What we learned week 2

1. One game does anoint or doom ANY player, that being said both rookies were very nice today: (T-Rich over 100yds 2 TDs and Weeden over 300yds 2 TDs no ints)

2. Special teams is a third of the game and its failure ultimately was the difference in this one.

3. Penalties are a reflection of coaching and discipline. We had over 100 yrds worth today.

4. When you start your dime and nickel corners, the pass D is going to look bad...and it did.

5. Browns 1-0-1 ATS with the push today +7

7. The TD pass by Cincy was out at the two. There was more than one botched sideline call. The plays were reviewed and they still missed them.
8.The incomplete pass by Cincy near the end of the first half was not corrected. We lost 20 seconds. The completion we got near the end of the first half was about ten seconds light on the clock correction they gave shur.

When you're a shitty team, the little things are what kill ya.

Trent Richardson is a playa. (I still wouldn't have traded three picks to move up and take him #3)

There is still hope for Brandon Weeden. Grain of salt performance though. Bengals D blows (see DA, Eric Zeier, and others). Vast majority of his passing yards were YAC, and a lot of the stats were against a glorified prevent. Still - you saw what the Browns saw today. Good arm. He can sling it, no question. I still question greatly all the other shit - intangibles, pocket presence awareness, mobility, intelligence. I pray I'm wrong.

The Browns starting 11 on defense when healthy is above league average. They have no depth though. Injuries, suspensions, and just being worn down in the 3Q and 4Q are going to expose that depth.

Much funner to lose the way we lost today than the way we lost last week. I guess thats what its come to being a Browns fan.

Most of the YAC for the Browns is backs. That's an issue. Or at least it sure seems that way to me. And a lot of THAT is backs picking up 8 yards on 3rd and 14.

Cincy's pass rush in this game was absolutely awful. I'll buy into Weeden a little bit more if in the next couple games they get a good rush on him and he still makes good decisions. Today, he was able to set up, survey the field with a clean pocket, and throw those short/intermediate routes with good touch.

One good sign from him, though, was that he seemed to actually find a rhythm. Too many times last year, Colt would get a first down or two, then immediately throw a ball behind/low for his guy on the next drive and stall out. Once Weeds got going, he didn't seem to lose the feel for it.....if anything, it got better. Still, that was under zero pressure for most of the game.

Bengals haven't improved their defense from last year. Browns scored 17 or more four times last season. Twice it was against the Bengals.

Ehh, Cincy had a top 10 defense last year. Think the Browns offense may just stack up better against them than others.

Cincy's D blew last year and blows this year, anyone that watched them play one of the six good teams they played last year knows this.

Pointing to their statistical rating is akin to pointing to the Browns top rated pass defense from last year.

The Browns offense still looked like a legitimate NFL offense against a sub-par defense. That is progress, no?

And Cincy's D was pretty good against the run last year. 8th in the league with ypc at 3.9 which was .4 off Baltimore but .1 better than the Steelers and .5 better than the Browns. But Richardson still tore through them. Kid looked like a legit threat which should force defenses to continue playing against the run. If Weeden can continue to throw strong, accurate short/mid passes they have a chance to continue scoring 20-30 a game.

Other than Richardson there wasn't anything really special on the offensvie side of the ball. Still need to get the deep ball over to the sidelines to really start having an effect on coverage. And on defense they did a nice job against a middle-of-the-road runner. No telling how the game goes with Haden in there but depth past starters in the secondary is nonexistent.

Doesn't mean we can't like what we saw in terms of improvement, but we're still pretty far away from where we need to be offensively.

Haden plays that game is a W, just b/c he isn't Wright or McDonald when it comes to tackling.

Protection was great. Was hard to deduce how much of that was our OL playing well or the Bungle pass rush blowing donkey balls.

This has always been a better pass blocking than run blocking line during the Joe Thomas/Alex Mack era though.

Just like I didn't want to see us writing off Weeds/T-Rich after wk 1. C'mon man, I think the optimism in the improvement is very tempered in comparison to the berating dooms day rants that were going on after week 1. To say they played well against a sub par D isn't even a hand job, let alone a blow job!

To be frank, that was far better than I expected in Week 2, even if it was a loss. I was shocked at the competence.

Meh... I watched as Ozzie Newsome was thrown that ceremonial ball to keep the streak alive in person for two years.

No big deal on a winning team. In fact, it'd be lauded as how an organization goes about things the right way if they won.

They don't lose because of shit like that. But losing makes it look worse.
