Q&A with Josh Judy of the Cleveland Indians

Unread postby JoshJudy » Fri Oct 21, 2011 9:54 am

Cleveland Fans,

Josh Judy will be holding a Q&A with you all right here on the message board. Josh will be on (using this account) on Monday and Tuesday at 8pm to answer your questions. On Monday, he will also be doing a live analysis of the pitching match-up during the World Series game.

Josh has had an eventful year bouncing between the majors and minors, so there should be plenty of good discussion topics. We expect this to be a big event, and we will be back for additional Q&As if it is.

Not going to be online Monday and Tuesday night? Feel free to post your questions beforehand. We will be running the Q&A in this thread. Josh will try to answer any questions in here.

Thank you all, and be sure to bookmark JoshJudyBlog.com for next season.

Love the blog, it really gives you a great insight into how pitchers attack hitters in key situations. Most fans never get to see anything that in-depth on the mental side of the game. A couple of questions:

1) How often do you shake off your catcher? If you have a particular pitch/location in mind, do you automatically stick to that if the catcher puts down a different sign? Or do you pretty much let him call the game?

2) Who actually calls pitches for the Indians most of the time? Is it the catcher or the coaching staff? What about in Columbus?

3) Who do you prefer to throw to, Marson or Santana and why? Obviously not looking for you to throw a teammate under the bus or anything, just wondering who you (and the staff) like better.

4) Who is your least-favorite team in the division?

I'm sure I'll come up with more before Monday. Thanks for doing this.

Thanks Josh. I enjoy your blog. And I'm glad you responded to my request. Welcome to the best C-town boards. Swerb and company do a pretty good job of keeping the idiots out.

Looking forward to Monday. I think we all have a hundred questions.

This is great. Appreciate it!

* What are your thoughts on Belcher leaving?

* Your impressions of Radinsky? Doesn't seem like you two were with the same clubs at the same time in the minors- but you have worked with him since your call-up this year?

* What specifically is he good at as he handles pitchers? What was Belcher good at?

Hi Josh, I have 2 Q's for you.

1.What do you do differently to set yourself up to pitch to a lefty from a righty?
2. Being a rookie you haven't pitched to alot of these guys, what do you do to prepare
yourself? Do ballplayers watch film as football players do?

@ 08leogirl.. i set myself up mentally by wanting to attack the inner half of the plate with my hard stuff and then go with soft breaking balls or changeups away when im facing a lefty.
being a rookie gives the veteran hitters the edge because i dont know their weaknesses and it makes it hard to attack them not knowing what they are comfortable and not comfortable hitting.

What plays into the decision to attack a hitter when you are ahead 0-2, or use that pitch to set him up?

@pup
when i have a guy down 0-2 it depends on nhow i got there. if i got there with fastballs and he hasnt swung then i might elevate a fastball or break off a slider in the dirt to get him to chase. the decision comes down to the pitcher and catcher and how we got the hitter down 0-2

Give us an idea of your conditioning program as it pertains to your arm. Starters typically build up their arms in spring training and then have a routine they move through between starts once the season starts.

How does that differ for a reliever from a spring training, season and post season perspective given your appearances are sporadic as opposed to every five days.

Also, how important is that first cup of coffee you had this past season in terms of building on it for next season and beyond.

Thanks.

From reading your blog, it seems that you are responsible for calling your own pitches. This kind of flies in the face of everything we learned from Bull Durham.

How is it decided who calls the pitches? Does it make a difference who is catching? Do catchers ever get pissed when you shake them off?

@peeker643
great question. typically a reliever needs to be prepared to go 1 to 2 innings so in the offseason i do a lot of conditioning and leg lifting because my stamina and legs carry me through the season. as reliever during the season our conditioning is based on quick movements and volume. so we typically run more sprints and sprint and go's like a shuttle run, then maybe one day a week we do distance.
that first taste of the big leagues just made me want to work even harder to stay with cleveland. it's one thing getting to the big leagues but staying is what i must work my butt off in order to stay.

catchers sometimes do get pissed that we shake off. there are sometimes when we are thinking something different. the relationship is a love/hate one but it works and you find common ground and try and get outs.

It seems to me like the more scouting that is available, pitchers start to get in trouble trying to pitch to a hitters weakness instead of their own strength. How do you balance being prepared with having too much information?

its a tough thing to balance. there is a ton of information on every hitter and pitcher for that matter. so trying to take in the information trying to use the info that works for you and your strengths. sometimes we walk a fine line trying to balance that combo.

1. As you moved from high school, to college, and up through the pros do pitching coaches just tweak things here and there, or was it a delivery overhaul?

2. Did you hear the same coaching philosophy as you moved through the Tribe organization, or was it unique to each pitching coach at each stop?

the lifestyle is that of a king. you don't have to carry your bags anymore, there are enough clubhouse personel that pick up after you and all your mess. the food is prepared by a chef everyday. if there is anything you need all you do is ask and its done asap for you. the travel is great, you fly charter everywhere.

for the msot part the pitching coaches just tweak things here and there and it usually doesnt differ from coach to coach within the Tribe. one coach may see this and that and try and help and they usually consult one another( coaches ) so its just minor tweaks usually
