Justin Masterson.
Guy was a beast today.
What's his contract like?
Can we tear it up and give him a pay hike, and extend his contract for like 10 years?
Before he becomes too good to keep and he doesn't turn into a CC or Lee who got so good we couldn't afford to them.

Not only that, if his team keeps doing crap like that to him, (no run support except for one inning) and a closer explosion, he might not want to stay.

You have to love what he has done the last 12 months, has the potential to be a genuine Ace. I would be banging his door right now to get another year or two on the end of whatever his current contract is.
Detroit, we are coming for the central division in 2014!!!

Tremendous today. He's been tremendous the last year in general.

His 92 is heavy. Like a freaking bowling ball. He repeats his delivery and keeps those mechanics in line and he's a candidate to dominate guys for the next 5-6 years.

As opposed to cheese dick C Perez and his hyped 91 that he can't control or throw by anyone.

He annoys me. Seriously.

1 year/$3.825M (2012) So this could be it. Hope not. BTW, if you want to see who makes what in the MLB the link I gave you is to the old Cots Baseball Contracts blog. Apparently they were snapped up by Baseball Prospectus. Wherever they are it's a pretty good site for player and team salary amounts, contract terms, and other goodies like FAs and all kinds of stuff.

And looking around on the Tribe section something just occurred to me: with Droobs new contract we now have a player under contract beyond the 2012 season. Guess the Dolans figure the Mayans aren't right after all. ;-) ;)

It's only his first year of arbitration. Indians still control his rights for 2 years, minimum, without an extension being negotiated.

It's not the Indians MO to sign pitchers to long(ish) extensions. The last one was Westbrook, a very reliable MOR starter who could always be counted on for ~200 IP. Then he got hurt.

Have to imagine that the Indians will wait a year or two and then sign something similar to what they signed with Asdrubal.

They're not going to go 4 or 5 years with any pitcher, regardless of his good health.

Just heard #Indians fans will have some more good news in the next few days. Organization looking to keep core players, I know that.

Masterson or Choo are the only ones that make sense, and I doubt Boras gets anything done with Choo.

I heard Chris Perez signed a 5-year, $62 million deal.

Not really. But there's at least a 20% chance Peek won't read this far and freak out.

I bet we are building another state of the art rehab facility in Arizona to give those core players incentive to stay!

The giants signed Madison Bumgarner to an extension for 5 years 35 million.

It buys out 1 free agent year and his 4 arb years.

I believe Masterson is under control with arb this year and then 2013 and 2014.

Bumgarner is a relatively fair comparison for Mastrson in terms of years & team control. I would imagine that a contract like Bumgarners would have to be at least a starting point for an extension. It would cost more though because I would assume the Indians would want to buy out more than 1 free agent year.

Personally I think they should do it and extend Masty if they truly believe in him, they played it safe with CC and got burned. Injuries are going to happen but you gotta roll the dice (intelligently).

I wasn't referencing age as much as just control/contract status/mlb experience

plus i said "relatively fair"

The Indians may visit the topic of a Masterson extension after he signs for 2013, where they can have 2013 with the agreed-upon pre-arb figure, then get him for his final arb year and 2 FA years.

Westbrook got hurt at age 31. Masterson's first year of FA will be at age 30. You know the Indians don't want a repeat of that.

They might take their chances at a 3/33 type deal like they gave Westbrook. Masterson's worth more than that, but that's where the Indians might start. They'll be very careful with how long they lock themselves in and at what price.

You know, especially because we have to find out how good he really is.
