Fertilizer Plant Explosion

Unread postby skatingtripods » Wed Apr 17, 2013 11:59 pm

A fertilizer plant in West, Texas caught on fire and subsequently exploded. Everything in and around the plant is in shambles. At least 60-70 reported dead, probably more, and hundreds injured.

Christ, what a horrible week.

James Decker ‏@jamesdecker2006 25m
Just to put the devastation into perspective: 60-70 dead in a town the size of West is the equivalent of 200,000+ dead in New York City.

They've corrected early reports of 60-70 dead down to 15. Either way, a sad situation in a small town where everybody probably knows everybody.

Jesus. That scared the shit out of me. Thought it was a minute of the plant burning.

I can't believe they survived that. Has anyone ever seen the footage of that rocket plant that blew up years ago? The shockwave was insane.

USGS says the blast registered a 2.1 on the Richter scale.

To put that into perspective, the last North Korean nuclear test was only 4.9.

From what I have seen on firefighter sites is it started as a fertilizer plant fire, and firefighters were putting it out. They got water on ammonuim nitrate, which set off the explosion.

When I went to bed last night there were 10 firefighters, 2 EMS workers, and 1 police officer are among the fatalities. It leveled all houses in the area, a nursing home collapsed with people trapped inside, and a school was on fire.

Woke up this morning and all that's on the news is the POTUS landing at a memorial in Boston. Not to talk down the incident in Boston, but I guess that draws more ratings than actual news.

Man....that just sounds like a huge oversight. Talked to a few firefighter friends and they were surprised they wouldn't let the fire burn knowing how many dangerous chemicals would be in a fertilizer plant. Its truly unfortunately, but I can't help but think this should have been prevented.

Yeah, there's no way the number of fatalities is only 15. There's a whole lot of rubble they have yet to look through and I'd wager to say that they will find some bodies in there.

It was ALL over CNN/msnbc last night. So they were covering it like crazy when there was something to report. There's not a lot to report or show right now so they can't really cover it like they were in the wee hours this morning.

It is a logarithmic scale.

Also, it's the MMS scale. Journalists just say Ricther because they are stupid.

Reading about that on-line, I cannot for the life of me imagine that fewer than 20 people were killed.

The articles say a 50-unit apartment building was peeled basically clean leaving only the skeleton of the building standing. How is that survivable unless it was empty to start?

That video coz posted above is unbelievable. Those people seemed to be a good distance away and they were completely rocked.

Not sure many "bodies" will be found. They'll just have to assume people are dead when they're unaccounted for. Not going to be a lot of closure for some of those families I don't think.

Yeah, after seeing that video it's hard to believe that anyone remotely close to that place could still be alive.

I had read earlier that it was the water on the fertilizer that set the whole thing off, and I was surprised that there wasn't a single person there going bat-shit crazy telling them to turn off the damn hoses. Especially considering the size of the fire. I'm not an expert but that looked pretty damn uncontainable. Turning on a few fire hoses would do as much good as pissing on a bonfire.

Christ, what a tragedy.

It's why I always keep an empty refrigerator in my back yard. If it looks like an explosion is imminent (nucular or otherwise) ill just crawl inside ala Indiana Jones and everything will be A-OK. :thumb up:
