Experienced coordinator, likely to be better than Shurmur. I kinda wanted Mike Sherman, but it also probably increased the chance that the Browns go Tannehill at #22, which the more I watch of him the less I'd like.

Just hope he can work on his people skills.

Gotta love Shur!!! stating that he will only let a guy he trusts call plays then hiring a guy whose entire OC experience involved not calling the plays!

This should end well!

Nothing says experience OC like a guy that sat on the sidelines and let Andy Reid do all the OCin!

Will make it easier to keep those guys and not worry about the power struggle when SHUR is out in 2014 and Holmgren descends to the sidelines.

Was his Vikings offense THAT much better than Shurmer's offense this year???

I guess Holmgren thinks the answer is to hire more puppets with no track record. ::doh::

IIRC, Childress sports the same "deer in the headlights" stare as Shurmur. Must be a pre-req along with agent representation to land a gig with this storied franchise.

Was wondering if Chilly had an OC while in MN? Did he call any plays as HC in MN? I know he didn't in Philly.

2010 was an all around disaster which wasn't all his fault. They had that Wrangler guy at QB and tho it worked great in 09; time finally took its toll.

Hearing reports that SHUR MUR will still be calling plays. This is not good.

See above. Childress didn't call plays before this under Reid either.

Ex-headcoaches are my favorite kind of coordinators. Especially when there's little chance of them leaving for another HC opportunity.

Soooo...I like the hire.

ESPN.com AFC North Blogger Jamison Hensley (whose other part-time job is likely as a butler) does not like the hire...

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_ ... for-browns

Just a sampling...

The problem with Childress is his track record with offenses. In the eight years that Childress has been a head coach or offensive coordinator in the NFL, his offenses have ranked in the bottom half of the league five times.

The disturbing part is he's only been an NFL playcaller for one season. The result? The Vikings finished 23rd in yards and 26th in points (17.6 per game) in 2006 before Childress passed those duties over to offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell the next season. Childress didn't call the plays in his three seasons as the Eagles' offensive coordinator (Andy Reid held that role) and he didn't call the plays in his final four seasons with the Vikings.

It doesn't matter what his track record is.

He knows the WCO
He worked under Reid
He is friends with Walrus
He is represented by Bob LaMonte

That is all you need to be a part of this confederacy of morons.

Ah, cherry picking to try and make your point. Gotcha.

I don't like the guy much myself, but he has experience, he's had some success, and at the absolute minimum is familiar with all the parties and is in lockstep schematically.

But I agree that this is probably a non-factor.

Hire an offensive coordinator that's not going to call the plays.

Wonderful.

Allow Shurmer to do it, even though his play calling offenses have never yielded a single season over 19 points a game.

Fantastic.

And, allow Shurmer this giant responsibility even though he's proven there are already too many for him to handle.

Excuse the language, but these fucks are fucking fucks.

Another bullshit season on the horizon. Go get em' Walrus, ya arrogant prick.

They gonna let Bob LaMonte run out of the tunnel with the team?

At least Shurmur and Jauron don't look like a child molestor.

Richie Kotite still out there? Get him to coach special teams. He can't be worse than the nobody we brought in to replace the best special teams coach in the league last year.

The only way it'd be worth having 3 HCs on the staff simultaneously is if 2 of them were Wyche and Glanville.

Jauron's a solid DC. To even remotely compare him to Childress is a joke.

He's the one person on staff other than Heckert I can actually trust in knowing what's he's doing.

If you're that good, you don't coach for 7 different teams in 9 years. It's that simple.

Same thing everyone said at the start of season three of the Crennel reign.

Outside of a couple good draft picks by Heckert, unless I've been missing something, Holmgren and his boy SHUR haven't done anything else that should earn them the benefit of the doubt en route to going 7-25 and hiring all the Walrus's drinking buddies that have been failures elsewhere.

Also just a sampling:

If I were Shurmur, I would rely on Childress' advice but not his play-calling ability.

Which is apparently exactly what he's going to do.

Brad: What the hell are we doing here, Shur? We gotta get out of this town!
Shur: Oh yeah, and go where? Where are we gonna go?
Brad: I'll tell you where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talking about a little place called Cleveland.
Shur: Oh, I don't know, Brad. The French are assholes.

Yeah. And it was apparent with Grimmace heading into season 2 as well.

And heading into year three of The LaMonte Era.

Maybe we'll get lucky and the Feds will bust Bob Lamonte.

Either that or get Action News 19 puppets to show what's going on in Berea today.

Just out of curiosity, Ye Who Be Flipping Out, who was it exactly you wanted them to hire (since it obviously wasn't The Human Muppet)?

Or were you just waiting to flip out on them no matter who they hired? Or if they didn't hire anyone at all?

Or maybe you could care less who they hired and just couldn't pass up a good ol' fashioned lynching?

Not flipping out, just not enjoying the scent of patsy.

And to answer the question, anyone with enough cache to be able to call the friggin' plays.

I have no confidence in Shurmer's ability to run an offense, therefore I have no confidence in his ability ot call plays. Again, looking histrically at Shurmer's record shows us that, well, the guys offenses don't really score points. Here, there, or anywhere.

I think, that what I want isn't gonna happen under this regime. Pretty clear it's not what you've done, it's who you know.

Holmgren, as of now, has done zero at the position he curently holds, anywhere in the NFL. Pat Shurmer was exactly on zero radars before his buddy came a callin'

And, I'm way too far down apathy's path to "flip out" over any of this shit anymore. This 12 year heater has taken something out of me. But really, I'm allowed to call things as I see them, and bring along some facts to support my feeling of gloom.
I'm still sitting here with a coach who's in over his head, and a GM who thinks he's won 7 Super Bowls at the helm.

I don't begrudge anyone OK with it. I'm not.
