Hmmmm...considering Hafner will inevitably go down due to injuries, he'd be a good fit in the DH slot. But he's absolutely useless on the field, and I can't see them carrying two players who can only DH.

From a PR standpoint, he'd be a decent "name" pick-up, even if that name meant a lot more 7-10 years ago. Plus, he wouldn't cost us anything in a trade, which is good, considering our limited trade chips.

It would be a decent move, but a strange one, too. Better than standing pat, but I'm hoping for more. But what's that saying...wish in one hand, shit in the other....?

It makes sense from an offensive perspective but not from a defensive perspective, we would be carrying 2 DH's

Effin Hafner is just a crutch on this baseball team. Worst. Contract. EVER.

I guess when you bring about 95 guys to camp to battle for the open LF slot, and Shelley Duncan wins it, you bring in Vlad the Impaler.

He can't run, but his arm is still a cannon. LF at the Jake is all about angles and caroms - not foot speed. He'd be fine in LF at home at least. Sit him when Tomlin starts and move Brantley over and put Donald in CF.

My head hurts thinking of all the various platoons and line-ups we're gonna put out there.

I.e.- Kotchman at first unless facing a LH pitcher while Tomlin is on the mound...then Santana 1b, Vlad DH, Duncan LF, Donald CF. With Masterson, Lowe, Ubaldo or Rob pitching against a Lefty, Kochman 1b, Vlad LF, Donald CF, Mason C, Santana DH.

Provided that you have a manager who can handle the egos in the clubhouse, I think that you can get away with a shifting lineup while trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. A C/1B/DH/LF hydra of Santana/Marson/Kotchman/Duncan/Vlad with Brantley/Donald as LF/CF seems insane, but it can't hurt to try.

With having a few mill to burn after restructuring Rob's contract, it might be worth a shot.

That's been the problem with these Indians for most of the 21st century: Nobody has come around who can OWN a position, somebody who says "Left field is MINE!" Or, "First base is MINE, and if you try to take it away from me, you'd better be wearing kevlar!"

The only player who's done that in recent years is ACab last year at shortstop. So what does he do this spring? He comes to camp looking like a Cabbage Patch Kid.

PD article today says they would platoon Guerrero and Hafner.

Let me analyze this one: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

All the geniuses supposedly taking up residence in this front office, all the emphasis on defense and ground-ball pitchers, and they plan to stick themselves with two guys who do nothing but hit (and not all that well)?

We're looking at 68 wins.

The move would make sense except that Shelly Duncan is also on the same bench with Hafner. It'd be like having Dave Kingman, Gorman Thomas, and a 43 year old Ken Griffey, Sr. all on a 25 man roster. NO way do we pull the trigger on this.

Only major advantage I like is the name itself would put fans in the seats, especially if he was in left...which is nothing compared to RF at Prog. Just know how to pick balls up that dent the LF monster and it's really cake considering he still has an arm. The move is a step above when we got Mark Whitten back for one year and only b/c The Impaler is still capbable of getting on like Thome and hitting blasts. Whitten was strictly for defense, so that a 12 year old Manny Ramirez didn't have to play every single day in the field and/or Joey Belle was going to show up to the clubhouse with a gun.

What would we pay him? I cannot open the article at the moment.

Right. And they're now gunshy to make any big move after it.
