The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a multiplayer trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, slicing more than $6 million off their payroll to get under the luxury tax threshold, league sources told ESPN.com.

A trade call to finalize the deal is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Grizzlies would send big man Marreese Speights, guard Wayne Ellington and guard Josh Selby to the Cavs for big man Jon Leuer. There are also believed to be a future draft pick involved in the deal.

Reducing payroll both short- and long-term has been a goal of the new Grizzlies ownership and led to other trade talks involving Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph over the past several weeks.

Speights averages 6.5 points and 4.7 rebounds as a key big man off the bench for the Grizzlies but makes $4.2 million this season and has a player option at $4.5 million for next season. The Grizzlies owe Gay, Randolph and Marc Gasol nearly $50 million alone next year.

Ellington is averaging 5.5 points in 40 games off the bench.

The Cavs were able to make the deal because they had more than $10 million in cap space in which to absorb Speights. That would likely mean the Grizzlies would receive a trade exception of more than $6 million that would be good for a year.

Selby has only played in 10 games this season, averaging two points. Leuer has played in nine games, averaging 2.4 points.

We can thank everyone who got a Quicken mortgage loan in 2012 for this trade. Takes some of the sting off that $1500 application fee for those people.

Outstanding deal though. No risk, potential reward. Speights is still young, talented, always put up great #'s per minute ... has never been able to secure minutes because he has the focus and defensive skills of a poor man's Drew Gooden.

Yeah, this sounds like a good deal, especially with a reported future 1st coming our way.

And we gave up nothing. They are saying we are trading someone named John Leuer, but I'm not sure I believe that any such person actually exists, especially with uber-prankster Ronniah Tuiasosopo running around.

You're going to have to do better than show me a picture of a guy with the name "Leuer" on the back to convince me.

Getting one by all accounts I've read. 2015 first as long as it's not in Top 5.

Chris Herrington ‏@FlyerGrizBlog
Details on pick: Has to fall between 6-14 to change hands in 2015 or 2016. Top 5 protection in 2017 or 2018.

The draft pick going to Cleveland isn't eligible to exchange hands until at least 2015, with the following protections:
2015 and 2016 — must fall between picks 6 and 14 to be dealt
2017 and 2018 — Top 5 protected

That trade is murder, with the pick. Need a bit of luck to make sure that the Grizz are picking in that range (which appears likely) but adding it for absolutely nothing of value makes this a steal for Grant.

ANYTHING you get from the 3 guys received is just gravy. Not having to watch Luke Walton's corpse anymore is the cherry on the murder-gravy sundae.

My thoughts exactly:

Angelo ‏@CavsFangelo
The Cavs turned a guy with a single digit PER into three rotation players & a lottery guaranteed pick. I'm stunned.

("Rotation" players here is only applicable because we have the worst bench in the league, and lottery only in the 5-15 range)

To be clear, this is not a guaranteed lottery pick. If it falls between 6 and 14 in either 2015 or 2016, we get it. In '17 and '18 we get it no matter where it is, unless it falls in the top 5. If, in some absurd scenario we don't get it until '19, we get it no matter what.

How hilarious would that be if we got the top overall pick in 2019 for Jon Leuer?

What's not to like about Chris Grant's newest move? At this point, every little bit helps, even if it's players with a hint of potential and another future draft pick.

Hell, I'm even starting to forgive Grant for picking TT #4 — and I can't figure out whether it's because of loyalty or simple malaise.

Its because you're looking at box scores instead of watching the games. Not that I blame you.

Quite frankly, I do watch the games — some of them, anyway. TT is as awkward as always, and he's still pretty sorry on defense (which was supposed to be his strong suit). But I'm getting the impression that maybe he's worth trying to develop further, and that he might have been the best player available at that point in that draft. (And—I know—that's not saying much.)

Nice move. We got two 25 year old former 1st round picks who, if nothing else, give you warm bodies to run out there for two years before their contracts expire, on top of getting a 1st round pick with lottery potential. I can see Speights and maybe even Ellington having a chance to play themselves into roles on this team as it moves forward.

It's very much a dice roll pick. Grizzlies good in four years or not? I'd package this "asset" in a trade as soon as I could.

/On the other front, it looks like the new Seattle Kings will go for a total re-build asap. I think this means we won't see that pick at all. Unless the ping pong balls help us out.

I think its a much better asset than you think. They only kicked the Gay question down the road until next year, when they will again be up against the luxury tax. ZBo is getting older. The only players they currently have under contract that year are Mike Conley and Tony Wroten's team option. They are a small market team that isn't likely to pull in a big name free agent. I think the question will more likely be whether they are going to blow it up and let all their free agents leave, or if they will try to eek out a little more success.

As far as the Kings, who the hell knows. The talent on that team is so much better than their record has been the last few years, but its all cobbled together wrong. If they trade some of their mismatched pieces, they should be able to put together a decent enough team that we can get their pick. It is still a first rounder through 2017, which should be long enough for them to get out of the top 10 at least once.

Following up on the summary, important to note that the hope would be that the Lakers sneak into the playoffs as an 8th seed this year. Otherwise we lose that option to swap.

And assets will be fine and well but we'll have to hit on these picks in the next two drafts if we want any shot of keeping Kyrie happy.

The Varajeo situation may set up nicely for a trade this offseason, his value may not be as high but we should be able to swing another 1st from a team if we handle the situation correctly.
Playing here is the closest thing to heaven. Really, I mean it's amazing to be in a place where the fans truly cherish their football team and stick behind them win or lose.
