Absolutely . I have as close to zero doubt as possible that he is a complete and total douchebag. Probably his parents too. I also can't think of a single player on the face of the earth that I'd rather have in my organization right now.

Yeah, I guess I'd get a kick out of it if the kid got a little comeuppance. A little humility can serve everyone well. But I don't want the nicest players, I want the best ones. If they are exemplary humans as well then that's a nice bonus.

As to the whole GED vs diploma thing...I get where that comes from because for the vast majority of us it will always be worth it and the "right thing to do" to go through high school. But this kid is a once in a generation talent. Probably the most naturally gifted ballplayer to arrive since Junior Griffey.

He's already made more money than any of us will in our lives. He's already set for life as long as he doesnt blow it. He also has the potential to make a billion dollars over the course of his career. Believe that.

If he was my kid, with that talent and potential, my job #1 is to nurture and protect that talent. If that means a GED to face better competition and sooner position him to maximize that talent then so be it. This is not only his job, this is his career. And what he did was absolutely the right call.

And you know how I know it was the right call? Because he is a millionaire playing the outfield for a MLB team before the age of 20.

I agree with most of the comments here. Kid can play. You want him on your team. The 7 years LeBron played with the Cavs were indisputably the 7 best consecutive years in franchise history by astronomical margins. The Cavs had national relevance every single year he was with the team. The man could and still can play. The best Tribe years in recent memory were when some combo of Albert Belle and/or Manny being Manny were patroling the outfield and mashing.

As I read all this I find myself thinking, "Who cares?"

Yes, Harper can't make up for his attitude by carrying the team like a player can carry a team in basketball. But at the same time, he can't destroy the team, either. If that was possible, the 90s Indians never would've been competitive. Baseball isn't reliant on teamwork and chemistry. Harper just needs to produce. It doesn't matter at all that some scouts think he's a jerk.

This is ridiculous. Kid may be a mouthy punk, but watching him play, you'd think he was a Grady Sizemore clone with a cannon for an arm. Runs hard on every play, takes the extra bases even when they aren't offered, lays out for catches, etc. Plays the game hard and seems to already be producing in a rookie season with no talent protecting him in the lineup.

If you guys think that a late season browns game full of Steelers fans is bad, you should have seen the dickbaggery on display at that baseball game. By way of comparison, Griffey Jr (the first guy that popped to mind due to them being so good so young with all of the hoopla surrounding them) was given his initiation to old school baseball soon after the season started On July 22 1989 vs the Toronto Blue Jays.

"Those" guys are the players that are thought to be the leaders of whatever the next generation is.

Hazing is a rite of passage. When done correctly, it brings the new kids into the mix with the vets. If the new kid handles it correctly, they earn respect in the clubhouse. If they bitch and moan, they have a lot of work to do before they get "trusted".

Guys get hit. A high percentage of them are for some purpose. How often do you see guys miss with a fastball in the other batters box? Not very often because the guys throwing the pitches are pretty fucking good at knowing where it is going. If you get hit with a fastball at the ML level, I would guess way more than half were on purpose. Breaking shit that gets away is a mistake. Fastballs are not.

I'm not a big fan of fights in hockey unless they have a clearly defined purpose (shift momentum, make a player atone for a cheap shot). Most beanings have a clearly defined purpose, so I'm fine with them.

this is just BS – Harper has been a great teammate so far. Very humble (in at least 4 long interviews). And, while taking some photo’s for the team, was on the national Mall and took an at bat at a co-ed softball game going on (he was asked to by the team’s SS). Talked to everyone, waited for pictures to be taken and could not have been any nicer. If this is an “a-hole” let’s hope your team gets 10 like him. Plays hard, does not loaf, and is respectful of the game and his teammates. Yeah, he got hit deliberately by Hamels (who admitted he intentionally threw at him). Harper’s response, run to first, go to third and then steal home off Hamels (after timing Hamels slow motion move to first) – a very head’s up play. Then make a diving catch to prevent a run from scoring from third and then to top it off, hustles for a 2B on a bloop hit just past the infield. After the game, he laughed off the HBP and said it was “just baseball” and that Hamels is a “great pitcher.” Gee sounds like a jerk to me. Somebody owes someone an apology (if you have the guts) and it ain’t Harper.

That blog was about an 18-yr old Harper. Anyone who has watched him mature over the year can see a difference. Anyone who could "hate" Harper does not know the facts, knows little about baseball or how a human being can mature. Harper has done it all - on and off the field - he's not a jerk, prick or a-hole. He's a ballplayer! too bad the Tribe does not have him (Strasberg would be nice too).

Re: Hazing.....my best analogy for this was when I was Active Duty. I was on submarines, and I got the living SHIT hazed out of me. I was invited out for beers and social events, but when I stepped onboard (when I was on the boat) I was a non-qualified NUB. (Non-useful body) I didn't like it, but I didn't resent most people for it....the fact of the matter is, we got hazed because we were working 12 hour days generally and they wanted to see what happened when we're placed under a large degree of stress, how it is handled. It's a personality test and a stress test, for when things get hectic under a crazy real life situations.

There's a fine line to it, but harmless shit like making the kids pick up donuts, wear dresses, and carry bags shows the makeup of a rookies character. You're not out to humiliate anyone, just wash a lit bit of the overwhelming hubris every 18 year old (ESPECIALLY rich ass 18 year olds) is born with, and do some team building.

Unfortunately, we're just too touchy-feely and gentle to let it go on anywhere anymore, and so it will stop.

Just like being able to flirt with the hot young interns in your office, etc.

Sometimes we're too damn PC to survive.
