Occupy Cleveland has done a few other things, all minor stuff, but THEY PUSHED THE FREAKING BUTTON! I'm real sorry about the rest of the idealists getting tarred by this... But they, the ones I disagree with 100% but breaking no law, have to work within the system.

Oh and Peeks they lost their lease on some warehouse space in Cleveland cuz the lease dictated "dry" premises. Maybe they had some hackety sack going on in thar?

I sympathized (still do, to an extent) with the complaints brought forward by the Occupy Movement. Income inequality, corporate influence/power in and of gov't bothers me. However, their "solutions" (such as they existed at all) were pretty socialist (really "socialism," not what the GOP calls socialist) and a bit Militant. I'm a liberal, not hard socialist.

That said, I saw file footage of one of the would-be bombers calling himself an "anacho-communist." Uhhhh, you can be an anarchist or you can be a communist. You CANNOT be both. ::doh::

A recent editorial did a pretty good job of explaining "corporate personhood" in the context of Nancy Pelosi's silly proposed constitutional amendment. In part....

The Supreme Court and U.S. law have long held that Americans do not surrender the rights they enjoy individually when they act in association with one another. This has been a fundamental feature of U.S. law since the very beginning, and even before that, inasmuch as the notion that collective action does not deprive us of our rights goes back into the Common Law as well. U.S. court cases going back to the 18th century recognize that fact, as does federal statute: 1 U.S.C. §1 reads in part: “the words ‘person’ and ‘whoever’ include corporations, companies, associations, firms, partnerships, societies, and joint stock companies, as well as individuals.”

Strange things give the Left the heebie-jeebies, and “corporate personhood” seems like a strange thing. But “corporate personhood” is simply the notion that incorporated groups — businesses, political parties, unions, nonprofits, etc. — are single entities under the law. One would think that the Left would find this convenient: If Monsanto is not a “person” under the law, it cannot be regulated, taxed, sued, or fined, because for the purposes of the law it does not exist. Without the ability to treat enterprises as a single legal entity, there would be no redress for damages caused by a defective GM vehicle except to file claims against each individual owner of the 1.57 billion shares of GM stock outstanding.

But if GM and Monsanto can be sued, then they can defend themselves from suits. If they can be taxed on their property, then they can own property. If they have liabilities under contracts, then they have rights under contracts, too. If they have liabilities under the law, then they have rights under the law.

We are permitted to act in association with others...as corporations, unions, non-profits or clubs...including joining forces to advocate for or against political candidates. Recall that Citizens United was about banning an independently-produced film about Hillary Clinton. If you can ban films, you can ban books and magazine articles and billboards and blog posts. As the op-ed asks, one wonders which part of the 1st amendment phrase "Congress shall make no law..." Pelosi doesn't understand.

Edit: In hindsight I guess I should say..."forget that last sentence". Because Pelosi is not proposing legislation that would fly in the face of the constitution. She is at least proposing the diminishment of the 1st Amendment in the proper way...by amending the constitution. That makes it no less brazen, radical, freedom-limiting or ill-advised, but it does make it more proper, as far as I can see.

So yesterday I was watching how the occupy protesters in Chicago for the NATO convention won by "closing down" the Boeing Corporate HQ for the day. The occupiers announced they were going to protest there so Boeing told their Corp HQ staff to go ahead and work from home that day.

The Occupy spokeswoman slash granola girl was so happy and proclaimed that "they shut down Boeing for the day so that no military planes and military weapons were being produced today by Boeing". I wonder if any one had the heart to tell her that they don't make any of that stuff in the downtown Chicago HQ office building and that the factories were unaffected by the HQ staff working from home?

Boeing has a large defense and security (essentially military and space products) division that is headquartered out of St Louis. It is a substantial business in terms of scale for Boeing.

Just very funny that you could tell by this woman's comments that she really believed that those products were manufactured in the Chicago highrise office building. They said she was the "spokeswoman" but I don't know if that is an official position for the Occupy movement of not.

In reality this didn't impact Boeing's operations at all...biggest impact of that part of the protest was just reducing the revenue and profits of the local coffee shops and local restaurants since none of the Boeing HQ staff was in the HQ office that day.
