Can we discuss ESPN?

Unread postby Triple-S » Thu Sep 22, 2011 1:14 pm

Not in a whining sense about the lack of coverage about our teams, or the bias against the Buckeyes.

But, Yeah, this is pretty questionable:

Image

NO ONE DENIES THIS. (saw this on KSK)

The Simmons piece intrigues me, don't get me wrong. But it's an interesting thing with the whole brand of ESPN. I realize in the business that they're in, their goal is to make money off of Ad revenue and to get viewers to spend money for said clients to produce more ad revenue. But is it possible that any sort of integrity they have has pretty much been evaporated?

Just in between recent events such as the Longhorn Network and it's impact on the sports world, and ESPN's dealings with the Mike Leach fiasco this past season, has really made me question the brand.

And on another thought, is it possible that NBC Sports or one of the other networks finally finds a way to create itself as a viable competitor or as competition to the WWL?

Go read Chad Millman's (new ESPN Mag Runner) Facebook. He is stepping up and answering any and all reasonable questions about this.

Stepping up and explaining his logic behind the cover and what people had to say about it.

I could care less, it's an interesting concept that drew a shit ton of eyes and discussion, which is never bad for a seriously struggling magazine.

That all said, you do realize that you've mentioned everything else here at least twice already?

Yeah they are an entertainment entity and not a sports news entity, we all know this.

Only reason I responded is because Millman does seem genuinely interested in making the Mag viable again and is openly begging people for feedback.

I don't know. It's true isn't it? Whether you like Boston or not they are having a pretty good sports run. I don't know why that would be any less of a story for a sports magazine than anything else.

Meh, I don't really have a problem with it. My only problem with ESPN the Mag is the complete and total lack of anything remotely interesting in it...ever.

And as stated before, if you want to sell ice go somewhere hot and not to North pole. There are more eyes in Boston than in most places. And when you write this about Boston you know NYC is reading and rioting.

It's business. And it's smart business.

It's the old issue from Howard Stern's 'Private Parts':

Researcher: The average radio listener listens for eighteen minutes. The average Howard Stern fan listens for - are you ready for this? - an hour and twenty minutes.
Pig Vomit: How can that be?
Researcher: Answer most commonly given? "I want to see what he'll say next."
Pig Vomit: Okay, fine. But what about the people who hate Stern?
Researcher: Good point. The average Stern hater listens for two and a half hours a day.
Pig Vomit: But... if they hate him, why do they listen?
Researcher: Most common answer? "I want to see what he'll say next."

I read the mag. Have subscribed for years. It beats SI IMO and while it's fluff it's good enough for the three minutes per week I have to actually leaf through it.

What's questionable about it?

Putting an issue together about the winningest city in the last 10 years is nothing. It's what a magazine should do.

The other stuff you mentioned brings journalistic ethics into play and does lots of damage to ESPN's brand. Well, that might be overstating it. I believe the Mike Leach and Longhorn Network things are simply the equal to the WWE admitting that they aren't actually a sport and are in the entertainment biz.

Millman answers things on Twitter too and also has taken suggestions for what people want to see in the issues of the mag. From his podcasts to his Tweets, the guy gets it.

He's one of the best out there right now in every facet of what he does.

Yeah, I've bitched about the mag to him a few times on Twitter (ME BITCHING?!?! NEVER) and each has gotten a national retweet with a direct question asking for feedback from everyone. He just took this to Facebook due to length of responses, IMO.

Yeah, that pesky 140 characters thing is a pain in the ass. I get it, small snippets is what the site is intended for, but then you get into deciphering weird abbreviations and typing like some high school douche texting some girl he doesn't have the balls to talk to. Gets irritating.

It's ESPN, not SEPN

Here's a hint - don't read it

Edited to add - don't get me wrong - I absolutely fucking hate ESPN. Their whole duping of the American public turns my stomach - it's like big tobacco advertising Joe Camel crack cocaine to grade schoolers. All the neighborhood kids just gobble that shit up, without being mature or astute enough to realize there is absolutely zero objectivity in 90% of what is produced by the WWL.

All that being said, it's a bit like really good porn - sports porn. You know you probably shouldn't watch, but you still do.

ESPN is a bunch of cunts and I won't hear any different, they're human trash and they can all die in a car fire. The end.

Just a car fire? Nothing about a bus full of AIDS or locusts or some other type of affliction? BTW, I would spare a few of of the chicks and have them work at the soon to be announced TCF network. Especially Dana Jacobson. She's your type, CDT.

Valid point; one which slipped my mind. I was thinking more about her drunken ass motherfucking Notre Dame and Touchdown Jesus.

Ohh yeah. At those two NFL blowing shithead's "roast". Nothing better than ESPN thinking it can do a roast and then getting upset when people "take it too far".

ESPN sucks, they're pretty much devoid of any talent whatsoever. The crappy TV shows, shitty rag, and their god awful audio abortions they call "radio shows".

The suck meter is pinned in the red.

^^^^^And they are so damn easy to ignore. Can't remember the last time I had on ESPN when it didn't have an actual sporting event on. Only go to the website if someone links something.

Better shit out there. And it's not hard to find.

I haven't read or watched anything in ESPN in years. With all the media outlets available, why bother with what annoys you.
