Opening Day Roster

Unread postby dazindiansfanuk » Mon Mar 25, 2013 5:18 pm

Looks like the Tribe have finalised a lot today based on a slew of Bastian tweets: -

Jordan Bastian ‏@MLBastian 7m
Hagadone and Shaw informed they will be in Opening Day bullpen.

Jordan Bastian ‏@MLBastian 7m
Herrmann placed on 60-day DL to clear room for Giambi on 40-man roster.

Jordan Bastian ‏@MLBastian 7m
Raburn told he will be on roster. Phelps and Gomes optioned to AAA.

Jordan Bastian ‏@MLBastian 7m
Giambi had contract purchased, but placed on DL (back strain) and eligible to be activated on 4/9.

Jordan Bastian ‏@MLBastian 8m
LHP Scott Kazmir is 5th starter, but won't be added to roster until April 6. Carrasco on roster 1st six days to serve leftover suspension.

Shakes down pretty much as anticipated. Nifty move placing Giambi on the *cough* DL so that little CC can serve out his suspension. If I was Detroit or any other team I might be placing a call to MLB HQ to see how the hell we get away with that. And I'm sure this burns one of his options (lesson to other young players - throw at the other guys head and the team will have to burn one of your options.)

I guess Zeke and Huff are history. Huff is whatever, a guy who will pitch in the bigs for some time but not amount to much. But I think Zeke is a useful 4th outfielder and am a little bummed to see him go. I hope Stubbs makes it worth it.

/oh...and Daz...I sent you a PM asking you a ?

Yeah, looks like it's confirmed we're going with an 8-man pen too, at least until Giambi is eligible to come off the DL.

I guess the question is Albers or Huff for the 8th spot (assuming Allen's in)?!

The "interesting" question will be then who makes way when Giambi comes back?!

Shaw making the club surprises me a little, only because he had an option where Albers didn't. But, it's nice to see them take the guy with more upside. Righties are hitting .235 off him in his brief career. Lefties are another story, but his stuff was reportedly excellent in camp.

What a great story Scott Kazmir is. I don't know how it'll work out, but going from the Sugar Land Skeeters in the Atlantic League to back in the show is tremendous. I'll be rooting for him. Not just because he's an Indian, but because of the work he put in to get back here.

bk, Carrasco was accumulating service time while on the 60-day DL anyway, so we lost an entire year in 2012 regardless. At this point, I don't think they're worried about service time with him.

Allen was told that he was in.

I'd go with Huff in case one of our starters gets bombed in Toronto.

Also, Carrasco going back down brings Giambi back onto the 25-man, no? We'll have to ditch the 8th reliever when Kazmir is added to the roster on 4/6.

Yep.... you're right.

Huff would make the most sense then if it's just going to be for the first 4 games, might as well carry the genuine long man.

Nick Camino ‏@CaminoTribe 15s
#Indians have told LHP David Huff & OF Ezequiel Carrera that they will not make the Opening Day roster. Will pursue other clubs.

Looks like it'll be Fat Albers.
