Yep. You cannot give bad teams extra outs. When you give Really good teams extra outs or don't put them away with a guy on 3B and < 2 outs you're going to lose most nights.

For as improved as Santana has been this season behind the dish he's still one of the lowest baseball IQs on the roster.

I'm with you Reb... I don't think he's 'selfish', per se. I don't think he goes up there saying "I''m crushing this shit and pulling it so I can be the hero even though I'd be as much a hero with an opposite field double or base hit".

I think he's still relatively inexperienced, cocky and pull happy.

Those last two ABs were horrifying. I think he might be a bit dull and less than molecular biologist in the head, but I don't think he's consciously selfish.

Agreed, he needs to hit. But he's not right now, so the manager needs to take advantage of his abilities and minimize the impact of his weaknesses. Given that he's not hitting but still walking a TON (I think he has the best plate discipline in the majors), I'd love to see Santana hit leadoff or 2nd. With how much he gets on base he's the perfect table setter. He's not the prototypical top of the order hitter, but who cares. He'd be great up there. Then move Kipnis down. With the way Kip is raking, he'd drive in a ton of runs in the #3 or 4 hole.

He'd be an awful second hitter for obvious reasons.

And I get the on base thing. I also get that a guy you can't hit and run with, can't hit to the right side, doesn't make enough contact and will clog up the bases means something to.

Lastly, if you ain't got someone who can hit batting second, thus forcing you to put a guy like Santana there, you aren't going to have a good line-up.

The players are the players. Mix em' up and there still the players. They'll score more runs when they rid themselves of the 3 or 4 dogs in the line-up - no matter where they are hitting.

They have very few guys that can hit 3-4-5. And one of them hasn't played a full season in forever. They need him in one of those slots.
