better defensively, more range, more capable of turning hits to outs. When they're both engaged each can carry for you a week offensively. Peralta w/more power overall and AsCab from both sides of plate and with line to line base hits and occasional pop.

If I was completely unbiased and choosing one or other for my team I'd take AsCab because of the defense and switch hitting.

Just a personal, "eyeball" measuring stick there.

It's amazing how close these two really are since 2008, when Cabrera became the everyday starter. Peralta leads 14.8 to 11.9 in WAR, almost completely because he rates as a better fielder. By far.

Slash lines:

Peralta: .266/.324/.423 ; For saber stats: .326 wOBA, 100 wRC+ (league average = 100)
Cabrera: .276/.338/.415 ; For saber stats: .332 wOBA, 106 wRC+

Plate discipline:

Peralta: 18.4% K%, 7.9% BB%
Cabrera: 16.8% K%, 7.7% BB%

Batted ball (Line drive, ground ball, fly ball):

Peralta: 20.9%, 41.2%, 37.9%
Cabrera: 20.5%, 45.2%, 34.4%

By saber stats, Cabrera is a better offensive player over that time. But, Peralta is a superior fielder, which is hard to comprehend.

It's pretty amazing how close they really are.

Peralta doesn't look like the flashy defender cause his range is average. What makes him good is the laser beam he has for an arm. When Reynolds was out by a foot and the ump called him safe it was because the ump couldn't believe a guy could throw the ball that hard for that distance that accurately.
