There are many explanations that we can speculate on why they weren't in 2011, but I am of the mind that this year will be more like 2010 than 2011. Obviously, I could be wrong.

I have been under the impression the "league" has changed some things concerning FA/payrolls in that there will be a "basement" of which all teams will be forced to spend and be "above" thus forcing cheapskate teams/owners to at least appear to want to be competitive.

Can someone that knows something about that educate me so I may either continue my delusion the Browns will some day be competitive or just hook up to the Michael Jackson cocktail drip and go to sleep?

I get what you're saying and don't completely disagree (there's some interesting stats on kickers out there) but Phil Dawson has become a good kicker. There might not be an old timers league for boxing but like a fine wine Dawson has improved with age.

There may not be a point is prioritizing his spot on the team any more but I guess I see it as if PKs are so interchangeable why replace him with a Surrogate, I mean we already have him.

I have this discussion every football season with my friends. You take away the fact that he is local and circumvented the system to get here, what do you have? A few good seasons, some fond memories, one epic playoff game (that we won). For most that would be enough. But in the end, disappointment- not the awe shucks kind- the jumping off the bridge kind (imagine if these boards existed 25 years ago). He's a qb who could only lead a team so far and in the end was beaten by a better qb, and whose career and skills slowly.......diminished.

The Browns are the jumping point so two things come into play...first relying on the integrity of the Rams if we say "let us know what your best offer is we will try and beat it".

The second is having to beat whatever offer is out there...draft value chart wise ideally to go up 2 spots (roughly 1200 points) I would like to trade a first next year and a second this year (I would throw in a one of the 4th round picks for good measure)

Then you could flip the 22 into a first next year and second this year...last year the Patriots traded their first round pick (28) so the Saints could get Ingram and that is what they got back in return...a second last year and a first this year...

If something like that could be pulled off you would be able to move up 2 spots get your guy and essentially give up a 4th round pick and draft position in the 2nd this year and first next year but still keep your first and second round picks.

Probably great conversation and based on realistic trades but too good to be true.... I will stick to the best case scenario in my mind which is Manning to Skins..Flynn to Dolphins...stay put and strike oil... or is that a bigger pipe dream than the trades?

Sure someone can fall in love with him like the Falcons did with Julio Jones or Ditka did with Ricky Williams but honestly I wouldn't want to compete with those guys anyway because they would more than likely over paying like the Browns made the Falcons do last year and personally I wouldn't want to beat their offers and give too much.

Some say the Seahawks could be players but if you look up and down the league, most teams have either a good veteran or a young guy still being evaluated...biggest threats will be Dolpins,Redskins, and maybe the Seahawks anybody else would be shocking the world to make a move like that.

Never really seen a team do that (that I can remember)so I don't think so. Even the Chargers didn't really do that because they actually got a QB in the trade. Manning was drafted then traded for Rivers and a ransom but this would be a different scenario altogether.

If they pick RG3 everyone will know why and they immediately loose leverage because they won't have a choice but to trade one of those young QBs. Now, if it is one of those predetermined things like they do in the NBA where they draft players specifically for a trade with another team then we are entering a new era in the NFL. (I would love it, how much fun is that?)
