You need 4 starters in post season. I still have nightmares about going with that 3 man rotation in 1999 and pitching Colon and Nagy on 3 days rest with a 2-0 lead against BOSOX!!! (although I think the post where one of the series you can go with 3 is correct. I never want to see 3 days rest ever again.)

Well, statistically, pitchers (even great ones) who come back on short rest in the playoffs perform miserably. There have been a few exceptions in the recent 20 years, such as Beckett. For the Indians Hershiser and Jaret Wright did well on short rest. But for every Beckett or Wright, there are 20 Bartolo Colons (remember his memorable performance on short rest against Boston?).

As Pup said, the #1 seed will have the option. I can't imagine bringing any of our guys back on short rest.
If, in fact, we play Boston, the first two games would be in Boston...I would be assuming that Ubaldo and Masterson would pitch there. The next two would be in Cleveland, and Fausto could pitch there.

If the Indians make the post season, the only reason would be Carmona would surpass Tomlin as the number 3 starter! I'm not saying that to put down Tomlin or anything, but simply if they are in post season, Carmona will be the number 3 at worst. He will have to pitch that well for us to make post season I believe.

Carmona sucks in cold weather...will throw 90 pitches by the 6th inning and will have to become similar to his '07 form to even be considered ahead of Tomlin. Tomlin will throw strikes and keep his defense off the field as much as possible. Pretty much the exact opposite of Carmona. Even when Carmona is on his A game, he's going to throw more pitches than Tomlin. He has to. Now a game 4 down 2-1 or up 2-1, I think Carmona is probably our man unless we turnover and hand it back to Ubaldo or Bat.
IF this scenario occurs in October, you cannot put our winningest pitcher at the optional back end of the rotation ala a Ken Hill. He needs to have the ball in his hands when the series goes back to Cleveland. You'd feel more comfortable with Carmona than Tomlin there?

My point was is I think if we actually do make the post season it will be because Carmona really steps up and starts pitching great. If he pitches like pre DL Fausto I can't imagine we'll be in post season. It's simple really, it's the feeling that if both Fausto and Tomlin end the season with 4.30 ERAs (not likely) I know which one I'd want going first in post season. And his name isn't Josh. My stating what I'm statins is like me stating after the Browns go 13-3 who do I want them to face in the playoffs this year.

Im not neccessarily advocating going to a 3 man rotation. Just that in the division series if at all possible I would imagine Throwing Ubaldo and Masterson twice if needed give us the best chance over Carmona.

If they can figure out a way to skip Starter #4 in the postseason ( no matter who it is) without going on three days rest I think they will do it.

Hopefully Boston will get cocky and feel a 4 man rotation will suit them better in their series.

You gotta get there first. You can't set up a rotation to try yo win a series you arnt even in yet, and the best way to do that is if you can have in our case 2 best pitchers pitch twice except on 3 days rest in which case they need to be roided up first.


We have a better shot of winning a short series if Masterson and Ubaldo go twice.

The only higher seed that would pick that is the Yankees.
