But when I heard Holmgren refer to Cleveland and the Browns as 'they' yesterday on the way home it sent up some red flags.
Just wondered what others thought of him saying he didn't plan on spending 10 years here and that he wanted to get an organization in place so "they" can feel good about where the organization is.
Is it much ado about nothing or is it a clear sign that Holmgren isn't fully invested in this gig and this franchise?
We can be a bit....umm...defensive about our teams and town so I understand getting in the car and hearing nothing but this stuff on the radio. Does it matter at all if Holmgren leaves us with Heckert and a foundation (that's IF for those wanting to talk about the state of the team today which this thread isn't about)?
I think he made a mistake in the words he chose. And the 'face' of the franchise, especially with an absentee owner who doesn't seem to care, shouldn't go down that road IMO.
End of the day, IMO, it makes no difference if the team improves and progresses but in the short term he just made a bad situation worse.

Wow. Living in Houston I'm not up on the latest controversy. Link to a podcast from the Seattle station?
I am so demoralized at this point that I am too numb to be shocked. But I am pretty fucking far from OK. Like this guy is doing us some type of favor?
Well, if that's truly his attitude, and we don't receive some type of explanation or clarifiction, then fuck him and his shitty HC selection and his WCO. He can take them and his fat fucking ass and go coach the Dolphins.
On how long Holmgren plans on staying in his current position: “It’s hard to tell for sure, but I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be 10 years. We still have our home in Seattle. And like I said, the kids are there, the grandkids are there. And I don’t think they are going to be moving anywhere too soon. So our vision is to kind of get back to that area at some point. Exactly when that is (I don’t know). I would like to see improvement here and lay the foundation here so they can feel good about their team again before I make any changes at all.”

Incidentally, he is speaking at 1pm today to the Cleveland media from what I hear. Not a formal press conference but whatever....

Maybe a bigger deal that he did a long interview with a Seattle station before addressing our local media with all that's gone on lately.

"They", meaning the fans. You know, the fucking insane group of bridge jumpers that will just lose their shit if Holmgren doesn't march forward and soothe their souls. I wouldn't want to associate with them either if I were Mike (or me).
Lerner is the owner who doesn't really want the responsibility of being owner, so he made Holmgren the de facto owner. Holmgren is the president who doesn't really want the responsibility of being president, so he made Heckert the de facto president.
So maybe Holmgren wants to quit and retire in the Pacific Northwest (who could blame him?). What does he actually do, anyway? Heckert is the one that really runs things. Holmgren himself has done exactly this:
1. Hired Heckert (good move).
2. Insisted on drafting Colt McCoy (questionable move).
3. Hired Shurmur (still way up in the air but looks bad right now).
So if he leaves and leaves the team to Heckert, I'm not sure what's lost. Except maybe McCoy and Shurmur, who weren't Heckert choices.
It is clear that Holmgren is just a well-paid figurehead that is already in semi-retirement. The only real benefit he can bring to this team is to step up and coach it. Otherwise, stay, go, doesn't matter much to me. He can be a figurehead from a house on the Puget Sound too.

I believe that he's been going on that show regularly in Seattle for years and years now b/c the guy's his friend. Him doing that show is hardly a new thing.

peeker643 wrote:Agree on all of that.
And in fact, I HATE when people say "we" when speaking of the Browns or their sports teams. I.E.- "We need to win this game today" or "We kicked their asses last time we played".
But Holmgren, reluctantly or not, IS part of the organization. He is "we" and has the right and maybe the obligation to speak on the organization's behalf and represent the thoughts and hopes of the fans (IMO).
And if he doesn't want to associate with 'them' that's fine too. If that's the case then shut the fuck up. But going on Seattle radio and talking doesn't help him or the organization in any way. Shutting up and shutting down is fine. But why talk Cleveland football in Seattle and not in Cleveland?
That was a bad move and opened up another can of shit. Obviously. If nothing else it caused him a headache he could have avoided and one he could have saved those of us who can't avoid it on the radio, at the water cooler, etc.

Again, there are plenty of media people here who would serve him softballs and paint him in the best light. It would be the right move from a PR standpoint regardless of whether he has a buddy in Seattle. It's worrisome to me that he doesn't either understand that or doesn't care.
I don't care what he says. I don't care if he says anything. But saying something and saying it there instead of here is just not a smart move.
I care about the guy in charge making smart moves.

No one says he has to stop at all. But going on there when he's been asked to go on here is bad form when you work here and te lemmings here pay your salary (or make it possible anyway).
Christ, he went in front of the media today. Why? Had he done that last week there wouldn't be anyone, right or wrong, saying shit about it.
It was dumb. It was a move that anyone could have seen causing more ripples here. Why do that when it was foreseeable? Call it dumb, call it nothing, call it disrespectful, call it whatever. But it made waves here whether you want to acknowledge it or not when it was avoidable.

Well, I am not a smart man. And the second I heard it I knew it was going to make waves. Anyone with any connection to this team and fan base, be it media, fans or whatever, should have known in this climate it was going to make waves.
Right or wrong, the small craft advisory was there to be seen by all.

Which goes back to my "not caring" argument.
With this team and this fan base and this climate, everything makes waves. You say something, it makes waves. You don't say anything, it makes waves. You say it to the wrong person, in the wrong context, in the wrong tone, wearing the wrong shirt or the wrong hat, it makes waves.
Sports and sports media is big business now, and with that you get the good and the bad. The bad being the kind of scrutiny which makes the Kardashians jealous.
If you're Mike Holmgren and your team is losing, there is no right way to walk this tightrope. Best you can do is not give a fuck what the fans think and do the best job you can to build a winner. That's the only thing that'll shut them up anyway.

Well, that's nice of him, but I'm pretty sure that if he hasn't achieved some success by the end of his 5 year contract, most people won't want him to stay.
I guess it's good that it shows that he's dedicated or whatever, but, like I said before, I'm not sure how much he does anyway (and that's not necessarily a bad thing, since I'd much rather have Heckert handling the personnel stuff).

Meh, that was damage control when he said he wouldn't likely be around 10 years from now. Wouldn't expect a 63 yr old to be around in his early 70's anyway but I think it clearly points out that he's aware of the effect his comments on Seattle radio may have had here in terms of people wondering about his 'commitment'.

I would guess you're right. I was just trying to say that no one cares if he's willing to stay (whether or not he really is) beyond 5 years if he hasn't already gotten it done by then.

I guess if you look at his record in each place that looks about right. He advised it took 5 years to build the Seahawks but an additional year or two to find the right QB.
