Excellent sequence to Mauer.

Fantastic job by Rich Hill. If Hill reads TCF, my apologies for doubting him. :hide:

Win it right now.

Selfish AB from Santana. Some good pitches from Fien, but the swing was wayyyyyyyyyy too long.

This is plausible. And will likely be what Tito tells the media.

That's becoming my guess. Would have no idea why, unless he aggravated something throwing a bullpen.

That'll work. Now you can force Carrera to bunt. Though I'd contemplate a hit & run. Decent bat control.

No harm, no foul now on using Allen. Curious to see what Francona has to say.

Now I have to think of something famous about Minnesota tomorrow for the next game thread. A problem I'll happily tackle.

Nice win. Nice streak.

Awesome win. But Masterson frustrates the hell out of me. He gives up one run when he hits a batter and another when he lets Morneau get to 2nd base on a wild pitch, which means they can't shift like they want against Doumit, who dribbles a weak ground ball into left field to give the Twins a run and prolong the inning.

He also struck out a guy who got to first when Gomes couldn't flag down the pitch because it was on the wrong side of the plate from where it was supposed to be. Masterson was all over the place.

Great to see Kipnis hit a triple over the center fielder's head off a lefty. Lefties have been killing him this year. Then he bunted for a hit and an RBI against a matchup lefty.

Worst offensive game I've seen from Droobs in a long time. Twice he failed to get the runner home from third with less than two out, then with two on he hacks at the first pitch (as usual), a fastball well out of the zone, and pops out to end the inning. If I'm Francona I'm giving him the take sign for the first pitch of every at-bat, at least for a while.

I can't believe Perez got through the 10th without giving the Twins the lead. He's always guaranteed to screw up in non-save situations. Maybe this year will be different.

In the end Stubbs bailed everybody out. A different hero every night.

Did anybody ask Francona about the use of Allen in the post-game presser?

I caught the Radio presser afterwards and all I heard was someone ask why he went to Allen and his reply was (I papaphrase); "We could've gone to Hill who would've faced Willingham or Allen to face Parmalee, so we went with Allen".

No mention of Smith.

Someone later asked him if Smith was available (or something to that effect - it's hard to hear the Questions on the Radio feed) and he said "We were going to use him in the 10th if we didn't score" (he obviously meant the 11th).

Crack reporting by the Cleveland media it would seem.

Allen was brought in with a runner on first and two out. Parmalee was up, not Mauer or Morneau. Allen should have been able to get out of the inning with no further damage. He's been pitching very well lately.

My guess is that Francona wanted to save Smith for more of a pressure situation if it came up later in the game, like Willingham pinch hitting with runners on.

Smith has not given up a run in his last 18 appearances, by the way. I wonder if any other reliever in the majors has a longer streak.

What "later in the game" situation was there going to be?

It was the 7th inning.... that innings Smith's, the 8th is Pestano's and the 9th for Perez. Those guys come in when they normally come in and do their jobs, then there's no high pressure situation later in the game.

If Pestano and Perez are healthy, we get out of the 7th inning with the lead, then Smith isn't coming into the game ahead of Pestano/Perez, so you're saving him for nothing.

Like I said last night, the only legit excuse is one of the big 3 wasn't available - Perez pitched in the 10th, Smith was warming for the 11th, so maybe Pestano has the flu or something - and because of that Francona was holding Smith back to pitch the 8th.

Even if that was the case I would've used Smith for the 4-out hold.

And, to your point of Allen should've got out of it, well yeah he should. But, that doesn't remove Francona from any blame or questions.

Saw in my timeline that Pestano dealing with sore elbow. Unavailable again today. Partially explains Allen, but you could have used Smith for the four out hold. I still believe it was a test for Allen and he failed it.

Pestano has only thrown one inning in the last 12 days and he has a sore arm? Uh-oh.
