I would like to make 7 easy points...
1. Clear to see now why Zeke has basically had to wait his turn behind half of the Bad News Bears in LF. It's one thing to miss a ball...its another thing to miss because you took time to go to the dugout and get shades that you never even flipped. This guy is about as mature as the Cheeze Its on the commercials. Aaron Cunningham playing for 4 months versus this kid is the tell all; shows me the front office has a couple of brain cells. Still, Zeke has a drag bunt that would have earned him the right to pinch hit for Jake Taylor.
2. My dad was watching the game and during the 2nd inning he told me that Masterson, he thought, was the only pitcher worth holding on to at all costs. While I agree, this proves that we might have the worst staff in the Central right now...might...we do. Bat is still young and still only going to get better, but something isn't right. You just do not pitch gems like he did Opening Day and then have your SIXTH outing of 5 innings or less for the season. His slider and fb still seem to move well, but he had a much sharper downward break two months ago. I dunno what's wrong.
3. We might as well call it an 8 game streak right now. Ubaldo has been misery on the road and his August performance last year in Detroit where he got squeezed due to both benches being warned (all b/c of Detroit and Verlander starting it). I supported the trade last year, but now I wish we would have never done it. He is sometimes as bad as watching Carmona/Hernandez when he was off.
4. I like Choo hitting 3rd..not sure if I like Kip as the leadoff. Clearly, we had to shuffle. I'd like to see Brantley move back to that spot (low K's and can draw BB's and can steal).
5. I hate not being an optimist. I picked this team to win the 5th WC spot back in April. I now truly believe we are going to finish with the worst second half record in the American League and Minnesota is going to catch us. I see us finishing 4th with a record of 71-91. Attendance will be putrid come September. There is not one player on this team who can draw fans in off name alone ala Belle, Lofton, Thome, Manny, Sabathia, or old Grady.
6. I hate to say it, but Acta will probably be fired...may wait until early next year if the team starts slow much like they did to John McNamara in '91. That said, if we are going to start fresh and out with Grady, Pronk, Lowe, Hannahan, Kotchman (maybe he'll stick), Choo, Ubaldo, etc., then go ahead and sweep the entire front office. Shapiro has done nothing but promise and make us believe, about 3 different times, that selling and trading off our most expensive talent for great prospects will pay of in 1,2,3,4,5,10 years. Enough. We have a joke of a farm system, so he loses on all counts. Anotonetti should help him clean out his office and then his own and then they can hop a plane to join Eric Wedge. He did nothing at the trade deadline which surprised me b/c I figured we had to either buy or sell. He said through the media that being 4-5 GB (at the time) would not sway him from doing what he had to do. He's a complete fuckup who probably has as much say as most fronts for others do. If we are going to start fresh with new players and possibly even a new manager (Acta has one year left on contract, correct?) then we should do the same with our bigwhigs. Going 64-98 with or without Shapiro is really not a big deal.
7. If we ARE going to be sellers and start scratch for the 5th time since Brandon Phillips and Milton Bradley were 12 years old and starting for us in '03, then we might as well shop to get back our farm system. Trade Choo for 3 AA-AAA future stars. Trade Ubaldo for a minor leaguer. Trade Masterson for a top draft pick. Hell, trade everyone minus Santana, Brantley, Kipnis, Chisenhall, and Pestano. Get rid of Chris Perez. Hell, we only have Asdrubal for two more years anyway. We might as well do what we gotta do there. Yeah, it sucks...but if we are going to do this again...let's maybe this time try as best we can to mimic 1991 and sign a lot of youngsters to lenghthy contracts. This is the only option besides trying all over again with the EXACT same lineup minus Pronk, but I just do not see us doing anything else.
