The NFL is shrink-rapping football fans.

Unruly fans booted from stadiums this year will be required to pass a code-of-conduct exam — or they won’t be allowed back in for another game.

The idea was hatched by a licensed psychotherapist, The New York Post has learned.

“We’re not trying to squash anyone’s passion. We’re just trying to say don’t be violent,” said Dr. Ari Novick, the Californian who’s the brains behind the program.

Requirements will vary depending on the stadium, but most of the time the stadium louts will have to pass the test before being allowed back in, he said.

Used to feel like if I said the above I was coming off as better than others, and Christ, I know that's not the truth - we're all gonna wind up in the same f-ing hole one day. Just really sick of the "lifers" down there - which by the way, know jack-shit about the game.

Classic story - and I'm sure one of many like it, since I lost count of how many times someone from the bleachers kicked it, only to be memorialized the next week with some sort of stuffed animal on the seat, with a note attached - apparently in some sort of broken English. Anyway, kid a year younger than my brother in our neighberhood ran his car into a tree coming from a Browns game. DOA. My dad goes to the funeral, tells me "you shoulda seen his friends, thought they were gonna jump into the casket, a real sad scene." Well, guess who filled up an entire row about 12 rows in front of me - those 6 friends. So drunk each and every game they could hardly stand by halftime.

Used to love football Sunday, going down there. Now, freebies in good weather, good seats, against a good team - and I'll consider it. Maybe.

And haven't even broached the topic of the Browns patheticness yet.

I'm with you. Tailgating by itself is an event. I might even be happy tailgating and then sitting outside the stadium watching the game on a TV in an RV.

But all we need is a couple seasons of important late season games and no one will mind packing that stadium in shitty weather.

The NBA is dead to me and baseball games are pleasant, but most games I really couldn't give a shit if the Indians win or not, so I'm not emotionally invested the way I am with football.

So it's not even close as to which games I enjoy the most.

As a sports fan. I've discovered that the two better places to catch games are either in a minor league teams (Aeros, Monsters, etc), or at an IndyCar event. Tribe and Cavs also get it. two of the better run teams imo for that.

Both are usually run by friendly people, and allow you to just be in more of a relaxed environment. Hell, even though you're paying a pretty high price for an indy car ticket at times, they try to make it up to you by having some very fan friendly events mixed in.

I've yet to really see the Browns nail that though. Even at training camp, which is one of the easiest things in the world to manage, they've found various ways to hire a-holes in terms of security and ushers.

You mix that in with the fact that the product on the field flat out, sucks?

Totally get what everyone is saying here and agree with it. But I do feel like winning has just about everything to do with the overall experience of an NFL game. Went to the JAX game this past November, second row endzone opposite Dawg Pound, and what a game. No problem with any drunks or plain old idiots, just a genuine great game that finished right in front of me as time expired. Now, I understand that was pure luck that I had that great experience. But if the Browns put better product out on that field, I think every game could great. It's when they truly blow that people add misery to their drunkenness and it gets ugly and annoying.

After that yearly experience I quickly remember why I stopped being a season ticket holder.

My son enjoys the concessions & souvenirs....and the x-rated t-shirts by the street vendors are really cool.

He then questions me all the way home on why we are Brown's fans.

The NFL is an awful sport to watch live. I went to 6-8 games a year when I was in Cleveland. Sitting on my couch getting drunk watching on my TV or pounding wings and 22 oz. drafts at a local bar is far better for so many reasons.

I give my kid credit for dealing with the abuse. See we live in the outpost town, Youngstown, which has gone Black & Gold. He gets shit...well every day . It's ugly here. He has all the Browns gear and wears it proudly. Our conversations are quiet and between father & son. I share them with you caus we are friends and gotta stick together.

I have explained the Steelers were won in a poker game & the Rooney's were moonshiners. The toothless bastards were the doormats for 40 years, we've won more world championships than they have. Chuck ( John Carroll)and Cowher were Browns. The Steelers cut Johnny U & Lenny Dawson for Christ sake. The Steelers always were dirty and get all the calls. Their 70's team were juicin before juice was in. Holmes shot at a state police chopper and never missed a game.......you try shooting at a state police chopper sometime.

We been to the Hall of Fame. He is all in. He wants to believe. He drinks the kool-aide. I have been saying "next year" , wait till you see who we get in the draft, and this guy can coach.....his whole life.

My kid has heard all the morale stories about "patience", hard work, appreciates history, God, family, and the good old USA. He knows nothing worth anything come quick or easy. He has seen sacrifice, believe me on this
one and knows there are a whole lotta things in life more important than sports. He's done pretty well too, honor roll, blah, blah,blah.

But in Cleveland and in 20+ other NBA arenas across the country the "NBA Experience" is basically a Rock & Jock cd played at 11 and really shitty play from the home team.

I know you've got an axe to grind with gilbert. but that take, I really disagree with.

Yeah the whole sign making thing can be a bit cheesey, but I like how they run things there.

They seem to actually give a shit about their season ticket holders from what I've seen, and their promotion is pretty solid. I mean, considering the fact Cleveland is far from a Basketball town during the lean years, I'd say they've done a good job.

Of course, to perhaps back your argument, my main negative experiences with a sports franchise have come by way of the Browns and their set up. So it could be that the Browns have made me so jaded that someone not giving me a poke in the eye looks amazing in comparison.

I've also never seen a Celtics game, Lakers, OKC, etc. So I have no clue what the rest of the NBA looks like in terms of atmospherics, promotion and how their arena is. So again, that could be preventing me from seeing the whole picture as well.

I went to a game I think two seasons ago here in Nashville at LP Field, the one against the Redskins where Vince Young threw his equipment in the stands. We had some clowns in front of us who were blitzed before they got to the game. They keep verbally fighting and turning around and yelling at the people a row behind us. Apparently they are season ticket holders, because they kept standing up on every play, and we told to sit down by literally everyone around us the one woman in the group told the people to shove it you know where/threatened to fight them and said "I own these seats, I can do whatever I want in them". I can understand standing up on important plays, but really on every play? That's classless imo, and too, they don't "own the seats", they just own the license to use the seats they buy every home game, there are still rules. I was surprised they weren't ejected because of how crass they were being, but it made the whole experience stupid. Like I said, I can understand standing up on important plays but on every freaking play? Have some class people.

It is hard for kids to root for losers, I get that. But I asked them if they would root for the Chinese to beat the US in the Olympics in an event where the Chinese were clearly superior.

I asked them if they would root against their school in football/basketball if they were playing a team that was clearly superior.

I asked them if they would root for the bully that was beating up their friend if the bully were clearly stronger/tougher.

Then I talked about integrity and loyalty and not being a frontrunner. And how frontrunners make me sick. "You're not from Pennsylvania, you're from Ohio". And how I only saw one decent season from the Browns until I was 14, so if I could take it, so could they.

And I've taught them unreasonable hatred for the Steelers since Day One.

Since I've made such a big deal about it, likely one of them will go against me one day just to piss me off. Then they can go live with their mother.

On a side note, I also let them know that they could choose another team to root for each year to satisfy their desire to root for a team with a pulse, so long as they didn't root for them against the Browns and so long as it wasn't ever the Steelers.

Anytime I saw any NFL gear in the crib other than Browns I just threw it away. I told him when he was 3 if he rooted for the Inbred he'd have to move out. He got the message.

My daughter flirted with being one of those people for a while. I told her I wouldn't pay or show up at her wedding if she kept it up. That worked, too.


My only issue is she's in puppy love with Colt and I hate to see her disappointed.

the problem is...that the folks they hire are from an outside company, and not directly hired from the Browns.

A lot of the better run orgs. in the city, go that route and hire directly. Things are easier to control, and easier to manage in that case.

Also, quit hiring dickheads. I've met a couple of the old muni-lot level Browns ushers from back in the day, and they were pretty cool guys, some ex-cops, and knew how to handle managing a football game in Cleveland. There's ways of handling a crowd without acting like the damn gestapo.

I know it subconciously has something to do with the product being such garbage here for the last 15 years, but NFL football is my least favorite of all the sports to see live and in person.

Between the sterile atmosphere, no one being aloud to stand up anymore, colder weather, idiots that can't handle their alcohol, and 20 minute lines to take a leak ... I'd much rather watch the NFL at home. NBA and NHL are amazing sports to watch from the lower bowl. Baseball is so great to watch in person for all the obvious reasons.

This will be my 25th year as a season ticket holder (I have missed about six home games since 1988) and I can surely relate to the shittier and shittier feeling. I might well have given up the seats by now if my wife weren't so insistent that we not quit while we're down. (She hasn't missed a single game since '99...if we were "up" of course, we wouldn't quit either)

It gets old going down there to freeze our asses off and watch a dog shit product, walking a mile from the parking spot each way, and paying full price for August exhibition farces. We're fortunate in our area not to have to deal too much with alcohol-addled assholes...that's not an issue. I just increasingly feel like a total sucker for sending these bozos my money every May. We joke with the guys who have sat near us for 14 years that we really need to get the "L" tattooed on our foreheads if we put up with this shit for one more year.

As far as the actual product being a compelling event to see live, I maintain that if there were a habitually competitive team on the field, the product is still far better than any NBA game ever...and I have seen NBA games in several venues...yawn. The Steelers game on Thursday night two years ago was awesome to attend in person, even though it was about 10 degrees out. But those days are so fucking few and far between, since like 1989.

One word about standing up. We're in the second row off the field so it's not a big issue for us...and I try like hell never to be "that guy"...the 50-something lifer being disparaged upthread for not cheerfully agreeing to a)stand for three hours because some bozo attending his first ever game, with a dozen beers in him decides the only good fan is the one standing up and screaming...because after all, it's 3rd and 6, and what's the matter with you people? (the answer is that we were sitting here being disappointed while you were still breastfeeding) ....or b)accepting the fact that he won't see what he paid 75 bucks to see unless he also stands up every time said bozo and his buddies want to stand for a quarter or two.

I hate with a passion the administrative "cleansing" of bad fan behavior. I detest the "text fan misconduct to 76543" messages on the scoreboard, and the Carmen Policy closed circuit, big brother cameras ever since the "bottle game". It's a different world we live in today from the crowds (and teams) I grew up loving in the 60's...when every fan in the whole place would stand and scream every time Jim Brown took a handoff, sensing the strong possibility that we were about to see a touchdown.

It's getting worse...but not enough (yet) for me to quit. I'd somehow feel like "they" won...without even knowing who "they" are. I'm also afraid they'll finally have that breakout year...and I won't be there.

Kinda tired of a lot of the 'they're losing a generation' thing. I was born in 1966. Aside from one year in 1980 my generation endured the same shitty football. I was 14 then when the Kardiac Kids stuff happened. As if it was anything other than divisional playoff game. I was about 20 when Bernie and the boys lost 2 straight. That's all she wrote. WY I see it my 11 yr old is ahead of the game and my two older ones are no worse off than I was. My kids watch Tribe/Cavs/Browns because I do. If they don't want to watch it that's fine. I think with kids it's about finding a reason to hang more with dad and they grow into the fandom part.

You are right, but at least 'your generation" had one of the more exciting years of Browns football in the Super Bowl Era. While "my generation" had the Bernie years. And even though they didn't even make a Super Bowl those teams will make fans for life.

What does the next generation have? What does Triple-S's generation have? A year of LeRoy Hoard running hard, making us temporarily forget that he was from scUM? Hoard catching a TD on his back? Metcalf's two returns? Run Willie Run and backing into the playoffs? 6 good games from DA? All this plus The Move and all of the losing that has followed. This is not the stuff that makes life long fans.

I really don't know, but my 7 year old daughter has no idea the Browns exist or the NFL for that matter. My area is heavily into the Steelers and she could care less about them, but she wants to go to the Shoe and see a game.
