Great idea on re-watching Season 4 right before Seasn 5 kicks off. Hell...I may watch all four seasons. Might be worth it to see "The Jet Set" again. BTW...got to see the drop dead gorgeous girl who played Joy topless in "Kill the Irishman". Rah!

I can easily see them writing Betty off the show - she has no point now than the occasional appearance as The Bitchy Ex-Wife, and everyone can do with less of them.

If I'm the ex-prod, I have her husband be a Russian spy that has to kill her b/c she finds his decoding device, then cuts her up and sticks her in his trunk, driving her to Baltimore where he dumps her carcass in a bus station trash can that gets emptied 4 months later, far too decomposed for identity.

I can't see them writing Betty off the show. Not only has she become one of the truly great female heels, if Draper is forced to be with the kids non-stop, it hurts his character too.

I've been giving this show another shot via Netflix this weekend. I'm having the same problem I had the first time and with the later seasons of Breaking Bad, the characters are just so unlikable. I have no vested interest in any of them. So basically i'm watching a show that is expertly shot with a stellar set.... but the characters seem static and completely devoid of any redeeming qualities.

And that makes me ambivalent.

Season 3 finale tonight (sandwiched in between hoops somewhere)

Little over a week to get through season 4.

I like the show. Not sure I would have made it through the first season without the recommendations here and being able to watch them in short order. Started off a bit slow and boring. Has picked up steam nicely throughout though and it sounds like 4 is even better, which is nice.

Maybe it is just me and based on watching them so quickly...but is there a shitload of things that happen, do not get resolved but they never go back to? Had I known I might have tracked them all and made up my own answers.

Season 4 is amazing. I too watched in like a week. Not against a time deadline line you ... once I got to the Don/Peggy Ali/Liston fight episode (amazing episode), I just couldn't stop watching.

Season 4 is right up there with the season of The Wire where the dudes are hiding the bodies in the walls of the projects as the greatest season of any show ever IMO.

You can take a little more time. DVR the first episode. That will give you an extra week to catch up. Hell, if you're pressed for time DVR the first 2 episodes.

There's no way I could make it through an entire season in a week, and you've got 300% more kids than me.

Can you give an example? Cause I don't really remember anything that important that was introduced but never resolved.

I wish I could. Kind of why I was asking, just to see if anyone else had that same feeling. If there was unresolved issues, they were minor things that would normally be forgotten going a week between episodes possibly. Maybe I missed the resolution? More of a feeling going through 3 seasons in short time than anything else.

A lot of issues stand unresolved, but all are visited later (see Joan's hubby raping her, which isn't resolved yet but isn't closed).

Weiner is insane, he revisits most everything.

I'm sure some small things are let go, but the majority are not.

Mad Men sucks..... yeah I said it. It's devoid of any characters worth giving a shit about, the pacing is beyond slow, and it has nothing of substance to say about the time period it portrays. If you're going to make a show that insists on beating the viewer over the head with cheap cliches, try to give the characters story arcs that actually go somewhere. It's a completely vapid show. A banal soap opera that arrogantly assumes it's showing the audience an realisitc portrayal of that period in American history. Only through the most narrow of lenses.... and only if you enjoy being force fed stereotypes time and time again. I get it, the men are adulterous, sexist, racist, homophobic creeps who drink too much and smoke INDOORS. The women are even more laughable. And then they wrap this steaming pile of arrogant, overrated shit in the aura of glitz and glamour.

"But you see, beneath that is a dark and seedy underbelly of the beast" Amazing, fanboy, you've got your finger on the pulse. But really, who am I too question the opinion of 5 million TV critics who live with their heads firmly jammed up their own asses? THEY'RE EXPERTS IN TV..... and i'm not.

I'm sure "I don't get it" or "I'm just not looking deep enough".....or any of the other plethora of self absorbed sayings I see tossed in the general direction of anyone who will not bow and acknowledge the inherent greatness of this show.

Fuck it, i'll just watch The Wire on DVD.

I watched all of Mad Men just before season 3 CDT and I went in thinking the critics were dicks and there was no way a show on AMC could be mentioned in the same breathe as The Wire.

I came out of season 3 thinking damn, this is really good. After season 4 it earned its way to being with The Wire and it earned it on its own. I wanted my damndest to hate it.

Don't do it. It's a well done British soap opera essentially. Like and old school and cooler version of Dallas. I fear for children's lives if you give it a whirl.

And if you don't like Breaking Bad, which paces as slowly as Mad Men but at least gives you gore I could have told you to not bother with Mad Men.

I really liked Breaking Bad, but I think it went sideways with the plot and they made all the characters scumbags. I understand why they did it, the drug dealer world is populated by really awful people..... I just want to root for Walt.

That's the thing. Without this thread, I am not sure if I go through with Season 2 of Mad Men. And I consider quitting in season 3.

But it seems like every episode gets better than the last. Which bodes well for 5-7 (as long as 4 is as epic as everyone indicates).

Predictions:

Draper never got married, and he officially hits mid life crisis (scary thought) this season. Faye gets back in the picture, yet he refuses to commit to the woman that can reign him in.

Betty - either shes miserable political wife looking for somn on the side, or fighting off wanting to get the band back together with Don and the kids.

Joan - stiff husband will be killed in Vietnam, single mom now, Roger storyline heats back up as well as her relationship with Layne, who is taking a professional liking to her.

Sterling - dies this season. What's left after dude from Lucky Strike made him dress up as Santa then cut him loose.

Cooper - didn't retire, then he will, then he comes back when Roger dies.

Peggy - battles between corporate life and hippie buddies as Nam intensifies.

Sally - Drugs, late sixties complicate things for her. Note that Woodstock takes place 78 miles from their home in April 1969. Affinity, relationship with dad continue to get better as she rejects bitch mom as she enters teens.

One episode in and Megan Draper is already on the path to being as crazy as Betty Draper. Can officially move the Draper over/under to at least 4. 40th birthday also set the midlife crisis theme in place. I fully expect Draper to be more of a reckluse than ever this season, complicated by the fact he's now working with his wife.

Joan is gonna bang Layne to secure her position with the company. That one seems to be a lock too. As does the continues focus on the Layne "horny little English boy" plot line.

Pete/Roger feud should be epic this season. Just gonna be relentless with those two. The Peggy/Megan drama is coming as well, groundwork laid for that last night as well.

Previews for next week's episode looked good. No January Jones in the two hour premiere. Could be a sign that the Betty storyline will obviously be there, but won't be in the forefront as they focus on Draper trashing another marriage.
