Dropping Cable

Unread postby e0y2e3 » Thu May 24, 2012 6:22 pm

The day the NBA Finals ends. Kind of amped up. I'll steal HBO Go on my XBox, Netflix on the XBox, Hulu Plus on the XBox, NBA League Pass Broadband next year, leaving only TNT not streaming NBA games yet and Mad Men as obstacles yet to clear.

If League Pass Broadband comes to the XBox like MLB.TV too... well... amazing.

I decided I was tired of wasting money on having way too many channels on the super everything package, my only alternative is to save $50 and have the super nothing 99 channel package. They can like my balls, I don't watch all the much TV anyhow.

Although man is HBO Go awesome.

I might watch 20 different channels if I'm lucky. I have no reason to keep TWC, but I'm lazy about it.

A la carte cable would be the shit.

I'm dropping it all after Game of Thrones ends. Have Netflix, which will suffice until GoT picks up next year. All this is subject to change if I can get Sunday Ticket for free again.

It's just, as a matter of personal health, cable does nothing but make me worse... I can't figure out why I keep paying for it. I only enjoy an infinitesimally small part of what I get out of it and I can still get that on the free, easily.

I dropped my subway pass too, there is no excuse for me to ever not walk where I need to be.

This summer is going to be about getting myself right and on the correct path, shit like TV and Subway passes won't do that. Hell, I just upgraded gyms to a place that will do me right. I'm tired of the stale life I am force-fed and told to pay for... this shit just gets stupid.

It's gonna be a liberation summer, fuck the America standard and it's gawd damn quicksand.

And even if you want to eat you some America on the daily, there is still no cost-benefit rational that explains paying for cable unless you got kids.

If you call and say you want to cancel they'll call you back a couple days later and give you some deals.

We got our cable & internet bill down to like $72 a month and they threw in a free DVR

My little brother has been using mine, just had to give him my Comcast P/W.

I'm set to get a FIOS login when my cable disappears Friday.

This works like a charm. Been doing it for 5 years now, every time I see any sort of promotion from a satellite company or when my promotional pricing is coming up. I'm currently paying $89 for triple play package with cloud DVR service and the fastest internet you can imagine, which should be running me $175.

The last time I tried doing it they wanted proof I was switching to DirecTV if they didn't lower me. No problem. I called DTV, set up an installation date, forwarded the confirmation email to the cable company, and then cancelled my DTV appointment.

Any chance they ever figure out people are going to share ala Netflix? Incidentally a co-worker told me today she's been using her brother's Netflix account for a year and somehow they caught on and killed her connection. I haven't been keeping up with all the latest out there on the digital front but I am certainly paying for too much crap right now.

There's literally 100 people who use the same League Pass account as I do. Once in a while a message pops up about too many concurrent devices logged in, but you just refresh and its fine again.

It's crazy, when I was looking at colleges (10 years ago) some of the dorms didn't have cable and I considered it the equivalent of no indoor plumbing. But even though I still watch a lot of cable, I really can't think of much content that isn't available via the internet today. ESPN sucks now, good sitcom/drama reruns can be had through a variety of ways, TV news is pretty much obsolete, and live sports are exploding on computer and iPad programs. One stop shopping (particularly movie channels) and being able to toggle different sporting events are the big reasons I'll keep paying for cable, but it's becoming less and less relevant.

Don't assume that. I have my internet through TWC and my TV through DirecTV, and WatchESPN won't work for me. Not that there's very much on there that I miss...

Hrmmm.... isn't that because TWC refuses to pay for WatchESPN so it is entirely blocked though?

Like I use Watch ESPN at my office with my Comcast password all the time when I am stuck here late at night.

No, TWC is part of that WatchESPN gang. But when I try to log on it tells me that TWC isn't my television provider. So even though I pay TWC for internet, they know I don't have it for TV.

I suggest just getting someone else's password, like with the HBO GO deal.

Just got home, HBO was instantly blocked and the FIOS password I have made it work. Watch ESPN is still chilling and I have access to some weird ass movies through the XBox via FIOS.

I'm leaving cable to better myself, but damn if there ain't a lot of free shit out there.

Peeker you probably need to open a ticket with TWC. I have Brighthouse which is TWC's little stepsister (some kind of incestuous relationship) and I had to have my MyBrighthouseServices account deleted and restored fresh. Once they did that I was easily able to setup WatchESPN (which I've never used), HBOGo, MaxGo etc. I think even BTN has a go app, though I am not sure watching Purdue wrestle Minnesota is something I want to watch.

Also I did verify ey0 that HBOGO is now working on my Xbox and Roku2. Of course if you kill cable then you have to get someone else's password for all this stuff is that what you implied?

FIOS is Verizon's fiber optic network and a very viable/cheeper alternative to Cable. It's available on all of the East Coast but Boston because fucking our mayor is a toolbox and Comcast has a monopoly (that is deregulated...).

IOW: It's just a cable provider, I could steal HBO Go/Max GO/etc if I wanted with a TWC or Comcast password too.

My payment to the friend that hooked me up is my HULU Plus and Netflix passwords.

Same here. I have DirecTV for TV and TWC for internet, and can't access ESPN3. DTV doesn't offer it, and TWC requires you be hitched to their cable as well.

I've dropped cable and get most of my content through a roku.

A service I didn't see mentioned in this thread is playon. I bought a lifetime license for $50. It brings a lot of internet only content to your tv/roku/360. (I don't know how scaled down some services are on the 360 when compared to the roku).
