By the way, there was a good "Five Questions" column in the PD with McAlister. He revealed that after the Tribe acquired him for Austin Kearns they completely revamped his mechanics and now he's got more velocity on all his pitches. This Reuben Niebla guy (minor league pitching coach) is one of the most valuable people in the organization, IMO.

Niles Rogers might turn out to be another example of a failed pitcher the Indians picked up on the cheap from another org and turned him into a successful reclamation project. Getting guys like Rogers, McAlister, and Hannahan off the scrap heap and making them into producitve major league players is the only chance this organization has to compete with the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels of the world.

Never felt 'good' about that game. And seems like every ASG break Cabbie "leaves" a little bit early even if physically he's still around. That was a huge error and turned what should have been a laugher ultimately into a loss.

Yeah, Perez needs to close down a game with a 6-4 lead, one out and nobody on, but that entire game turned on and after Cabbie's fucking sleepwalk.

Pestano struggled, McAllister couldn't regroup after the error (again), just the whole tone of the game was weird.

That's two games in a row McAlister was pitching lights out until an infielder made a error on a easy, routine play and it opened the floodgates. I can't get upset with him for giving up home runs to Trout and Pujols after Hannahan's wild throw kept the inning going, but he should have done better today. The ball that Brantley failed to catch should have been caught, too, but it looked like he didn't realize the wall was right there and his glove deflected off it as he reached for the ball.

Still, Cabby's dropped throw ended up costing four runs in a one-run loss.

The Tribe has won five of the seven games McAlister started, and it would have been six of seven if not for Cabrera's hiccup and Perez's flameout in the 9th. That bodes pretty well for the second half, considering that McAlister is our #5 starter.

However, I'm still going to have a bad taste after this one for the next four days.

No scientific evidence here, but it sure seems like the no double defense costs as many runs as it saves. Had Brantley been playing a normal depth, I think he makes that catch easily.

I still think this team will have trouble finishing .500. I don't trust Lowe at all. I just think he's bad and he was the singular reason the Braves collapsed last year (look at his September stats!). I was harder on Jimenez last year on here than anyone. I hope to God I was wrong about him, and I've been greatly pleased with what he has done the first half although you look at his 4.5 ERA and 1.5 WHIP and wonder just how good is he? The trends have been good the last couple months though. I just can't get the feeling out of my head that Tomlin, Gomez, and McCalister are just guys. McCalister has obviously been the best of the 3 but perhaps the league will catch up to him too as they appear to have done with the other two guys. I think we can stay in it longer as the Tigers do have issues as Fister has been pretty bad this year (I hope to God I was wrong about him too!! I thought he'd be very good) and I'm not convinced about the White Sox although guys like Sale and Quintana appear like they may be real and combined with Peavy that's a strong top 3 better than what we have. The Tigers still do have Verlander, Cabrera and Fielder despite their issues.

I think Manny Acta has done a phenomenal job with this team all 3 years with what he has. It's a credit to him the team stays relevant well into July and August these last two years which is more than we can say about the Browns and is the only point Chris Perez is trying to make in all his outbursts. I still say 3rd place is where we're headed though. I think we need a .300 15 home run type 2nd half from Santana to push the other two legitimately.

Jose Quintana comes out of nowhere to go 4-1 with a 2.06 ERA in 8 starts for the White Sox. He's saving their bacon. Then they trade for Youkilis and he has something like 10 RBI in his first 10 games. They're going to be tough to beat.

Same with the Tigers. I'd say 3d place for the Tribe is very realistic. Everybody is going to have to have a strong second half for them to win this division.

McAlister just needs to get over the hump. Two straight games he would have gone into the 7th with no runs allowed if not for errors on easy plays. But he was unable to pick up his defense after the errors, so that's the next hump to get over. He definitely has some stuff to work with. Five consecutive strikeouts is nothing to sneeze at, especially in the AL where the pitchers don't bat.
