Add most clutch player in the NBA (2012 edition) to that list:

Per an ESPN Insider article (only posting 2 paragraphs):

Method:
If we're being true to the role of a closer in baseball, we're looking for the player who takes matters into his own hands and increases his usage the most with the game on the line. To measure this, we'll call upon the usage rate statistic, which calculates how often a player uses a team's possession while on the floor either by field goal attempt, free throw attempt or turnover. And how do we define when the game is on the line? For these purposes, we'll adopt NBA.com's definition of clutch situations: when the score margin is within five points in the final five minutes of the game.

There's a graph in between that illustrates the stats that the "Holy smokes" is in reference to.

Kyrie:
Holy smokes, Kyrie Andrew Irving. It's a shame he's been shut down, because the kid has wasted no time to assert himself on the big stage. The 20-year-old rookie leads the NBA in added usage in clutch situations. He normally uses "just" 27.9 percent of his team's possessions, but when the going gets tough, Irving gets going. In clutch situations, Irving raises his usage rate to 47.2 percent, which is tied for the highest in the NBA along with Carmelo Anthony. And he's not just chucking up shots like Anthony; Irving has made just as many crunch-time shots as Anthony in 28 fewer attempts.

Really? 24 hours after the news breaks and there's not a mention on these boards of Kyrie being named ROY?

I'll give everyone the benefit of the doubt that because it was a foregone conclusion, no one bothered posting about it.

Did not know this:

At the Rising Stars game during All-Star weekend in Orlando, Irving made all eight 3-pointers to win MVP honors. Posing for a photograph afterward, Irving lowered the crystal he was presented and told the photographer, "Make sure you get the Cleveland" on the front of his jersey.

"That wasn't a publicity stunt at all," Irving said when the season ended. "I just wanted to make sure they got the Cleveland uniform in it. We're not as publicized as everybody else."

:thumb up: Absolutely. It's a lock.

Only thing that would make it more of a lock is if he grew up in the region. Because then he'd get it. He'd really really get it.

Big news guys, Gilbert also stated that since there is a Casino downtown now Cleveland is worthy of hosting another All-Star game and that he'll be betting on it!

If they actually get that All-Star game that will be a nice little short economic boost, unlike the casino. In fact, getting things like that on the regular is the only way to make the casino an actual boost economicly. So, while I am sure Gilbert is trying to get the ASG for 100% selfish reasons (as Rich said, he's probably still laughing from his counting room), this could be a nice little thing for Cleveland.

eh, if done properly the casino could bring a pretty decent and long lasting economic boost. I'd start by limited dining options with in the casino itself and comps from the casino that work in the local restaurants. Typically the issue with casinos is people do not leave. Every time I am in Greektown I use my comps at the surrounding restaurants and enjoy the area.

I'd also not allow a hotel and make them team up with the hotels already in downtown. If they figure out a spread the wealth this will be a success. Getting people downtown on a regular basis is already part way there. They need to be a part of the downtown experience, not the entire downtown experience.

No idea if any of those ideas were put in to place before allowing the casino (I doubt it) but they should be.

Seriously, go take an urban planning class, casinos, unless they are a large tourist pull typically don't do shit for the local economy and in depressed areas after a couple of years when the shine wears off they are mostly nothing more than a tax on the poor and old.

One Casino doesn't make a place Vegas.

No one needs a college course. The extrapolation to Las Vegas is taking an extreme POV to makes ones case unassailable. The purpose is not to become Vegas but to prevent money from leaving this area. The fact Gilbert engineered the casino to tie in with other local assets makes the model untested. If given the choice between letting money leave Cleveland/Ohio for other easily accessible areas and keeping it here, I choose here.

Also fuck the poor and the old (you stated this as fact not emotionally so this is just me ranting). Why should we feel sorry for them? Are casino odds some magical unknown. Lets legalize drugs, but God help us we better control these predator casinos. PFFFFFFT!

BTW Gilbert's group bought the Ritz, but it does not have near enough rooms to serve as the casino hotel. Line is also a 2 hour wait to get in...

Seriously, visit downtown Detroit before casinos and visit after.

OJ hit most of my other points. My dad leaves the state a few times a month to blow some cash in Detroit. Now he will have the option of a Caesars casino for an additional half hour to build his comps for when he goes to Vegas. Ask him which one he will go to. Money staying in state > Money leaving the state everytime, but then again I didn't take a class to provide me with that equation. ;-) ;)

Casinos economic impact on Detroit has been somewhere between Meh- and Meh.

It will be the same in Cleveland.

That is the point.

The only way to make a real impact is to draw the conventions, All-Star Games, etc on a regular basis. Until then they slowly degrade into something where old people, poors, gamblers and young kids blow money once or twice a quarter. It just is what it is. This has been studied to death. The only worse investments for urban renewal are sports teams/stadiums.

The money staying in state is cute and nice, but the overall impact is... meh-. That is the point. And it's more often then not off-set but the additional spread of gambling within the community and the casino sucking up money that previously would have been dropped at local bars, Indians Games, etc.

^Won't disagree with that to a degree (better chance a casino go'er in Cleveland goes to/comped Indians tix than an Erie gambler). The casino is not a panacea, but a step, a complimentary piece of an actual real fix that includes more business downtown, residents, and the conventions mentioned. Cleveland is making somewhat of a comeback led by hipsters and assorted other youngish people moving back downtown. Will Cleveland reach a critical mass and real turning point, or another blip like the previous downtown revival???

It's so funny that it took Gen Y in Cleveland till now to embrace the downtown reverse white flight that most of the country has been witnessing since the early aughts.

And the casino is nothing, it is a bullshit blip that will only matter if real revitalization works. It's a shamockery. If Gilbert gave a damn about Cleveland he would be building the biotech out there like he is in Deeeeeeeeeetroit.
