The district union I negotiate for recently made HUGE concessions on wages and health care...Why? Because we understand the plight of the taxpayer....we didn't need Johnny jerk off to champion any bill MAKING us do it, we did it because we understand....there's your greedy union thugs for ya....it works if its left alone.

The agreement had EVERYTHING to do with the fact that our district is in financial trouble and NOTHING to do with Issue 2.

In full disclosure it DID have a bit to do with pulling and end around the Merit Pay (Budget)Bill which, as you will all see soon, is a complete train wreck.

Issue 2 is going to be really damn close. probably no more 1-1.5%. I think Columbus will vote it down, and I assume Cleveland will too. I live in a heavily Republican area and I see way more "Vote No" signs than "Vote Yes".

With teachers now paying an increased percentage of their own health insurance premiums, and an increased contribution to their own pension funds, many school districts have "found money" that used to go to these costs, and can now be used for things pertaining to educating kids....you remember the kids?....like buildings...books...supplies...hiring more teachers...reducing class sizes, etc...all the things that unions who fought the reforms SAID they were concerned about.

Supporters of similar reforms (and I'm one of them) should try harder to quantify these kinds of savings to school districts at the time these types of reforms are proposed (or voted on) to help taxpayers and parents realize that there can be tangible benefits to their schools when these reforms are implemented.

Though picking off the first bullet point doesn't do the thing total justice. They also point out many of the fringe benefits are rarely included in BLS statistics benefit data. Or that public teachers make more then their equvivilent private school counter parts. Or the job security. Or other stuff that make me feel they should give back some. Redistribute some of that wealth back to tax payers.
