The best part is that when he finally returns (beginning of 2013?), he'll still have a suspension to serve. Nice.

Why don't they just add him to the roster now, let him serve his suspension, and then add him to the 60DL?

Might not sit well given it would be a complete shamockery.

I thought that the suspension was voided when he went on the DL. I'm pretty sure that's what Hoynsie put on twitter unless I read it wrong.

Suspension isn't voided, just put on hold. He'll have to serve it when he comes back.

Ah, well, when a Tommy John pitcher comes back, the return year is glorified rehab anyway.

2 yrs out, he may be an extra-studly pitcher.

We knew some of this impressive wave of young pitchers would get hurt.

Yep. Was kind of hoping that now it would be Pomz and White though :hide:

I read this AM that Pomeranz is going to be called up to the bigs and start before the end of the year. Talk about pushing the new guy...

More:

MLBastian Jordan Bastian
Soloff: Carrasco likely suffered "traumatic" elbow injury as a teenager. MRI now revealed damage consistent with old injury. Surgery needed.

Not giving MRIs during trades is normal. The only player in 5-player Ubaldo trade to undergo full physical exam (MRI included) was Ubaldo.

Carrasco's 1st MRI as a pro was this past April. RT @smyry: How did that not turn up in comprensive physical before the Lee deal?

Can't believe with TINSTAAPP, teams don't require a full physical/MRI on every trade involving a prominent pitching prospect. I can't hate on the Indians because it's not standard operating procedure, but for christ sake, it was an injury the kid suffered somewhere between 6-10 years ago.

Furthermore, if he had an MRI in April, why didn't they see it then, do TJS, and have him back by May of 2012?

Lotta advances in medicine, and they know more about arm injuries than years past, but fact of the matter is, there's a hell of a lot more they don't know than do. Especially in regard to diagnosis vs. treatment.

The diagnosis "tendinitis" in a pitching arm is code for "I'm not sure what the hell is going on...."

And while it seems mandatory MRI's are logical, I'm not sure they are a great predictor of many of the problems - and in cases where someone demands it, it's usually a result of them seeing something already wrong with the guy in the first place.

Personally, I think it's a crapshoot. ALL guys pitching mechanics are violent, and not all that healthy, let alone natural. As long as they're throwing it overhand. A ton of guys get hurt, especially weathering a major league workload - and some don't. But I don't think anyone's guess is better than the next guy as to which way it's going to go.

Not to mention you can't demand an exam as part of the deal. A guy, if asked, can agree, but most/many won't and HIPPA comes into play.

Interesting article from Joe Sheehan from 2003 that still applies today:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/artic ... cleid=2197

The irrational exuberance that develops over teenagers who can propel horsehide at high velocity is one of those inside-baseball things that, as an outsider, I just don't get and don't want to. The path from dominating teenagers in states with two-word names to being a successful major-league pitcher is long and difficult. One-hundred forty years into the baseball industry, how to navigate that path is still an open question, and while there's been progress, I see no one turning teenagers into rotation starters on a regular basis.

Then again, I'm dogmatic about TNSTAAPP. I pretty much believe that you can throw all pitchers into a bin until they're 21 years old or in Triple-A. (If a pitcher is at Triple-A at 20, that's a warning sign as well.) It's not a performance analysis thing, because even great numbers from teenagers aren't going to sway me. It's just a concession to what we know about physics and physiology, and how the two intersect at the corner of Jobe and Andrews.
