2011 World Serious - Rangers v. Cards

Unread postby bookelly » Wed Oct 19, 2011 7:51 pm

Thought we'd want a thread for this. I'm pulling for the Cards.

Let's hope its a good series. I'm looking for a ton of offense. Could be very long games.

Rangers.

And can we talk about this home field advantage bullshit as well. Enough with all-star games. Select the all-pro teams, give the season awards, but get rid of the all-star game.

I think it is totally wrong a Wild Card team can get home field advantage over a division winner. They should be disadvantaged as much as possible.

I think Rangers will win in 6.

Hate McCarver. He's not a friend of Cleveland, either.

Pulling for the Cards because it would really irritate Cincinnati and Chicago. ha

Gotta love the mute button and ESPN radio. Postseason/WS games are so boring while Buck-n-McCarver are in the booth. With the games starting as late as they are. They wonder why ratings are down.

And who green-lights Pierzyniski? Eric Karros is a dud as well. I could handle Buck if the color guy wasn't so awful. I fell asleep 2 innings in.

Wow- Tim McCarver looks ancient.

Closer to retirement or death every day. Great news for televised baseball fans.

When I turned the game on I thought Bob Barker was sitting in.

As far as announcers go, we've been complaining about guys like Buck and McCarver forever. Why can't they let some of the better team announcers split up the games?

Who wouldn't love tonhear Scully work a couple of games. Maybe Kuiper and his partner one. Blyleven. Whoever is considered at the top of their games?

Might even pull in some more viewers from whosever market is working.

I'm a genius.

Nothing better than low scoring World Series games. Every pitch is life and death. A great defensive play is even greater than it normally would be. Chicks can dig the long ball all they want, but THIS is baseball at its best.

So much for my prediction of massive offense. But you gotta love these games.

/Buck is fine. McCarver...you just have to go with it. He's not the worst ever, we could have Hawk. And yes, Vin would be ideal, but he works alone, which would mess with protocol. And lest the God of baseball smote me with this statement, Vin has lost a step in recent years. Sometimes he trips up over names and gets a little 'senior'. But he is still at %85, and %85 of Vin is %190 of anyone else. Besides the weather and the girls, he's one of LA's real joys.

I've been rooting for the Rangers since they're being in the WS has totally messed with Red Sux fans and their feelings of being entitled blowing up. However D-Pronk, yours is a kinder, gentler choice for picking a team. Now I'm torn: tick off Red Sux fans or root for Westbrook? :gah:

Well I'M a "chick" (more like old hen ;-) ;) ) but I completely enjoy a pitchers' battle. Even better when a pitcher wins a 1-0 game for himself by driving in the run!

Well except when it came to tv broadcasts as he teamed with Joe Garagiola while they did games for NBC.

Rangers play so aggressive ... I respect it. Game 1, send Kinsler and he gets gunned, contributing to a loss. Down 1-0 in the 9th, Kinsler gets on ... they send him again. Manufacture the winning two runs with just two hits.

I think the Cards bullpen is gonna continue to wear down. I think that win last night was the series for the Rangers, who I expect to come home and get their bats cooking down in Arlington.

Painful to watch Hamilton with no lower half just standing up there flicking balls to left field. Rangers are going to need someone to step up and help carry the offense like Cruz did in ALCS if they're going to win it.

What pushes Ogando just past The Tavarez Line for me in terms of sheer ugliness is that Frank Beamer-like growth coming out of the side of his head.

You'd think in the MLB health plan they'd have a lance clause. :spar:

Awesome.

Ump looked pretty impressed too.

I used to think that Pete Rose was the best ballplayer I'd ever see. Then it was Maddux, then Bonds. But none of them even come close to Pujols. He's kinda...Ruthian.

Holy shit. If you didn't watch that Game 6 you missed what may have legitimately been one of the best baseball games of my lifetime given what was at stake.

Absolutely unreal.

Rangers are 1 strike away TWICE only to see it slip away. Mesa'd two times.

And a kid from St. Louis w/a 2-out, 2-strike, 2-run triple to tie it in the 9th and then win it with a bomb in extras?

Can't write that shit.

One of the most dramatic baseball games I have ever seen.
But also the sloppiest World Series game I have seen.

I think that may have been the greatest baseball game I've ever seen. My God. I can't wait for tonight.

David Freese. That has to be the single most heroic big game performance in baseball history, right? A triple in the bottom of the ninth to cap a comeback and send it into extras. Then a walkoff HR in the bottom of the 11th to win it? Are you serious? Then the mobbing, the disrobing, the pandemonium in the stands ... all happening in one of America's best baseball cities at quarter to one in the morning on a cold late October night.

So many epic subplots and plays in this game. Had to wake up at like 5 AM to get in the office this morning. I was laying in bed wired after this one ended for like an hour. In awe of what I saw last night.

First game seven in nine years tonight. Cards going with Carp on short rest. Ron "I'm not changing shit now" Washington will go with Matt Harrison.

David Freese now 24-61 (.393) in the playoffs. Seven doubles, five HR, and 19 RBI.

Napoli with three walks and two hits in his six plate appearances last night. Picked Holliday off 3B. And played through a rolled ankle. 10 RBI in the World Series.

Pujols, outside of his 5-6, 3 HR game ... is 1-17 with 0 RBI in the other 5 games.

That rolled ankle could be big tonight. It's easier to play through the pain when the adrenaline's going and you can keep that baby moving and stretched out.

He may wake up this morning with an ankle as big as a softball and as stiff as a board. May take a while to get that thing stretched back out, if he even can.

It looked bad when it happened. Didn't seem to be bothering him later in the game. But you're right ...

I'd be interested in knowing the data on teams that lose a late/9th inning lead in game 6, and how they fare in game 7.

Cause this is one of those instances where we automatically say, "No way the Rangers come back from this one...." And we'll recall Puckett or Dave Henderson sending Donnie Moore spiraling.

But the Reds came back from Fisk. Wonder if it really makes a difference. Hopefully Bill James is registred here and posts the data.

Can't recall a game quite like that. Horribly played until the 7th, than fasten the seatbelt excitement.

I wonder if Texas will hate Neftali as much as Cleveland hates Jose.

And I'd watch a game 7 of Scrabble.

So, did anything good happen in the game last night? I was watching Terra Nova.

The only thing that could top that game 6 would be Jack Morris vs. Don Larson tonight.

Yes. I'm still partial to the 15 run comeback against Seattle, but this was clearly the biggest stage. You gotta think the Cards will be riding Carpenter and Uncle Mo, and home field advantage.

Bullies gassed, and Ogando turning into a lumpy pumpkin at the worst time possible. I was sure Nap-oh-lee's ankle was busted.

I got a feeling the Rangers get it done tonight. I just think it's their year.

Key thing to remember tonight - Rangers haven't lost back to back games in TWO MONTHS. And while Carp is Carp, this is a pretty damn good Texas lineup getting their third look at him in ten days.

I think tonight is a high scoring game too. 7-6. Or 6-5. Rangers find a way to get it done.

Both teams are tighter than a Magnificat girls *bleep*. It's gonna be Little League all night. 12-10 Cards.

If the top of the 1st is any indication of how the game will be I suggest we all pull up a comfy chair, stock up on plenty of :pop: and grab a generous supply of :hic: Fun Stuff! Funny thing is there are a lot of people up here, when I've asked if they're watching the World Series, answer with "no". Guess it isn't being played unless the guys from Beantown aren't in it. sheesh...

swerb wrote:...David Freese. That has to be the single most heroic big game performance in baseball history, right? A triple in the bottom of the ninth to cap a comeback and send it into extras. Then a walkoff HR in the bottom of the 11th to win it? Are you serious?...

And the fact that he's a "local" who grew up watching the Cards makes it even more special.
