Funniest comedian of all time?

Dude, the opening scene at the conference table was pretty much the funniest thing I have ever seen on television, short of great standup (and George Fucking Carlin and Rodney Dangerfield suck you old farts).

And then that episode just kept hitting you left and right.

Effing great comedy right there.

As was pointed out earlier, this is completely subjective. It's like ranking the best beer. That said...

Best delivery- Seinfeld (razor sharp)
Best one liners- Rodney (absolute classic)
Best trivial/observational humor- Jim Gaffigan (with Brian Regan and Kevin James(yep, he does standup) a close 2nd/3rd)
Best cultural and relationship humor- Rock (probably my favorite overall at gunpoint)
Best political/current events humor- Carlin
Best guilty pleasure- Blue Collar Comedy Tour (I know, I'm ashamed)

Random other ones that are pretty good: Kathleen Madigan, Lisa Lampanelli (small doses/roast humor), Giraldo(RIP), Louis CK (quickly rising star), Mitch Hedberg ("I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it"), Jay Mohr (especially with sports material)

I understand why people love Kinison but the screaming isn't my thing. Pryor and Eddie are obviously awesome too, they were just before my time and their shock/topical value dropped a little. The same goes for most of the other great ones from the 60's through the 80's.

Saw the cat everytime he came to town. The best was at Nautica when everytime he said something outrageously funny/raunchy all the boats on the river would blow their horns in approval...

Every year, he'd take his act one step further and push the envelope. He always said what everyone was always thinking...

Although I will admit as much as I liked Sam he wouldn't have lasted 20 years, he really excelled due to the times for which his material was best suited for.

For me his drunk driving bit is hilarious, the Jesus bit and Hodgie in the mudpit...why don't YOU feed him you're only 5 feet away asshole.

I can get down with this. Stand-up is a bit like music. There are different genres/styles.

Carolla and Rogan just discussed this on AC's podcast the other day. They were saying how some guys were just joke guys, and that they weren't that impressed with that except for the best like Hedberg and Wright. Ace and Rogan were more into idea guys like Carlin. Pretty interesting discussion as there are a lot of nuances to the profession. .

Adam is probably one of the unfunniest people on the planet. Makes Jim Carey seem cerebral. His delivery makes sandler seem dynamic.

Then again, since you are a huge fan of Varsity Blues Lights you probably have all the Crank Yankers' seasons on dvd. Oh, excuse, me, downloaded. DVD is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo VHS and you too hip.

I gave it a shot, knowing some of Maron's standup, and e0's rec. Very good. Comedians tend to be great interviewers, probably equal parts creativity and a lack of decorum.

I love Carolla. Listen to his podcast a lot. But, I think what he does is a little different than regular standup comics, so I'm not sure how to compare them.

I listened to WTF today to and from work. Mad eit through the entire Bobcat interview and part of the one with Klosterman, Hader, et al. It's a really fucking good podcast. I'll be downloading a shit ton of these and listening to them for the forseeable future. Very good call by e0y. Doubt I would have found it otherwise.

It's a totally different thing than Carolla's podcast. Carolla basically has guests so that he has someone to talk to. He dominates every interview by doing 90% of the talking. That's what it is. And it isn't trying to be anything else.

WTF is much better at hearing what the guests have to say. The Bobcat one was great BTW.

Catching up on Maron from the last two weeks and just was reminded in the Steve Byrne episode of how awesome his Dane Cook interview was. Make sure you hit the Steve Byrn one just to hear Cook go on about his essence and then Byrne's recollection later. Cook episode is old as hell so it's Premium (I paid the 9 bucks, worth it IMO) at this point but that was just great great comedy. Cook is such a freaking douche. Only guys Maron has made look dumber are Mencia in his famous expose when Maron did a two parter exposing him and Gallagher who got so pissed off he left the podcast. The Gallagher one isn't premium, FWIW.

Byrnes recollection of his interaction with Cook was just fantastic. Picturing Cook breathing deeply in the hills of LA and talking about his essence and energy and that type of shit is just too fucking bizarre not to be absolutely true. I don't doubt a single word of what Byrne had to say.

One of the first WTFs I listened to was Gallagher. I used to absolutely love that guy when I was a kid. I watched his specials over and over again. I had no idea that he turned out to be such a kook. I wa a little bummed about it to tell you the truth.

Listened to the first half of Shandling on the way to work today. There are a few points where I think Maron almost pisses himself from laughing so hard.

Carlin's "widow" episode was very touching. You think you've got a feel for the guy, then you find out what his legacy was as a husband/spouse. Blew me away. Let's not gloss over the Jonathan Winters ep. Maron showed his chops and respect in these two 'casts. Maybe time to jump back to the podcast thread to lay out Maron's place in podcast rankings... Carry on.
