Perez scratched from today's game. They are said to be "working through things with him." Francona is declining details for now, but the team is apparently going to give an update later this afternoon.

Could be nothing, but definitely weird. Figured I'd start the post if it ends up being anything significant. Let's hope it's a short-lived thread.

Has to be either a trade or an injury. Initially, the beat writers were told (and said on Twitter) that they were getting an update on Saturday. They're saying he was just seen talking to Chris Antonetti.

Hopefully this doesn't have anything to do with the Biogenesis PED stuff. A few Miami grads were on there, including, IIRC, his college roommate Danny Valencia.

This is probably the best news we could have gotten out of this story. Pestano gets to close, which most people want anyway. Perez isn't out long-term. It's not PED-related. A trade for a bona fide starter would have been nice, but he's not worth that.

Better to deal with this now instead of in May or June.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it good news. It's good that we have Vinny, but aside from a few blow-ups Perez has been incredibly effective. And even if we suspect Vinny is the better pitcher, Perez/Vinny > Vinny/replacement.

Probably because he's pissed off that he's injured, and perhaps concerned about his future. Shoulder injuries can be tricky for a power pitcher.

Probably didn't feel like talking. He was really, really excited to pitch in the WBC. Couldn't have been happy to hear today's news. Major disappointment for him.

FWIW, my buddy, who is an athletic trainer, said that the subscapularis muscle is big in arm deceleration. It takes on a lot of force in the pitching process. We all know that Perez likes to hit the ground running when he hits camp. Second straight year that it seems to have backfired for him.

My buddy said it absolutely could linger.

I don't like it at all. I want our best reliever to be the setup man. If Perez has to miss any regular season games, that won't be the case now. The setup man is more important than the closer, imo. He's the one who's pitching in high-leverage situations. Closers get clean innings, a lot of guys can do that. What setup men do is more important, I think. That's what I loved about the 2007 team. The two best relievers were the setup men (Raffie right/left). So it really didn't matter that the closer sucked.

I agree with you. I was comparing stats between the two yesterday. I agree with those who think that the best RP should pitch in the 8th. Teams can always add on in the bottom of the 8th as well.

Pestano's the obvious choice to close, though, if Perez isn't back in time.

Interestingly, though, over the last two seasons, the pitcher to enter the game with the highest leverage index is Chris Perez.

You can't find a more lazy injury than a subscapularis strain (i.e. dude clearly wasnt working out, which we all know to be true about Perez).
