The Browns need help in alot of areas but I really believe that not re-signing Phil will bite us in the ass for a long time to come. His ability to convert stalled drives into points might have proven to be the boost to our new coaching staff and offense's confidence that would have allowed us to make the leap from a decent team to a strong team.

Good luck as a 49er Phil (except against us of course).

It shouldn't be this sad for a team's kicker to move on, but I'm not ashamed to say that I'm really bummed to see Phil Dawson leave. It would have been very nice to see him finish his career a Brown and see the team finally win with him still here. Hats off and best wishes to him. I'm glad he's going to a team with a chance to win a title. He's one of the very few Browns since '99 that we can be proud of for what he did both on and off the field.

And it's time to change the banner again. Who goes up there now? Trent Richardson? Joe Haden? Joe Thomas?

Of course, the obvious choice to replace Phil up there is Joe Banner for two reasons: he has absolute power over the Browns, and his freaking name is Banner.
---"It was great training being there. They do it with character and intelligence. They run that organization the right way. They build through the draft. They're patient. It's just the right way to do it. It was a tremendous opportunity to be with them." Jimmy Haslam on why he'd model the Browns after the Steelers, 10/16/12

For the love of all that's holy, take Kip, Urban and Kyrie off that banner before something else happens.

That damn banner should have been Roethlisberger, Brady Hoke, LeBron James and Derek Jeter for the last few years.

That said, meh. I am glad he doesn't have to waste his entire career here. He deserves to play on a team that isn't turds floating in the bowl. I have strong doubts that had he stayed it would have had any impact on the future of the Browns.

Reading quotes from Banner/Haslem, the take I get is they want to make the team "younger."

Ok, so why are we picking on the kicker, the best damn player on the team? The one position where age is almost irrelevant.

Whatever.

All I know is this team has to start winning, I don't give two shits what the nameplates in Berea say.

To me it says the ownership really doesn't get Cleveland. It would be different if he couldn't do his job. He's still one of the best at what he does.

Maybe Dawson wanted to leave. Wouldn't blame him if he did. Two previous regimes dicked him around, this one appears to have been as well. Now, he goes to a team with a legit shot at winning a Super Bowl.

I'm glad he got out. Deserves to be kicking for a winner.

Seriously, it's a fucking kicker. And Cribbs was a fucking kick returner.

There's this and there's also the fact that even if you believe Dawson will be amongst league's elite kickers for next two years, Browns won't be in a position to benefit to a great extent.

By the time team may contend they'll need another kicker and Dawson will be staring at 40 years old.

He also signed a 1-year deal with 49ers when I have to assume others offered two years. That tells me the decision was his to go to a team with a chance to win it all, at least to some extent.

And yes, kickers are a dime a dozen. But only up to the point one is standing over a kick to win you a playoff game. That's not likely to a concern here for a year or two (at least).

Agree completely on Cribbs. Good special teams guy when he was younger and abler. Now he's a good gunner on kick returns and that's it. And that's truly dime-a-dozen.

So I hear the Browns are bringing in a Norwegian youtube sensation that goes by the nickname 'Kickalicious' to tryout for Dawson's coveted spot. No joke... Kickalicious...this should be fun.

I watched that video, and dude has a huge leg. That doesn't necessarily mean anything, but at least being from Norway he'd know how to kick in shitty weather.

Id be okay with them bringing Don Knotts in for the job, but seeing as how he has been dead for 8 years I worry about his accuracy in the windy confines of First Energy Stadium.

If the Kickalicious YouTube video is real, this guy might be able to kick for us, punt for us , and thrill the crowd with the occasional drop kick.

Still Id like to see him do it in full pads and a helmet in front of a scrum.
