Oh c'mon. This is not the same thing. This is not hazing.

There is a difference. This is not a close nit military platoon living together and putting their lives in each others hand making sure that their brothers in arms have the mettle and the balls to stand up under pressure.

This is not even a bunch of high school football assholes making the varsity sophmores carry their shoulder pads and then inviting them out to the field party like he's Mitch Kramer.

This is a gaping vagina of an "adult" who happens to be able to throw a hard round object 93 MPH deciding to intentionally throw that object at another man just embarking on his career. Why? Because he kid is good and the vagina man heard some stories about he kid's ego. Or something. And then hiding behind "old school baseball" as a justification for his assbaggery. Christ, they aren't even on the same team. This isn't good natured hazing to bring together a close nit group of infantrymen.

But a ton of baseball fans act like it was some kind of favor to the kid. Again because "old school."

It's ridiculous. And the thought that "it's always been done this way" is dubious at best and complete bullshit at worst. And I lean toward complete bullshit.

It's an excuse for Cole Hamels to act like an asshole and he took it.

Yeah. At the draft party nobody took me out back and held me down while I was sodomized with a broom handle after having to drink a whole punch bowl full of vodka mixed with urine that had big ice cubes with pieces of road kill in it.

Again, who cares if he's an asshole? Albert Belle was the biggest asshole in the major leagues bar none back in the day. What has Harper done other than showing that's he's a bit immature at times in the minors? Hell, Belle was a alcoholic that had to change his name from Joey to Albert when he was in the minors.

Seriously. What is the issue with this kid other than he's got an ego bigger than most houses? I wish Matt LaPorta was as big of an asshole as Harper, and played half as hard.

Bottom line is if we're going to start threads about the assholes in professional sports (and make no mistake that Lawrie was an asshole for what he did last night) then we'll need to secure more bandwidth and potentially provide a separate forum.

The kick I get is as Lead Pipe noted: many of the people here coddled and slobbed the knob of a huge asshole was he was a 50/50 guy here or while his posse ran The Q and he was taking the Cavs to the NBA championship series in '07.

Then they have the balls and not the brains to bitch about Bryce Harper.

Watching Harper now is what it must have been like to see Mantle in 1951 - Just watch him hang in versus lefties - the Tribe lefties could learn something - plays with joy & total effort - whoever started the As**ole thread should be ashamed - the guy is enjoying the city, fans, and teammates and the Nats are 15 games over .500 - a young and developing team fun to watch - actually much like the Tribe (though some fans apparently don't know what "developing" means with young players). Too bad someone like Choo couldn't give a quote like Harper. And, if the Nats can sign Werth for 7yrs $126 mil, signing Harper will not be too tough. They got til after 2017 to do it too.

Well, to be fair to bookelly, I have never meant a 19-yr old that wasn't an asshole. and I put myself squarely in that camp. But relatively speaking, I can think of 100 bigger assholes in sports off the top of my head.
