Giants will get Orlando Cabrera from Indians, source says. #tradedeadline

Interesting.

Neal is 23, hitting .295 in AAA with just 2 HR and 25 RBI. Career .296/.372/.467/.839 slash line in the minors.

Right handed stick. Hard a monster 2009 in High-A with a 1.010 OPS in 129 games.

Seems like the potential's there to be a contributor.

Giants To Acquire Orlando Cabrera
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 30 at 9:51pm CST]

10:02pm: The Indians announced that they acquired outfielder Thomas Neal from the Giants for Cabrera.

9:51pm: The Giants will acquire Orlando Cabrera from the Indians, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com (on Twitter). With Mark DeRosa, Freddy Sanchez and Miguel Tejada on the disabled list, the defending World Champions needed infield depth.

Cabrera began the season as the Indians' everyday second baseman and has since transitioned into more of a utility role. The 36-year-old Colombia native has a .244/.277/.321 line in 344 plate appearances at second, third and short this year.

Meanwhile, the Indians will continue rely on rookie infielders Jason Kipnis and Lonnie Chisenhall, two of the top prospects the Indians did not send to Colorado in the deal that will send Ubaldo Jimenez to Cleveland.

I have hope. The front office seems to be pretty good at aqcuiring pretty good talent for crappy players over the years.

Yes. You're probably right that Donald comes up to be the middle IF UTIL guy. Gets some PT against LHP.

Letting the kids take the ball and run with it for the stretch run. I'm a fan of the strategy. Get them so experience, as frustrating as it might get.

Any chance they did a Broussard for Choo, Perez for Asdrubal, Blake for Santana, DeRosa for Perez type of deal?

The Giants, tired of playing a statue (Tejada) or an automatic out (Crawford) at short, acquire Orlando Cabrera, who is both

Neal, 23, has spent the 2011 season at Triple-A Fresno, where he has a .295/.351/.409 line. Baseball America ranked him 96th among all MLB prospects before the 2010 season and seventh among Giants prospects before the 2011 season. Neal, who played on a youth travel team with Mike Leake, Stephen Strasburg and the son of Giants manager Bruce Bochy, has an enviable combination of power and arm strength, according to Baseball America, which suggested he could become an everyday player. However, Neal has seen his power numbers decline this year (13 doubles, two homers, .409 slugging percentage).

thats a pretty good haul for Cabrera

I guess Uncle Cab wanted to keep his playoff streak going :hide:

Maybe he was a pain in the ass in the club house after he witnessed the Kipnis

I'm glad to see Donald back. At least now we might stand a fraction of a chance against LH'ers.

This leaves Phelps as the odd man out unless he can play super utility. I bet he's part of the package for Ludwick. Phelps and R. Perez maybe?

I like this move...it certainly frees up Kipnis to get everyday PT. How about that DP he started tonight...now that was sweet. Have to think knowing that he will now get everyday starts, I say Kipnis begins to blossom.

Good riddance, although I thought the Giants would trade Brian Wilson to us if we threw in Kearns.

Even if this kid turns out to be a 4th OF, the fact that someone gave us a worth-while player for such a washed up POS stuns me, almost as much as the Jimenez trade.

They're going to have to roster him in the off-season, I believe. This is his 6th year in the minors.
