Hater or no, he makes a good point. That seems like a lot of cheese for a young veteran the Eagles were willing to part with along with Sheldon Brown for a couple of mid-round picks. Especially a linebacker with 6.5 career sacks in 6 seasons.

Disagree, on short term contracts guys are far more likely to see the money. Especially an extension, you don't throw an extension at someone for a few years that you don't expect to contribute for the duration.

I've heard that they way they're doing this is basically re-doing this year and tacking on 3 years (or whatever), so if you include this year the deal was essentially 4 years 18 mil, with a nice fat chunk of the guaranteed money tacked onto this year's salary cap (since they were so far under).

So they lock him up for three more years with most of the cap hit coming this year when we're way under the cap, meaning in future years we'll have a solid starter in place at a minimal cap hit, freeing up money to improve other areas.

I'm down with that. Especially since we gave up either a 4th or 5th round pick, depending on how you want to look at it, for a guy who will probably start over 60 games and who the DC is "very, very happy" with.

Cuz you're footing the bill? When this Gocong signing keeps them from signing someone better, then we have a legit beef. We don't know the structure of the contract, we don't know his cap number.

As long as the team continues to improve and Gocong makes a contribution, it feels like making a big deal out of this might represent someone who is predisposed to despise any move made by the team/regime regardless what it is.

Wondering how much the fact that they have to be at the minimum salary floor at the end of the year (as opposed to beginning of next season) has on some of these moves.

As stated, depends on the terms and the guaranteed money. Something really team friendly would be fine if Gocong is a depth signing.

Grossi's response to a question about the Gocong extension:

Gocong was drafted by Philadelphia in 2003 when GM Tom Heckert was VP of player personnel and Pat Shurmur was an Eagles assistant coach. I think they, along with defensive coordinator Dick Jauron, think Gocong fits perfectly in their defensive system and, at 27, is still an ascending player.

Good point about having to get to the salary cap floor by next season. That may have something to do with it.

Gocong started 47 of his last 48 games with the Eagles, who were one of the better teams in the NFL during that time, with 28 wins and two playoff appearances. I think that fact alone calls into question the credibility of anyone who refers to him as a shitty player.
