Sizemore Strains Back Running Away With $5M He Stole

Unread postby skatingtripods » Fri Feb 24, 2012 4:45 pm

Sizemore expected to open the year on the DL.

In other shocking news, I just got myself a glass of water and it was wet.

He hurt it two weeks ago. So he didn't even make it to camp healthy.

A lot of contracts have penalties for players who get injured off the field.

Never mind, these guys aren't that smart.

Does it count as an off the field injury if it's covered by the team? I'm not sure who would be responsible since Grady was cut and resigned. Would the Tribe be responsible for him being there or is it on Grady? It's neither here nor there really because they are paying him anyway. Just thought I'd ask.

The only blessing in all this is, if he were the same player he was five years ago, he'd be entering his walk year with us this year with practically no chance of resigning with us.

Nice guy...with his rapid decline and constant injuries, he's saving us the agony of going through all that.

They need to put him on the shelf until the all-star break. Make sure he's 100% before he comes back.

But they'll rush him back, he'll play good for a week or two, then try to play through injuries until they finally D.L. him.

Bump for more non-shocking news.

From Twitter:
#Indians manager Manny Acta said update is coming on Grady Sizemore tomorrow. When told that sounded "ominous", Acta did not respond.

If its successful it's a hell of a lot better than fusion. Just saying. 8-12 weeks recovery only means another month on top of that to get himslef back to game shape though. Mid-June before he's back IMO.

Tha's if all goes well.

Will Carroll ‏ @injuryexpert
What Grady Sizemore had done on his lower back is what Peyton Manning had done on his neck, twice, before the serious surgery.

Discectomy is removing the part of the disc that herniated/ruptured. The part that herniates tends to dessicate or dry out and can press upon nerves and the spinal column.

It's less serious and less invasive than fusion which is removing the entire disc and fusing cadaver bone or hip bone from the vertebrae below the fucked up disc to the vertebrae above the fucked up disc. Think of is at verterbral bypass if they have to fuse it.

No telling (as with Manning) if removing the herniated portion of the disc and not doing the fusion will work.

Issue with fusion is it takes longer to recover and you lose the ROM in that vertebral area.

I had c4-6 fusion. That was a good 12 week recovery. I'm older than Grady and lower back is tougher than neck so maybe it works out the same. I don't notice much in terms of lack of ROM in neck but I'm also not playing MLB CF either.

Suffice it to say they're going the conservative route on this issue first. If it works it likely works for short term (few years maybe) and he'll probably need fusion down the road. Hopefully after he retires.

Microdiscectomy was my 1st surgery this past May. Had it on a Tuesday, and was back to work the next Monday, restricted to desk/light duty of course. Two weeks after that, the disc re-herniated and I was back in for surgery about a month after the 1st one. I had a microdiscectomy and a lamenectomy that time. A month later, disc was re-herniated again. Finally gave up and had it fused and so far (knock on wood), the fusion is holding.

Now, Grady is in slightly better shape than I was when I had my 1st surgery, and the doc told me that only about 10% of these re-herniate. Hopefully Grady is in the 90% and is ok after the 1st surgery.

Like Peek said, if it comes to fusion, he's in trouble. That's a year on the shelf, minimum.

The laminectomy means they remove a piece of the actual vertebrae as well as the herniated portion of the disc. A lot of times the intent is to get in there and remvove the disc but they end up doing the laminectomy/removing a portion of the vertebrae because it gives them a better look at the disc and a better opportunity to get all of the herniated portion of the disc out.

Buster Onley just said on ESPN Tribe brass doesn't have a clue when/if Grady will be able to rehab. 8 - 12 weeks is a total guess.

I think it's time we start warming up the fat lady on Grady's career.

I'd say 8-12 is best case. A lot more often that things go wrong with the conservative attempt than go perfectly. Like Al's situation.

Mid June would be optimistic. Pretty much add 15 weeks from the time of each procedure and wipe it all out if it's fusion.

Great offseason so far...
1) Lost the #3 starter for at least 1/2 the season
2) Lost starting CF for at least 3 months...although you could argue he was never going to play anyhow
3) Lost Closer for Sprint Training and probably the first few weeks of season.

At least we have Cunningham, Slowey, Pie, F.Lewis, Accardo, Wheeler, Spilborghs to fill in the gaps...

Looking at the list of injuries we have had the last few years the question has to be asked:

Is there something not being done correctly by the Indians Medical staff? Or is it just really bad luck.

Must admit I am not in shock with Grady, very disappointing, lets just hope he can get on the field if we are in a pennant race come September, but in all honesty, if he plays 1 game its a bonus.

I hope his fiancee/wife knows he had a discectomy.

All kidding aside, I remember back in 2004 when it was announced that day he was getting the call up and in that night's starting lineup. Now he is washed up and not even 30.

Right. It also tends to give the nerve more room to breathe, so even if the herniation returns and is not as severe you might be able to get away without another surgery.

It sucks for Grady that he can't play, and it sucks for Grady that the door is closing on his career, but there's no way I could ever feel bad for the guy. He's not even 30, but he's making enough this year alone to last the rest of his life if he manages his money.

What I do feel is fucking pissed that they gave him that 1 year deal. Cap space down the drain on a guy that's been hurt his entire career here. What was their rationale there? Are there enough Grady's ladies coming to the games he's actually playing in to turn a profit on attendance? Gotta know when to part ways, they didn't, and now they're paying for it. Bought 1/5 of season tickets for the first time in my life and this sums up what I'm feeling so far into year 1: :pb:

Atleast we got something out of the Colon deal...wait...nevermind...we didn't get anything for BP or Lee.

Gotta know when to part ways, they didn't, and now they're paying for it. Bought 1/5 of season tickets for the first time in my life and this sums up what I'm feeling so far into year 1: :pb:

Got a buddy works security @ the ballpark , says Grady definitely has the numbers in the stands ;). Ladies come early and are escorted to different sections. He doesn't know if Grady gets volume discount on tix or not.

You'd think his back would be well conditioned by now. :hide:

That's good to know, being on the other side of the planet, you don't get that sort of information readily:)

Does the Cleveland Clinic have much to do with the Medical side of the squad?

The Cleveland Clinic has everything to do with everything. They are the Borg of the medical world, and they are taking over Northeast Ohio.

kidding. sorta

/I would be interested in hearing an educated answer. :hic:

I'm fairly certain that they handle every aspect of the Tribe's medical needs. When it comes down to who performs their surgery, it is usually the player's call, though. There are the known names who do a lot of specialized stuff, like Andrews and shoulders...
